The thing is, the only part that's actually hard about this challenge is Mileena. All the boss characters are so slow me and a body found out very early on that just jumping them made them all a cakewalk. An angry AI with some of the normal characters like Mileena, Kano or Shang Tsung have always been much harder.

Yeah I remember that Boss Rage vid, it took them like 10 hours to finish it, yet they screwed up the Arcade mode by choosing Medium difficulty instead of hard, so the entire vid just for that alone was meaningless.

I like to think the gauntlet in the towers of time in MK11 is similar to the challenge tower in some ways! I definitely felt some nostalgia while playing it, but I’d definitely like to see it make a proper return in a future title

@@Yoshendi What about the Meteor towers? You also dont have full HP reset - just like half of your HP bar heal and you gotta beat progressively stronger enemies and debuffs are involved.

I'va actually completed this challenge as every character back in 2013-2014 and repeated at sometimes later just for fun. A few notes: 1) Your next opponent's meter will match yours (ex: you beat Goro while having 2 bars and Kintaro will have 2 bars) so it's often not a very good idea to have full 3 bars against Mileena as a Blocking Disabled debuff can result in you eating an X-ray that you can't block. 2) Kintaro's stomp can be countered with an NJP with every character for an easy combo. The timing is not hard at all. And as Stomp is Kintaro's only option to hit you at fullscreen, you can sit there and wait for it, just ducking the fireball. 3) Doing any metered special moves during the Reduced damage debuff usually isn't worth it unless it's enough to kill your opponent. Doing an X-ray during the Opponent healing debuff is a bad idea in general, as their healing still goes on during all the X-ray's slowdowns and will hardly deal any damage in total. 4) Permanent Blockind disabled against Shao Kahn is nothing. Permanent Reduced damage is however a problem as you'll deal only 1/4 of your normal damage in the fight. Also if you kill Mileena while any debuff is in the process of appearing, it can stay for the entire Shao Kahn fight. It's probably a glitch and it sucks, as in this case the Opponent healing and Opponent damage increase can stayt too. 5) Learning how to punish Mileena's tele-kick (both normal and EX) is essential. 6) Nightwolf, Kemshi and Smoke are among the easiest choices against Shao Kahn as you can reflect spears, absorb hammers or just use shake against both. 7) Reptile is a decent choice against Mileena as he can use elbow dash to run away from her telekicks if the Blocking disabled buff activates.

@@came3268 It was generally harder to do with characters I hardly ever play or am simply bad with. Freddy, Cyber Sub, Cyrax to name a few but I can't point out 1 character in particular to be the hardest. One thing I can remember to be very annoying are larger hitboxes on some characters while ducking which doesn't allow them to duck Shao Kahn's spear. It's definitely a thing with Stryker and if I remember correctly with either Rain or Kenshi (or both but Kenshi doesn't really care because he has reflect) A minor problem normally but if you can't block, it suddenly becomes a real problem, as you can't really play safe and probably are at low HP after Mileena. Stryker also has a strategy against Shao Kahn when he stays midscreen and can use his roll to lowprofile Shao's spear but with blocking disabled it's just too risky because of shoulder charge. I have no strategies for Rain but thankfully his damage is good. So Stryker or Rain with permanent blocking disabled against Shao would be the most annoying characters to play with.

Honestly, the only challenge in this for me when I roll Reptile is Mileena. Playing the ladder over and over because there's no local scene and my PC was trash made me very, very good at rushing down the boss Kombatants. I usually considered the ladder over by the time the semifinals rolled around.

also if you get close to them after a knockdown, they will always use a wake up. Getting the timing right on a simple crossover jump for a free combo works as well

I was only able to complete challenge with Kratos on the PS3 because he could parry anything. You can cancel your parry and do a combo right afterwards but with reduced damage

I've always thought MK9 had the easiest AI due to how vulnerable they are to cross up jumps.

I feel like MK9 has the easiest AI of all the games, their inability to deal with jumps is the big kicker and their constant wakeup attacks make it a lot simpler as well.

