Port Forwarding | How to Access Your Computer From Anywhere!

Ғылым және технология

In this Budget Nerd video, we will talk about accessing your computer from the internet, or anywhere. There are several ways to go about this. We cover two of them, but we spend the most time on Port Forwarding. If you haven't seen my "Home Network 101" video yet, I suggest you start with it if you need to brush up.

    This is good, but what if you don't have a public IP? Most of the ISPs no longer provide public IP as it becoming scarce and uses CGNAT instead. Port forwarding do not work in this case. Do you have a workaround for this situation?

  • @bythegraceofadoni
    @bythegraceofadoni6 ай бұрын

    One thing a lot of these videos fail to mention, due to forgetting or changes with IPS, is that you need to have a static IP for portfowarding to work, and you need to do that through your IPS with an extra charge to your bill. I also THINK you need to have some ports opened through your router which the IPS also does but im not 100% sure on that 1

    First, great job at explaining- I feel like anyone could easily follow along with this tutorial, but please please do not port forward RDP. It won't be a fun time. There are bots set up that comb the internet looking for IP addresses that have port 3389 open then they are logged, and bad things will happen. Set up a simple OpenVPN server to achieve this in a much more secure way.

    @@user-nu4cs1pg7q Did your external IP change? Do you have a DynDNS or a fixed IP? This could be one of the reasons it would stop working. Unless maybe your router has been reset to factory defaults (doubt it, you would notice it when connecting to WiFi, unless you left the default ssid and password, which is highly unrecommended). There could be lots of other issues. On a side note, I've been using Wireguard on off-sites and it's way easier to setup and manage than openVPN, but you still have to go through the same hoops, like getting a fixed IP or a dyndns service, and port-forwarding your VPN port (IMO not that hard, but I'm obviously biased, because I work in the domain).

    Don't do this! Probably goes without saying. But beware of opening any ports to the internet. 3389 or RDP is the most commonly exploited port that will be used to gain lateral access to a network. Bruteforcing can be achieved under 10 minutes with weaker complexity. There are port scanners constantly moving across the internet, it will detect this. Doesn't matter if you change the port, the service still returns data. You will get an intrusion if you allow anything from the internet to 3398.

    i have 2 computers i want to acces, so i dont know what to do, i assume that i'l just need to put the other computer in other port, like 3388, but when i want to acces y dont know how to specify what port to use

    You could use a different port, but then you'd have to edit the registry to tell Windows what port to use. It's possible to use the PC you first remoted into, to them just remote into the other one.

    what is the difference between the internal and external port and do they have to be the same number?

  • @BudgetNerd

    @BudgetNerd

    It's in case you want to forward a port coming in externally to another port internally. But for the purposes of this video, you wouldn't do that, so they are the same.

    Can you have more than 1 RDP connections. Example 2 different users trying to RDP into 2 different computers (not the same computer). Maybe I am asking how can you port forward 2 incoming RDP connections to 2 different computers. Is this possible? Thank you for the great video.

    You can, but takes more configuring, including manually assigning different ports to different computers. Or you could remote into the one that is configured and then use that one to remote into the others.

    Ah then you'd setup a second port. But keep in mind the security concerns of opening up some ports on your network. It's not for everyone.

    If you give access to your virtual machine remotely to someone can they access your host pc? (teamviewer or whatever)?

    I corrected an error in my response above. That is what I'm talking about as well. They wouldn't have access to the host machine.
