I did not buy mine for fuel savings per-se, I did get it for it's incredible range and flexibility. Having a real world 760 mile highway range is worth a lot just in itself. Jacksonville Fl to Montgomery AL and back on a single tank! The standard gas engine requires premium fuel which at this time is higher in price than diesel, so there is cost savings especially when you consider 34 mpg on the highway at 75 mph average speed. The range gives it such an advantage that you do not have to worry to much whether you will find a station along your route in time before you run low. You can pick and choose and look for best station at the best price. I have driven the gas model (non -S ) and found the driving impression for engine performance to be comparable. Maybe you can argue a 1/2 second here or there but you won't feel it in this in fact the torque range feels so broad it is more fun to drive than the base gas model. Porsche does have a 5k mile service interval for this engine, which I found odd since the VW Toureg has a 10k mile interval. I got no good answer for what that is except maybe Porsche big extra cautious being new to the TD and that they do in fact have their own engine management system for this engine, but I am not sure why that would increase the service interval. overall I am more than pleased with this purchase. The Platinum Edition bundles in my opinion the best mix of options - the most desirable ones to me anyway - at a reasonable cost and I didn't think the Porsche up charge for this vehicle was out of line for Porsche experience which is alive and well in this car. I have description such as "physics defying handling" used to describe the Cayenne and after 3 months of living with it I concur with that assessment.

Get that thing tuned and watch your mpg rise to 40+ with prolly 450+ torque and ~280hp. Plus, that diesel motor will run for 500k miles!

I’m looking at the used market for a 2013-14 diesel Cayenne. Is this diesel motor reliable? What I mean is a Ford F-250 or Chevy can go 200,000miles before any real reliability concerns with their diesel motors. Is a small VW v6 diesel similar in diesel bulletproof form? Or am I better off getting a sub 50k mi gas V6?

One time I got 850 miles on single tank of diesel...What i dislike is oil change at every 5000 miles . Cayenne in other countries have oil change at 10000 miles .

i wouldn't go that far cuz dont forget any engine will burn a certain amount of oil between oil changes so you stuill need to check and add oil every 3000 miles or so even on a new car.

You don't put a diesel engine in a well renowned performance vehicle. If you can afford to buy a Porsche then you can jolly well afford to fill it up with petrol. Not only is the diesel version more expensive than the petrol, but diesels require more frequent servicing and the injection components are vastly expensive. I'm not a big lover of diesels to be fair.

I think most people would agree with you that the Petrol version with high horsepower is more indicative of the brand. However, with rising fuel prices in North America, more and more people are looking for alternatives to a high fuel bill. I also agree with you that modern diesel emission systems are pricey to maintain and repair. While my TDI Jetta was about 8k more than the gas version, I see savings everytime I fuel up. 600 miles is not uncommon and I've seen closer to 700 a couple of times. The gas version would be lucky to sniff 400.