Making MK9 your primary PS Vita game while going to school makes you realize this really, really fast :)

I remember Ermac being in this challenge also for some reason. My 11 year old self really struggled with this, but i remember reading somewhere that it got 1% easier everytime you failed, so i kept trying until i got lucky

Which some people might say is babying the player, but remember you are going against goro and Shao back to back with debuffs, so it was very necessary on higher difficulties

If you lost several time in a row not only would debuff not happen on your character but you'd receive health in-between characters

Fun fact: Shao Khan can be MADE to infinitely "golf swing" his hammer. Just knock him down and rush him and he WILL ALMOST ALWAYS try to do the "Golf Swing" hammer as a wake up attack which you can dodge by jumping over him, doing a combo, knock down, rush him, dodge "Golf Swing", rinse repeat. Lol

This is one of the only channels that I can watch constantly, for me I never get bored watching them. Their video's keep me entertained for hours on end. Apart from the Arcade ladders, these long in depth videos are my favourite to watch. Thank you Ketchup and Mustard, I have a huge amount of respect for you guys.

MK9 was so special. I hope we get some kind of remaster with added kontent

So, remember the Prima strategy guide that the community deemed mostly useless? It actually helped me clear the tower within my first week or two of purchasing the game. Many of the tips from the tower challenges that pit you up against four Goros or four Shao Kahns are applicable to the three bosses here. Ermac could cheese the bosses reliably, in part because the tower A.I. struggled against his air burst attack following a blocked jump-in punch. Mileena, however, remains a challenge. As Ketchup points out, those debuffs make an already menacing all-rounder into a major hassle.

I didn't know how to do combos when I played this game as a kid...So I used Stryker and spammed the gun projectile over and over until I won the challenge.

Ive encountered something interesting with Cage back in the day when it came to fighting the A.I., its that if you do a cookie cutter combo ending with enhances nut punch and then do the back 2 unblockable (dont remember if you have to do a quick dash or not) but the A.I. will register it as a blockable and just sit there and try to block it. Free combos, it makes this a super easy challenge.

I think it’s interesting that we can program a computer that can beat any chess player but we can’t program a fighting game character to beat a human one on one without giving the ai ridiculous extra advantages. Of course the chess ai has ridiculous advantages in terms of brain power but it’s still playing with no advantages on the actual board like a Queen that could move twice or something.

I love how the final challenge is in some ways very simple, just beat all three bosses in a row but then they troll you by throwing flesh pit mileena into the mix

i remember doing this with scorpion. it made the challenge super easy with just square spam nonstop jump over them then square spam! that was all you need that 3 hit combo with square, because it was fast.

I remember beating it with kung Lau at the age of 10...after 17 trys

You handled the hardest stage of the tower just fine. That was sick bro!

Frame data knowledge + reasonable juggle execution and one could make it through relatively easy. The trophy for which you have to get a double flawless on Shang was more frustrating to me at the time, to be honest

Why do I think it’s so funny when characters duck below projectiles? It’s so corny, I love it.

This hands down best game ever in the series I had alot of fun of this as a teen now we need remastered with rollback add this to current systems and return this on pc

I remember playing this challenge all night, trying to beat it, & eventually did so this vid brought back memories!

I missed this game so much. Really excited it's backwards compatible now!

The boss rage of this challenge was so good

I'd rather do 10 of these 300 challenge towers than Kombat League for perks, skins and such...I miss the MK9 challenge tower and injustice missions. These were fun.

MK9 challenge tower was the best lol. Don’t think there will be another mode as interesting as this gem unless NRS really steps up their game (highly doubtful tho, but one can hope)

I love that they had the three boss characters and then were like… what should we do for the other character you have to fight? I know! Mileena wearing literally the bare minimum amount of “clothes” to not just be straight up nude.

I remembering beating this final challenge with Raiden back in the day. Once you learn the patterns it doesn't feel like such a daunting task. Still very proud of my achievement even though the "reward" was a letdown.

