    Hey Mav, Some friendly advice from a more than hobbyist wood worker. When it comes to staining and or painting. I usually turn to a wet sponge or wet towels and pre dampen the surface. It allows the surface to open up and take in more strain or paint. After a few coats have dried you can always sand or steel wool to smoothen out the surface.

  • @JuPac420

    @JuPac420

    This is great advice, my father taught me the sponge trick years ago and I still use it to this day.

  • @enjay8950

    @enjay8950

    So you lightly dampen the wood with water before oiling/staining/painting?

  • @zachadsitt3087

    @zachadsitt3087

    2 жыл бұрын

    Correct. You dampen it then allow it to dry before staining or painting. You'll feel the texture of the wood has changed due to "opening" up the pores of the wood. It's why when a piece of wood hasn't been properly sealed (like a kitchen table or coffee table) and someone places a drink that sweats without using a coaster, you get the raised ring where the cup sat. It is reopening the pores of the wood.

    Nice build, gave me some good ideas for a build I am thinking about. One suggestion, I didn't see anything for electricity if you are at a campground with power. Adding an outlet outside the truck cord going to the back makes for handy power. Nice for winter camping to use an electric heater or even powering small appliances without having to use your battery in back. If you pay for power at a campground you might as well use it.

    Love how it turned out and you got it done pretty quick even with the mid build change. I built out my own truck bed last October and it’s quite similar to your last setup. Right now I’m renovating a camper to take out to Montana this summer and it’s amazing how many little unknown issues you encounter along the way in projects like this. Also figuring out measurements and actually cutting the wood is always the most stressful part to me.

    I was wondering why you didn't engineer an in-fill for the double bed and then you revealed it! Very clever. Maybe some kind of foldable mattress could work as a seat & backrest during the day, and then flatten out to a double at night? Also looks like it might be more of a pain to cook outside with, but I guess that's a worthwhile trade off.

That way you’d be able to leave the stove in place while you’re cooking outside and free up some countertop (tailgate) space for food prep. You might have to line the drawer with stainless steel or something so it doesn’t become a fire hazard but think it would improve the feng-shui of your outdoor kitchen. Otherwise amazing results on the makeover, it’s super well thought out!

    Hey Mav, One of the things that i just seen was on your cutting board if anything is cut on the bucher block that may leak a juice it could fall into the storage below and damage stuff or the metal brackets and be a hard clean up job. If it is used as a cutting board at least.

    Quick fix would be a 1/4 or so deep groove with a round router bit. A lot of boards have this.

    The new build looks way more functional, can't wait to see it decked out and a camp n cook, one question? Why didn't you build a safe platform for the diesel heater you got, you already drilled a hole in the side of the truck for it or are you going another route for heating? just curious...

    My thought was since warmer weather is around the corner he might be biding time to get an understanding of how this build works for him, and how he might need to make adjustments before that gets installed anyway.

    @@brennanpryce2659 Very true about the warmer weather, it looks like it would be a pain in the tukkis to remake that workplace platform, it's pretty snug in there. I guess since that thing is a bit large you would need for it to be removed in the warmer months. I just don't want to see him burn his rig to the ground, he caught it just in time last go around.
