Porsche Taycan In-Depth Review - The ULTIMATE Electric Sports Car ⚡️

What might the Porsche of full-electric performance cars be like? In this Taycan, we have our answer. It's more powerful and faster than any other EV yet made. As you might expect, it sets a fresh handling benchmark for what a performance EV can be. And its race-derived tech delivers an 800-volt power supply system that allows it to charge much quicker. Taycan pricing is exclusive of course. But if you're looking for the electrified state-of-the-art, you'll find it right here.
Background
Fully electric performance cars are all much the same right? They all give you a great big heavy battery, a couple of electric motors and enough pulling power to tear up the tarmac. Oh yes and they all feel terrible the first time you throw one into a corner. For a long time now, Porsche has been mulling over how to deliver something better.
Its first thoughts on the subject were delivered by the Mission E concept, a futuristic design study that did the motor show rounds back in 2015. It showcased class-leading recharging times, astonishing electrified charging tech and the world's most slippery EV model shape. And it was closer to sales reality than most realised, its production-ready counterpart, this model, the Taycan, launched in early 2020.
Driving Experience
There aren't many cars that can keep up with a Taycan, whatever drivetrain they might use. Most customers will choose one of the two top variants, the Turbo and the Turbo S. Both put out 625PS in standard form, extendable with an Overboost function to 680PS on the Turbo and 761PS on the Turbo S. The Turbo S generates a stupendous 1,050Nm of pulling power and if on this top derivative you activate Launch Control (standard across the range), you'll discover that 62mph can be reached in just 2.8s. Even the base rear driven Taycan offers 408PS (with the standard 79.2kWh 'Performance Battery') or 476PS (with the optional 93.4kWh 'Performance Battery Plus'). The AWD Taycan 4S offers 435PS (or 530PS on Overboost), puts out 640Nm of torque and deals with the 62mph sprint in 4 seconds flat. To ensure that the car really feels that quick, Porsche has engineered in a bit of motor whirr that you'll hear under heavy throttle and we'd pay extra for the optional Electric Sport Sound system that further amplifies it.
But the most difficult task the engineers had here was in disguising what as usual on an EV is a prodigious kerb weight - in this case around 2.3-tonnes. Plenty's been thrown at that problem here, starting with torque-vectoring four-wheel drive. On the two volume models, you're going to need to pay extra for a lot of the extra tools that together should make this car feel somehow more agile than a Panamera - things like Dynamic Chassis Control, electromechanical roll stabilisation and rear-wheel steering, all co-ordinated by a clever Porsche 4D Chassis Control set-up.
There are three available variants, the Taycan 4S (offering up to 530PS), the Turbo (offering up to 680PS) and the Turbo S (offering up to 761PS and good for 62mph from rest in just 2.8 en route to 161mph). Inevitably, the most difficult task the engineers had here was in disguising what as usual on an EV is a prodigious kerb weight - in this case around 2.3-tonnes.     This has to be the best Taycan review on KZread. I think I've seen them all, and this is on point all the way from start to finish. Well done! And I have to agree with what's being said as well. I also see this as the turning point for EVs with the very first drivers car. No Tesla has yet achieved that. I know for a fact, because I own one, and I've test driven all of them. When I drove the Taycan for the first time though it felt like no other EV I've ever driven. And it brought back the X-factor of driving I've been missing.

    I bought a Taycan 4S in January this year. This video helped me a lot to understand how to operate and enjoy my car. Best review I have found, but recommend to watch some other in-depths as well. What I dislike about Taycan is the touch screen. I think it steals focus while driving. Apart from that, it is truly a great car.

    I’m considering switching to an EV also and the Taycan would be my only choice - nothing else. Most likely the sensible one being the 4S. In your experience have you had any teething problems? I’ve long been driving BMWs (personally have found them very reliable) and this could potentially be my change in brand for over 10 years.

    @@MrRuv10 No, I have not had any specific problems other than getting used to a totally different car than what I am used to. Like BMW, Porsche offers a feeling of high quality and luxury. What annoys me the most (still do) is the screens and the touch pads, they steal focus while driving. I use Siri Porsche PCM system to give commands like telephone and navigation. It works 98% of the time. But you sometimes end up giving a message to the navigation and it misinterprets and you end up calling your ex-girlfriend (and too late to stop it). All in all, Solid good car, that fascinates me more and more. 9/10

    I was so impressed with the accuracy of nearly every detail of this rather lengthy review. I did want to point out a fairly major in accuracy though at 1:05:50 We’re just stated that you need the upgraded on board charger to exploit 800 V charging stations. That is completely false. You are fully able to exploit the 270kW charging with only the 50 kW on board Booster. The Booster is only needed when charging at 400 V stations that have more than 50 kW of Charging power available. That is not very common in the United States at least as most of those 400 V stations are also 50 kW. The electrify America 800 V stations are the most common single non-Tesla network Across the country and the car Makes for use of those stations. Minor correction at 1:11:45, The top speed and range mode can be adjusted up to 85 mph via. the PCM. Also note at 1:13:15, PRM Porsche recuperation management does not need the Recuperation setting to be Auto, it works on any setting. The auto setting simply allows the car to automatically break when you come up on another car but coast if there is nothing in front of you. I generally don’t even bother engaging this, I find that simply using the brake pedal provides a predictable behavior.