I like how most people don’t seem to like the reward even though it’s supposed to be fan service. I’m not sure what a better reward would be, but a naked skin for a character most people don’t even use just felt like the devs really didn’t care to think of a better reward lol.

I learned recently while going for the kung fu achievements that there's a pretty cheap strategy against shao kahn. If you get him in the corner every time he's knocked down and you get right next to him if you time the jump perfectly you can get a whiff punish on his hammer uppercut

I remember that i did this with Johnny merely because he is my favorite, wish i knew it was actually easy with him, me knowing nothing how truly play made me try this quite a few times

Great vid as always! I would argue that a lot of newer MK players have just as hard of a time on the arcade ladders of the originals. As a suggestion, I would love to see you tackle the how-to on Arcade Ladders on MKII and UMK3. With Kintaro, Motaro, and Shao Kahn strats!

The challenge tower is so much better than the time towers and multiverse towers It had little bits of lore and completely separate mini games

This makes it look so much easier than Maximilian Dood did. "Blocking disabled! BLOCKING DISABLED!"

Would have been cool that if you beat the tower, you got every boss character along with a secret motaro character.

I remember beating the challenge tower. For me I remember running striker and just using his pistol long range the whole time

See one of the main things in this video about the de-blocking didnt ever really bother me as I almost NEVER bother using the block, I always get straight stuck in and go for it, fair enough sometimes in times of trouble I do spam projectiles but blocking doesnt register it never has even from the very first mortal kombat game

A little thing that wasn’t mentioned - you can low profile Shao’s hammers with many pokes. I find it even easier than neutral jumping them (if your character can’t proper punish them)

I remember beating this challenge back in 2011 with Kenshi, after trying so many times with Quan Chi. Kenshi's sword combos had so much reach and good damage, so I spammed that and miracously beat Mileena after hours of trying. I had no idea that Shao Kahn was up next and I thought I was done for, I had just a tiny sliver of health left. I managed to beat Kahn in a flawless victory on my first attempt.

I remember trying this back then. Couldnt get past it and would always use smoke

I wish I had this video 5 years ago because beating this tower was the hardest thing I did, but I remember feeling so happy when I beat it with my favorite character kang.

I literally played for six hours straight and then ended up beating it with Nightwolf whom I never used. Just spammed lighting and tried to avoid Shao Kahn’s hammer throw. God it was so difficult.

You could use nightwolf's enhanced reflect(absorb) to deflect it safely and get some health back. Spears were able to be reflected normally. Plus his command grab worked on all 3 bosses. You could even enhance hatchet uppercut into enhance command grab to knock them to a safe enough distance to possibly spam lightning or arrows.

I remember doing this back in the day and I ended up using sheeva (which i barely used compared to other characters) after trying each fighter and deciding her jump stomp is the ultimate exploit for this challenge

Man a friend of mine couldnt beat this challenge. Several years after I had stopped playing MK9 and was deep into MKX. Asked me to give it a go. An added layer of difficulty to have to relearn everything whilst getting your head caved in. I beat this with Sonya then.

all the frustration and sadness ive experienced in this level and when i finally did beat it the reward i got was a naked mileena with toilet paper on her body...... Seriously? i wanted shao kahn

Thank god you didn't have to fight against Shang or Quan chi during this. I don't think i could've handled the teledrop with those debuffs lol

I remember this challenge has not being all hard on account that you can choose which character you use. Is no walk in the park but you can pick your main and go at it The hardest challenge for me was the one that you had to fight 3 shao kahn with striker. I can't remember how long i spent on that challenge but it was a roadblock

Dude I did the challenge with Donny Rage, his rex rage attack true combos into spear and his combo strings are nuts.

