Porsche Carrera GT history and on-road review. Best sounding Porsche ever?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Porsche Carrera GT was first shown in concept form in September 2000 and I was there. This video gives you an insight of that amazing reveal and then what's it like to drive on road and how it compares to its rivals, including the McLaren F1.

Alternatively you could tune in to "me, me, me, and a bit more me" aka Jay Emm and get bored into submission while getting nothing better than a view of Mr Emms face as he waffles on about how crap McLaren's customer service is......well that's how I see it anyway.....

The year was 2007 and I was twenty years old. I was working for a local Porsche-Audi dealer as a shuttle driver when a customer brought in one of these Carrera GTs for some work. I count myself lucky to have been there when he returned to pick it up. He crawled out of the lot and onto the street that ran out front of the dealer and then made his way to the stop sign with the major highway. Just as I gave up on hearing anything from it, this primordial scream came forth as he floored it away from the stop sign and it was as if the checkered flag had just dropped on a one-car F1 race. He ran it straight to redline and even though he was well away from the building, the volume never seemed to diminish. I'd never heard anything like it and even now, 13 years later I can still hear it in my head and it never fails to make the hairs on my neck stand up. What a car!!!!

This video is a perfect example of why Harry is so unique - despite the eye watering price and exclusivity of some of his subject cars, he has a wonderful way of summarizing the attributes (positive and negative) of his subject matter in a matter of fact, layman's everyday explanation that perfectly gives you a first hand impression of the car's qualities. This Carrera GT and the F-40 both give you a wild race car ride.. The noise, the acceleration, and the handling are just like a true track car. You have to drive them all.. including a McLaren F1 or P1

Watching this and listening to Harry’s enjoyment actually had me blubbing with tears in my eyes. I remember driving through the Blackwall tunnel in my R53 Mini Cooper S when I heard what I thought was a UFO coming up behind me in what can only be described as the ultimate tunnel run. The high pitched noise didn’t even sound like a car. All I could do was move over and let them pass. Wow. I thought it was a UFO but of course it was the Carrera GT. 😢

Shows how subjective car design is - I think this is from an engineering perspective, one of the most outstanding designs of the 20th century - but for me the looks do nothing at all, I find it rather boring & pedestrian to look at, at least from a supercar perspective.

As a Boxster owner, it's really neat to see the similarities between the Carrera GT and the Boxster. The door jambs look the same, the front hood looks the same (though probably carbon) and of course the instrument cluster and steering wheel look to be the same unit (also shared with 996). It's remarkable how well finished this car is compared to something like a Lamborghini of the same vintage - the details are bordering on apple consumer product - level attention.

What a fantastic video. Your own enthusiasm for the car comes across not in the stats but your own non-verbals. And it’s a really nice insight to hear that the clutch isn’t as tricky as so many on social media urban legends would have the car world believe. Of course it’s expensive to service but as you say - so are all cars in this bracket. Keep up the great videos Harry and hope to catch you out and about testing one day! 👍