    The car is amazing, It’s my first Porsche but I owned a Bolt EV for over 2 years and test driven Tesla Model Ss several times. The Taycan convinced me, it inspires confidence like nothing else. I have a 4S with the Battery+, PDCC, PRV+, RWS, Matrix LED, Folding mirrors, Porsche InnoDrive, full leather two tone interior, and 20” wheels. I see 260mi range in temps around 60F and freeway speeds of 70+. I do use range mode often on freeways and normal mode on back roads. If you have the budget to entertain the vehicle, test drive one and try to find a twisty road. You will be convinced.

    Nice review. I am surprised that the Jaguar I pace was only mentioned in passing. I drive one that I purchased in 2019 (first edition), The design is distinctive, and I thoroughly am enjoying the fit/ finish, overall quality of this vehicle. I realise the past reservation that has come with Jaguar, but I have been very pleased.

    The taycan reviewers forget that porsche drivers don't drive 400km in a day. That would be very rare. In those cases we would take the G wagon. It takes me a week to drive 400 km in my porsche. So range is absolutely no issue at all. I just can't fault my Taycan so far. And it's the looks and the feel is the reason why i bought it. There is nothing like it in the EV market.

    Very nice job. I'm amazed at the depth of information. I did try to not order the sound option in the US and found it really was required. The night vision is excellent as is the passenger display. I have been getting about 280-290 miles with my 4S for your reference. Fortunately here in the US the VW agreement has provided many charging stations. The connect app is worthless. One can't even tell if you have a low tire before you begin on your trip so you can pump it up in your garage. The storage package, though too much money is essential.

    Excellent and exhaustive review but i feel you got it wrong on a few points when it comes to looking at mileage rating vs actual of these cars. Over the new revised 2021 model year I have owned one Model 3 long range and one RWD standard range. I now have over 10,000 miles experience split between these two cars, driving them in warm weather. I will say that neither car came close to its reported mileage range at 100% recharge. On my rear wheel drive standard range 2021 Model 3, I never get more than 220 miles on 100% recharge in sunny Florida. I saw the same degraded performance my long-range which I sold after three months and which frequently got below 300 miles driving the same routes time and time again at this speeds under the same loads I've also had an 2019 Audi E Tron wagon and it was usually in 200 mile range but more consistent than the Tesla models in it's return of consistent mileage, And anything because performance was as promised nothing more nothing less. I don't know if you own the cars that you review what using for a long enough period of time to get a real feel what daily Energy uses really are. But I did pay particular attention your comments that the Teslas seem to meet their energy use claims. That is just not true and I don't know anybody that would agree with you relative to these Tesla energy claims in general especially in cooler climates. I won't get into the myriad of other Tesla issues. From my perspective suffice it to say they have their place. When it comes to my current Standard range model three I can get a range of 220 miles or I can get 187 miles with the weather being consistent and putting no particular demands on the car drivetrain. I rarely if ever open the car up to aggressive driving, because I am lucky enough to have other cars to do that with As a last note, I will mention that I just received my Taycan 4S last week from a dealer in Pompano Beach Fl, 278 miles from my house in central florida. At 100% charge on delivery at the dealership, it said that I had 210 miles in the tank but in fact driving in standard mode I made it home with 25 miles left on the tank.I never had to turn to economy which by the way, would have given me even more! The dealership told me I would make it home without stopping and they were right. Very impressive indeed. Keep up the good work. I've enjoyed many of you're reviews

    @@OsvUkVehicleSupply i do not have the funds. I am more towards the end of life ... and am curious. About the future I may not get to see. The future I expected 50 years ago did not come to pass. Should, by chance, my fortunes change I would willingly go EV. I expect to be walking, more frequently, before much longer.

    What lets this car down, and many others (excepting maybe Tesla?) is that the car manufacturers rely on third party electrical charge station suppliers leading to problems such as differing plug points, charging time, having to download apps. to use the charger, if you find a charger ( especially a RAPID charger) suitable for your car. Look at Tesla who have their own charge points over a growing number of places, simply scan your bank card and charge your car. Unless other manufacturers follow suit then Tesla will be the less hastle car to have in regard to finding a RAPID charge point area for charging your battery. Maybe manufacturers can emulate Tesla in uniformity of charging stations for charging any brand of vehicle ( petrol cars have a uniform petrol entry port enabling fills at any station irrespective of station owner) but don't hold your breath. But time will tell -maybe things will improve over time. Maybe the Govt. could see an opportunity to get into the provision of sites ? Hmmm

    the only problem with electric car is they to quiet....its just that these cars has no soul compare to those cars with V8 engine....and when those gasoline engine roars...it cames alive...which is missing from ev cars....

    By March it will no longer be the fastest all-electric car. Tesla will regain that title. And so will the Lucid Air Dream Edition beat the Taycan, when it is released later this year.

    0 to 60 is irrelevant under 4 seconds. 100 to 150 is relevant only on the autobahn. More important is the driving feel, the damping and the overall quality.

    its a piece of junk that shouldn't cost a nano cent more than 30000 euro... Porsche dealers don't sell a single one, and they drop them to 3rd parties with 40% discount... so the few idiots that purchased on.... and they are literally a handful, bought any version of taycan with a 30% discount.... And they are getting two fingers in the eyes when they are wanting to trade it in for another car, INCLUDING PORSCHE the same dealer.
