6:13 This is cooler than what they did on the main console version, it never made sense to fight them separately, having them in an endurance fight would've been unique

When my dad traveled to the US in 2003, he brought home with him a Gameboy Advance SP, with two games, one of them was Tekken Advance and the other was Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition, nowadays people might look at games like these as cheap and outdated, but a lot of them were probably born after these games were released, so they couldn't possibly understand how impressive these games were for their time, the funny thing is, I got Tournament Edition technically before I had Deadly Alliance and Deception on the PS2, so this was my first experience with 3D MK, to this day, I find Tournament Edition to be a very fun and nostalgic experience, I think it has aged relatively well for what it is.

  • @vahlok1426

Tekken Advance is stupidly impressive for the time. Its basically as close to a 1-to-1 port of Tekken 3 on strikingly inferior hardware as they could get, and limited to two face buttons and L & R. All that, and it still manages to not only look great for the system, but also feel like a legit Tekken game. A massive achievement for the team responsible IMO, for sure.

The beauty of the gba ports (from a gameplay point of view) is the juggle system; almost every character can launch the opponent with a simple jump kick or standing punch and then you can juggle with whatever you want. It's a lot of fun when you start experimenting with moves, specials and weapons, and the endurance mode is definitely a nice challenge too. Both games deserve more love tbh.

Something I found very cool about MKDA and MKTE for the GBA is that the games were MEANT to be played together via the Link cable. Both games feature their own Krypts, but some Koffins in MKDA require Ruby coins, which don't exist in the game, and MKTE let's you use both Ruby and Gold Koins, but you mostly only get the former ones. So in order to unlock everything in both games you actually need to wager koins of both colors using crossplay between them.

  • @RoyArkon

Fun fact: MK Unchained came on PSP after MK Armageddon was released on home consoles despite being an iteration of MK Deception, and with the exception of Jax, all the chars that were exclusive to MKU had their Arcade mode endings being fully canon and they explained events that happened between MKD and MKA. Oh and BTW there's one more MK handheld game, that's Ultimate MK which was a UMK3 port for the Nintendo DS.

  • @swiss6964

Fun fact: Tournament Edition isn't the only MK game to be missing Sub-Zero. The other one would be MK Trilogy on the Tiger Gamecom. That version is also missing Scorpion as well strangely. Another odd version of MK for you to look up if you're ever really, really bored. Great vid my friend.

when I was a kid, I picked up tournament edition used for real cheap thinking "MK on the GBA? I wonder which classic game they ported?" only to see that it was a deadly alliance port. I only knew it was deadly alliance because my cousin had it for ps2. I found it surprisingly enjoyable all the same. Of course as a kid I never broke the game in a competitive aspect, I would just look for a character's best combos or button and spam it.

There is also UMK3 on the Nintendo DS that has Puzzle Kombat as an addition, the main feature is the top screen as a sort of cheat sheet, having all of the special moves and finishers for the character you're playing. Although I don't know how different the game is from other versions, it just seems like UMK3 and Puzzle Kombat on the go

UMK3 has no difficulty select aside from the towers, if you count that. And puzzle kombat has you unlock characters the old fashioned way, since there's no Krypt. That's about all I can think of right now. Yes. AI Jade is still a fucking nightmare.

I've played them via emulators before, but it's nice to have actual copies. I bought my friends psp because she had unchained. I lived in a very very rural area with no car so I'm like, dude money talks. 😅 The models of unchained were so silly sometimes.

I thought the GBA games were technically impressive but not fun to actually play, but Unchained was something I actually preferred on the go. At home, I found 3D MK to be super jank next to VF and Tekken but on the go, to be playing a fully fledged Deception Plus on a handheld was an amazing feat. I know PSP relied too heavily on "home game but it's portable" but some of it was genuinely impressive to have around
