    Great video! 2 corrections, based on my experience during my tour of 3 different wineries in Douro yesterday: (1) There's a 4th type of Port - Rose. It was more recently given official status by the DOC as an official port, but from the producers I spoke to, they all think it's trash and has no business being called a Port, (2) at ~4:42 you said that producers decide whether a wine is vintage or not - according to my tour guides, the DOC decides whether a port can be called Vintage.

    Yeah, I decided to leave rosé Port out for now. Let’s see if it “sticks” in the long term haha. Good call with the vintage. My understanding is the producers decide whether to “submit” but the final approval is by the DOC as you said 👍

    I enjoy port, mostly Tawny ports. I haven't tried one labeled white port, but I've seen people saying that Tawny ports are a type of white port. This confuses me; I have always thought a tawny was a ruby port that has been aged longer in barrels, so I'm a little confused. I had a party recently and a guest brought me Graham's 30 year Tawny. It was very good.

  • @puroruso

    A Ruby is a Ruby and a Tawny is a Tawny. Rubies are younger with lots of berries on the palate, Tawnies are aged with caramel, nutty, raisins flavors. A Tawny cannot be a white port because white ports are made from Malvasia Fina, Viosinho, Gouveio (which are white wine grapes) and Rubies and Tawnies are made from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, etc. (which are red wine grapes).

    Sorry, but what do you mean standard Tawny is aged for 2 years? Tawnys are usually 7 years and up. Reserve is Ruby category, not a Tawny one.

  • @visforvino

    @visforvino

    There actually is both a "Tawny" and "Tawny Reserva" designation; it's just that most houses don't use both; they just pick one or the other. But technically, Tawny is about 3 years age while Tawny Reserva is around 7 years age. But many houses just have a "Tawny" OR "Tawny Reserva" that has around 7 years age, and then jump right to 10, 20, 30, etc. Here is a good example of a Tawny Reserva: www.wine.com/product/ferreira-porto-dona-antonia-reserva-tawny-port/420460

    @@visforvino Good example, but most of the producers that I've talked to (I live in Portugal) consider port a Tawny after 7 years of aging. 3 year old port cannot be a Tawny according to most. Reserve is considered a Ruby slightly more aged and of higher quality. And, of course, after regular Tawny come 10, 20, 30, 40 year old, which, by the way does not mean that they were aged for that long, but rather that different ports were mixed to achieve that particular number of years on average.
