Porsche Cayman 981 vs 718 | Does the 981 keep its value better? | Depreciation & buying guide

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this buying and depreciation guide of the Porsche Cayman 981, I’m showing you the depreciation per year and per 1000 miles driven. Furthermore, I show how the depreciation numbers compare to other cars such as the Porsche Cayman 987 and 718. Buying your first Cayman? This is the video to watch.
You can contact me on fourwheeltrader@gmail.com if you would like a personalized analysis.
Cayman 718 Depreciation Guide: • Porsche Cayman 718 Buy...
Cayman 987 Depreciation Guide: • Porsche Cayman 987 Dep...
The video is structured in a top-down way. That means that we first have a look at the market as a whole and some general price levels for the Cayman 981 market. After this, we will dive into the details.
Specifically, this means that the video for the Cayman is split a few parts. In the first part, we will explore the market and have a look at the average price points. In the second part, we will figure out the depreciation per year and the depreciation per 1000 miles driven. We continue then by inserting the depreciation curve of the 981 to the Cayman market. From this, it becomes it becomes clear that there are quite some differences in depreciation between the Cayman generation, especially for the GTS models. In the last step, I rank the 981 on the depreciation leader board. This shows us that the residuals on the GTS are quite strong and that the S version is doing very well in terms of depreciation per 1000 miles driven.
Note that all the prices are advertised prices.

    Great video, I bought a 981 GTS with a manual gearbox 2 weeks before the gts 4.0 was announced. Iam from Belgium and the new GTS is 10k more expensive as the 981 used to be and the taxes in Belgium are also 10k more expensive on the new 4.0 gts in Belgium. Not a lot of 4.0 GTS will be sold as I think that the few people who want to pay the extra tax also want to pay 5k more and get the GT4. BTW where the 981 GT4 was almost impossible to get, the 718 GT4 is almost impossible to sell for the Porsche dealerships, one of the biggest Porsche dealerships in Belgium (Porsche Centre Knokke) has 3 GT4's in stock. So I think it is really hard to predict what the price is going to do, but honestly if I knew what I know now I would probably have waited for 1 more year before buying my first Porsche as I think that we are heading towards an economical recession and that will affect the prices of all cars...

    The options are also a big factor in depreciation. I wasn’t willing to buy an 981 S without PASM or X73, PSE, SC, PTV and Manual trans. It was hard to find, and had to pay a bit more, but was worth it.

  • @fourwheeltrader

    I found that options are a big factor in the first 2-3 years. After that, the premium fades away really fast and, compared to model year and mileage, they have no predictive power for the price of the car. That ofcourse doesn't mean that a full spec car has the same price as a low spec car. The difference however decreases rapidly when the car ages.

    Bought a used 2018 718 s for 55k US in late 2020, I am starting to see prices well above 60k for similar miles/options... The GT4 would be a better investment but I love this car and it seems to be holding or even going up at this point. Perhaps the Gt4 exclusivity and price are driving others towards the 718/981s? It did for me, once I saw the cost/performance of the 718 S, GTS and added comfort I was excited to go that direction, still not sure I'd love the GT4 but it would likely go up.

    Well fast forward to 2024 and the depreciation crystal ball is a bit foggy. Here in Canada a base 2017+ Caymans are going for an average of 70k plus tax. 2018 CGTS are high 90’s + tax. The flat 6 gts used is over 100k + tax. I don’t see that much in depreciation with these cars and especially now that Caymans are going electric. I picked up a used Porsche CPO 18’ CGTS for 120k cad tax in plus extra warranties added. Car had 23k kilometres on it.

    Hmmmm are you saying the base model and s model 981 cars are just following base line long term cayman depreciation curve and only the gts 981 will be effected by the new 4.0 litre 718. I think all 918s will drop when this new 4.0 litre comes out.

  • @fourwheeltrader

    @fourwheeltrader

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, i think that the s and base will follow the long term path depreciation line and end up im the area of the 987. They might not end up even end up slightly higher. The reason that i think this is that the premium for the base and s compared to the full market depreciation curve is small. Also, the new 4.0 gts is priced way above the current base and s models, so in my mind it doesn't directly affect the demand for the s and base. All of this is ofcourse speculation :)

    So I need to add the cost of depreciation per year to the depreciation per 1000 miles per year - so for a base model $4902 + $3110 for 10,000 miles driven = $8012 per year? The thing is when I look at prices compared to how they were a year or even a few years ago they have barely changed at all in the UK market. They are more expensive if anything.

  • @fourwheeltrader

    @fourwheeltrader

    3 жыл бұрын

    When you add the depreciation per year to the depreciation per 1000 miles you overestimate the value change due to the correlation between mileage and model year. Also, used car prices increased a lot this year due to an increase in demand and decrease in supply; i have some videos on this. People who have $$$ coming out their ears, seemingly like yourself, don't have to worry about it. It looks like this was a chance for you to flex your muscles. Good for you! The smart people can have some fun, and maybe even MAKE some money! Fourwheel Trader took the time to make this video to help us all with the intent to educate us.