Hint: Use Shang Tsung and you may use Soul Steal (or the enhanced version thereof, Possession) to gain some health as much as you want. As for Mileena, the standard throw will have the same effect. Another hint, which is not character-specific, is to lose around six or seven times in a row. Yet, you shouldn't pause and ask for a rematch. Rather, let yourself be defeated until the option screen appears. Every time, the difficulty will decrease little by little.

man completing this felt AMAZING. Took me like 3 hours

Think I got through this one on my third try back in the day, I remember struggling way more with the one where you have to fight a bunch of Goro's with Ermac but I was trash with Ermac so not surprising.

Honestly, the challenge before this one was harder. Where you had to play as Sheeva and take out Goro without taking a hit. For this challenge, just play as Kratos and counter everyone's projectiles. Mileena was the only hard part, but Shao Kahn can be taken out with no trouble since Kratos is the only fighter who's counter can actually block Kahn's hammer.

I beat this challenge with Kratos spamming his parry.

I remember that like 11 year old me took this fight down with kratos and shao kahn fight was super fun with him

I did this back in the day. MK9 was great

Lol these were fun, I loved figuring out the cheese, I think I did it in two sittings

This was the first game that I ever got a Platinum Trophy on. I retired at rank #1 a couple of months after they reset the leaderboards. I miss this game.

I used to beat the ladder by myself on the hardest difficulty with scorpion and smoke, so one day I decided to play the challenge tower and it took me a bit but I did end up beating the whole thing I think there were like 300 challenges and I didn't skip a single one

Pretty sure I did this with Kratos arrow spam back in the day. It just worked so well against the AI. Not sure how it holds up now, but I definitely didn’t learn much from this challenge haha

Kung Lao(spin timing works for Mileena and story mode should have prepared you for the Shokan), Johnny Cage(keep a X ray ready for blocking debuff). Mileena herself was one of my mains. Raiden and Smoke were successful also.

yes, I'll definitely trust the person with I believe over a decade of high-level competitive experience to tell me how easy something is.

This was the most enjoyable Challenge in the game!

I remember this taking me like 80 tries. Shi was overwhelming at 14

I really miss the challenge tower as well as all the fun minigames like Test your Luck, Test your Might, racing, chess, etc. MK11 is very fun and a solid game, but its missing the bells and whistles of the other games. Hopefully MK12 has some challenges and other modes.

I legitimately beat this after a zillion tries BEFORE I learned there was a way to purchase and skip it.

As someone who loves Johnny, I am very happy.

If mileena was not in this challenge tower smoke would probably be the perfect character for this, his smoke away helped me with kintaro goro and shao kahn when I get the no blocking debuff, also is a good keep away move when you get too close, his unnlockable combos were good if you don't get a damage debuff and his shake really helped me with shao Kahn's spears and kintaros fire ball

I don't even own this game, but this was so interesting

I remember spending 2 to 3 hours to finish this last fight and yes. Mileena was definitely the toughest part. I learnt reading Goro, Kintaro and Shao Khan moves back then but Mileena was way too unpredictable. I beat it as Ermac, which is my absolute favorite MK9 character.

300 curb stomped me so badly but it was always because of Mileena. I could reliably smack Goro and Kintaro around with 0 damage but she would just destroy me. Once I finally beat her the second time though Shao Kahn was easy enough to fight. My girlfriend was laughing at me the whole time especially when I told her all you get from it is Mileena's bandage costume lol.

... Is that Keiya's Theme from EVIL ZONE playing in the bg during Shao Kahn's portion!?

Raiden and Liu Kang were the only ones I beat this with.

Sheeva's grab must catch airborne enemies (like it does in MK11 as well) which would be why it's a punish for ball roll. Is ball roll not quite as unsafe in MK9? Would everyone have to treat it like an anti-air combo or something? Anyway, nice breakdown, I tried some of the challenge tower, hated it and gave up. Never spent all that much time in MK9 either but I'd probably do better now that I have an understanding of how the game works. I knew nothing when I first tried it. I only bought the thing because it said "Mortal Kombat" anyway, since I'd never had any of the consoles during the 2000s I kind of lost track of the franchise and hadn't realised that it had continued right through.

This is actually pretty easy to cheese by spamming Stryker's gun.
