Port Elizabeth (or just PE if you want to sound South African) is the country's fifth largest city. Best known for its attractive beaches, Port Elizabeth is located within the country’s Eastern Cape Province.
I got in here by ship and having already explored the central part of the city, which is quite close to the harbor, today I wanted to visit the Boardwalk and the adjoining sea front.
Boardwalk is an entertainment complex which houses a Hotel, a Casino, an amphitheater, a Conference Center, a Supersport Arena, and a selection of international restaurants, specialty shops, a Craft Workshop as well as Starz Cinema with five screens. All of this is definitely enough to keep you engaged and entertained for hours on end.
The complex is set around a series of man-made lakes and beautiful gardens. During the night, the lake also features a dancing fountain with light and sound show and the entire area is beautifully lit up! Next stop was going to be the sea front, it's directly opposite to the Boardwalk.
If you’re coming here to enjoy the beaches, one of the most popular is King’s Beach. This beach features shallow areas for swimming and snorkeling.
While the beautiful sandy beaches typically have quite a few people laying out for the day. The locals recommend taking extra care while swimming in Kings Beach, as it features an extremely strong current.
The Bayworld and The Donkin Reserve are just a short travel distance away from here! So, time permitting, you can also check that out!
I met some locals here who were out walking their dogs. I am fond of dogs, so, it was an instant connection. During our conversation, upon finding out that I was a non-local exploring Port Elizabeth all by myself, one of the locals called me "Brave".
Later, when I wanted to go back to the harbor, thanks to the taxi driver I found out exactly why.
Okay, so let me give you a background. Only special taxis are authorized to come inside the harbor and pick you up from within the port limits. Being special taxis, Obviously, they're much more expensive than usual ones.
To save this cost, I chose to come out of the harbor and since I didn't have any cellular network or internet to book an UBER, I just hailed a cab which was driving on the street. The seemingly friendly driver quoted 100 Rands for a round trip.
During pick up, he arrived well in time, I got in the cab and just before starting the car, he said "my friend! can you pay me now?" I said "Sure! here you go!" and handed him the 100 Rands
Now came the twist, he said "No, I want the full money". I told him, "this is the full money, we agreed for 100 round trip". He said, "100 was to bring your here, to go back is a 1000"
Anyways, when you're in PE, try to get an UBER and if for whatever reason you can't do that, then a book a cab via your hotel or hostel. Do not hail a cab from the street. When it comes to safety, it's better to pay a little bit extra than to end up in a situation like how I did!

Thanks for your nice msg :) it's totally fine, I understand that as a tourist I need to be extra careful. Also, such scammers are in every country and it doesn't have anything to do with South Africa as a nation 👍😊

That is honestly such a scary experience but your recommendations on taking an Uber/shuttle from a hotel/prebooked taxi from an actual company is important (not just for in Port Elizabeth but elsewhere in South Africa). That said, R100 return from the harbour to the Boardwalk is probably more expensive than an Uber would have been (if you had cell reception). This doesn't just extend to tourists but locals as well - I grew up in PE and went to university there (just before Uber was introduced). We often would get scammed, even from a prebooked taxi. One notable time was when a group of friends had booked and agreed the charge upfront at booking time. The driver asked us to pay more than double the quote after the journey had started and it essentially ended in us insisting he stop the taxi and we arranged another one. Thankfully it was a group of us so he couldn't have done worse as there are horror stories about individuals/couples being taken to ATMs in remote areas, told to withdraw as much as possible and then being left to find their way home.

Thanks a lot for the valuable insights! Besides PE, I was in Durban and Cape Town as well and what you say is absolutely true, taxis have to be hired with extreme caution. Also, it's a BIG RED FLAG if a stranger wants to accompany you while they bring you to an ATM to withdraw money, a friend of mine had a bad experience in Berlin (Germany). Once again, thanks a lot for your inputs and I hope more people become aware about these scams so that they don't fall for them and ruin their visit/vacation. Cheers!

@@flavioaccatini6407 I was a victim of that scam, it's really easy to fix. Firstly I couldn't connect to the Santiago airport Wifi to call an uber. Secondly, there are no shops open at night when we arrived, so couldn't connect to their wifi or buy a sim card. Thirdly the airport security are involved and lied about how much the tax driver was going to charge, which lulled us into a false sense of security.
