Porsche Cayenne (958): Fixing a Leaking Sunroof

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we take a break from the usual BMW i3's and Teslas, because Arthur will show you how he fixed a leak in the roof of his Porsche Cayenne S e-Hybrid (958 facelift) before it went up for sale.
It involves clearing the drains which collect water from around the sunroof area and take it down the sides of the tailgate to just above the tailpipes where they exit onto the road.

Had done this on our ‘18 Macan but this video helped so I could see where the nipples were. I just cut the ends off so debris wouldn’t get stuck. Supposedly pinched at the end to prevent bugs from getting up into them. I just cut a V into them. Both rear ones had debris and the drivers side had water. That is the side we had water coming in the back from. And yes, our ‘18 GTS has the same “dents” in the exhaust. Thanks!

Perfect! Easily reached the drain exit with the car just parked as normal as I knew where to look/feel. Thank you so much for posting this video.

Thank you so much!! I've been trying to find the source of my leaking sunroof on my 2015 Touareg, which I believe is built on the same chassis as the Porsche Cayenne 958. I hunted for ages under the car, almost about to remove the rear inner arch cover, until I found this video! I simply inserted a piece of curtain wire, all the way up to the sunroof from the drain hole shown in this video. Removed loads of gunk on exit. Tested all OK!

While I do not own your vehicle, I do own a 2016 Toyota Rav4 with a sun/moon roof and will be checking for similar drain tube bockage. Thanks for the heads up. Always better to try and stay ahead of this stuff when we can. Cheers.

I've seen another guy just slice the end of the drain nipple that is under the car so the water and dirt can flow out of it much easier. He then runs some cleaner down the pipe from the sunroof and blows it out with some shop air. Hope this helps anybody with the same issue!

Great video! Just a note for those like myself chasing down water leaks from the rear of your Cayenne. The pipes can also leak from the sunroof area near the junction box, spilling water onto the electronic modules such as the PDM on the right rear of the vehicle via the roof lining. In my case the drain pipe itself appears to be clear, so it requires the full removal of the headlining to gain enough access to inspect the connection between the drain pipe and the junction box

  • @AlphonsoTimmins

Update for anyone going through a similar process - you are able to drop the rear of the headlining just enough to take the pipe off and clear the blockage with a small screwdriver/stick. If the junction box itself is blocked, it will overflow elsewhere before the water makes its way to the drain pipe, so no need to remove the rest of the headlining! (unless you want to inspect the front drains)

On a related subject, a common water intrusion issue for 958s is a blocked AC drain filling the passenger footwell with water.Rather than disemboweling the area under the glove box and fighting the PIA retaining clamp, here is an easy fix: With engine cold, from the engine bay, run your arm along the firewall and you can feel for the rubber AC drain outflow to clear it out. As a permanent fix, I then ran a silicone tube (10mm OD with 3mm thick walls) retrograde up the tube, then cut it an inch longer than the drain to serve as a permanent opening, yet preventing an entry point for field mice to the cabin.

Found my rear carpet wet and also under hybrid battery. Disastrous consequences. Now having to have battery rear built. Has insulation fault in minus ans positive harness. Also 6 other messages with chassis fault, handbrake and steering plus more. I think rear seats removal and carpet out after battery repair. Find where else the water have found it's way in. Am almost frightened to check the drains work now on sunroof. The front ones are clear as are the rear. Hope the bill stops at battery 🤞🤞 thank you for excellent video

Thanks for the vid. I had exactly the same symptoms - I cut the rear outlets (behind the bumper) 1/4 inch shorter to get rid of the pinched end - one drain was full of water up to the sunroof. Solved. Looking around the internet, this seems to be a common problem with these Porsches. Germany has a reasonable rainfall so it can't be news to Porsche. Wonder why they persist with this design?

Also check the cowl drains that can be accessed behind the front wheel wells. Leaves can block the drains and cause flooding in the front foot wells. Water there can corrode wiring harness splices causing many weird electrical problems.

Do the front wheels or the inner wheel liners have to be removed to access these drains?

  • @robvanname6867

    @robvanname6867

    Жыл бұрын

@@jaybimmer900 it is easier to remove the wheels but just remove a few screws from the back end of the wheel liner and pull the liner forward. That exposes the cowl drain. They have a rubber flap valve in each drain ( one on each side ). I actually removed these since I’m not fording any streams.

Try to clean them out from time to time and avoid parking under trees wherever possible. Very easy to mistake it for a leaking windscreen if the front drainage is blocked 👍🏾

Which part of this video is about fixing the leaking sunroof?

  • @AndreiCristt

Finally got my Cayenne 2012 and I feel so in love with it. It's in perfect condition with full sunroof like yours but it has one problem and it stresses me out. The BOSE system is making some strange noise something like a lost radio signal especially in the rear right. I was afraid not to start a fire from the wire and today it was a rainy day, so I figured out that in the rear right, in the trunk, exactly in the are that you showed in the video, I have leaking water and the BOSE system doesn't work properly everytime and it has strange noises. What should I do ? Should I open all of that trunk like you do because of the BOSE system to see whats going on ? Or just find to clean those pipes like you showed in the video ? Please reply my mess ! Thank you so much in advance🙏🏼. I appreciate your video a lot ! Do you think that my subwoofers will be ok ?

  • @djessbolan

It seems like this is a common issue, but which can cause huge problems - in my case dealership had to replace subwoofer (because it got soaked, and died on me - so if you don’t have any sound coming from PCM - might be the reason why), and biggest one, they had to replace the computer. I had issues for months with headlights and taillights, flickering/not working, and codes. They replaced the headlight housing, headlight itself, basically spend bunch of money trying to replace everything from headlights to taillights, when it ended up being water damage from sunroof drain plugs. After they replaced everything, they cut the opening of drain plug to be wider so that tree deposits doesn’t get stuck in there and block water again. From beginning of the issues, they spent over $10grand in damages, when it should’ve been noted somewhere that this is a common issue and should be fixed as preventive maintenance. Luckily vehicle is under cpo warranty. And only reason why they found it was me finding big amounts of water coming under my exhaust parked uphill, on a sunny day.

Exactely. Why didn’t it just stay in top groove part of sunroof ,,,when you too it off was it connected to the roof part black nipple connector ok? Does it mean if it clogs again it will leak inside the car again?

When clogged up by debris at the exit the drain pipe fills with water completely and the water then backs up the drain channels around the sunroof and it overflows into the headliner
