PORSCHE 997 TURBO MAJOR SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE PART 2; Pinning the coolant pipes

Part 2 outlines adhering the coolant sleeves to the housings, as well as why this method of repair is my preferred choice. The procedure for drilling, tapping and installing the button head cap screws to "pin" them in place is shown as well as after photos. #PORSCHE #911Turbo #997Turbo #MEZGER #FLAT6

Would corrosion be an issue further down the track? I would have thought that having dissimilar metals (aluminium and the stainless steel bolt) in a wet environment might be a cause for concern.

Thanks for sharing this video. I never really understood the term “pinning” but I guess the bolt at the end is what this is referring to. JB weld is pretty strong stuff. Do you know if people have done this method but without the m5 bolt?

I don’t know of anyone just re-adhering the coolant sleeves and not installing the pin. The purpose of the pin is to locate and lock the sleeve in place so it cannot eject from the housing. I suppose that doing just the JB weld would work, but most tracks will not allow a 911 of this generation/engine to run without documentation of the cooling pipes fixed/pinned/welded.

Maybe I missed something, but why did you add the M5 bolts? No problems with leaking through these tapped holes? And are the screws not sticking into the flow of the pipe?

1: So the coolant sleeves do not eject. 2: Pressure testing prior to installation and more than 6,000 miles traveled in the car since the work has been done prove that there are no problems with leaks whatsoever. 3: Yes, the screws are inserted all the way through the coolant sleeve to hold it in place, and it is indeed interrupting the "flow" of the pipe by a very nominal amount. This is a tried and true method that has been practiced for many years.

How many hours does this job require? How much in parts? Lookin at getting 997 turbo soon. Thanks.

I am assuming that an 11 12 13 year old 911 turbo will have this issue inevitably regardless of miles? Rubber just degrades unlike the metal replacements you used.

I wonder if the engine can be tuned easily to match the 50 more horses in the updated 2011 turbo s model? I just test drove an 07 turbo last Thursday and was blown away by the power. I have an e550 merc sedan I've had for 8 years and thought that was fast. 2011 turbo s are being way over priced by sellers right now. Thanks for entertaining my questions. Lemme know when you had enough. Haha
