Porsche 996 vs 986: What goes into a pre-purchase inspection of a 996-gen 911 and 986-gen Boxster
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The 996-generation 911 and 986-gen Boxster are undoubtedly great entry level Porsches, and your dream of owning one may be closer than you think. Twenty-grand can purchase a nice 996, while 986s often go for less than $10,000, and there are steps you can take to avoid purchasing one in disrepair. Find out how to tell the good cars from the bad with our video pre-purchase inspection guide.
The video is half an hour and fully covers what goes into a detailed pre-purchase inspection. It is split up into three parts for easy digestion. Click on a link below to start watching from that point (or click above to start from the beginning):
3:06 Removing the oil pan: Good engine versus bad engine
11:02 Examining the exterior of the whole car
27:11 Connecting a diagnostic tool to an 996 to measure timing and camshaft position and more

Wow, I've watched a lot of videos on this topic, but this is by far the best. Would be cool to see more parts
Excellent video. Most Indy shops I've used to do PPI don't even go through half of this but they charge $$$ for inspection. The computer analysis shown here is excellent. I've never received a report from even the best Indy shops that have done PPI for me. The graph should at least show if the car's running good. This is the reason buying a pre 2009 P car is scary. I know the IMS and RMB failure are low per Porsche stats but I speak for some Porsche enthusiast we don't have extra 25k for replacement engine. Thanks for making this video.
Great video filled with great insights. Thank you!
Very Helpful, I'm in the search now for a 996 and am trying to be as prepared as possible for it.
#1. I'm surprised that you never mention to join the PCA FIRST, and get to know the cars, and maybe you can buy one from one of the other members. It will likely be very well maintained. 2nd I have had PPIs done and usually the advice is "Dont buy this car" You can find one that's in better shape (see #1)" 3. I would NEVER let some yahoo take the cover off of my car's anything, or take out the spark plugs - because believe it or not, not everyone is as honest as you guys. Thanks for the video!
Good informative video as always. I have done numerous engine teardowns and modifications on the two 986s that I have owned. (documented on my channel). I even had the confidence to do my own PPI for my current 2004 Boxster S! Thanks for the video!
This is an amazingly detailed video and a great service to prospective buyers. However, recommending an "all day" PPI on a 20-25k vehicle is wildly unrealistic. Maybe if this was a 50k+ plus car but even then the typical buyer will be hard pressed to find a mechanic that is even willing to do this, let alone have the expertise. Buy you know, that's just like, my opinion man.
In the UK, check the brake pipes, especially behind the plastic cover under the left side of the car. It is very common to see these corroded. Take care when you remove the calipers the large socket head securing bolts protrude through the bracket and several exposed threads corrode causing damage as they unscrew. Clean and lub the protruding part first. Manifold studs/ nuts on the heads corrode to almost nothing, not much you can do without major work and they can last for ages in that condition, but be aware. For all of that, 996 is a fantastic car, drive one and you are hooked.

Good advice! I have a 996 from Florida, so dirty side looks ok concerning rust, but a very little bit of Florida sun damage to dash.
hello, i'm a french viewer. This inspection makes me happy, thank U. Comments : about "oil" .. not so easy to tell the guy "hey, i want you to show me the oil ...." .
The filming on the second presenter is far superior to your normal techniques. Being able to see close ups of what he was talking about was very helpful in understanding what is being explained.
Thank you for an excellent informative video! There is so much info that I can't take note fast enough.
Awesome video. Thank you!
4:06- "Make sure the previous owner didn't change the water pump trying to hide something. But you should change the water pump as soon as you buy the car"....HUH... What is he even trying to say?
Very interesting and very informative thanks, the only thing was I was quite surprised there was no mention regarding the oil filter removal and checking the element and canister. I realise you removed the sump plate which was very important but there could have been debris stored in the oil filter element.
Yes, please do one for 997 with the C2S engine.
Excellent detailed video!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
Great video!
Can you video a 997 and a 991 pre-purchase inspection ?
Great video. Quick question. Does Carchex do a thorough pre-purchase inspection like this? I was looking to getting a 996 and they quoted me approx $250.
I bought my '99 996 from Jake Raby.. Love this car!!
Is there an affordable scan tool which measures camshaft deviation? And by affordable I mean less than $300. Thanks for the nice video but I wish you had shown something about the resealing of the sump.
you spent a bunch of money changing oil and the oil plate gasket, but I saw no real inspection to see anything going on that required spending a couple hundred dollars to change the gasket . I saw no inspection of the oil filter removed either. what did all the damage to the fasteners ?? also if porsche engines are well made why would so many 20 year old or less engines be replaced ?? The crank angle and over rev stuff was excellent info. do you get a list of repairs suggested ?? after an inspection ?? or a value you think the car has ??
At 18:30 or so. The presenter whispers the price of new headlights for this used POrSche.
Ask the seller before you have a mechanic take off the oil pan.
first thing i'd check be ims bearing then clutch then oil leaks

How would you check the IMS bearing? Is there a quick and easy way to check its condition?

searaydrivingguy replaced all those on my Porsche Boxter s when I bought right away and have been happy with it for the last 3 years
Awesome!
Surly their not gonna drain the oil in ppi are they
the radiator can also corrode if the debris is not removed !
Ugh I just paid for a pre-purchase inspection on a Porsche boxster 981 and they did not lift the car up to check under it. Definitely didn't drain any oil. Supposedly, they checked the belts and such, but none of the pictures I received even showed the engine.
Since we are so concerned about metal debris. Why wouldn’t we have the oil pan base ,one large magnet to collect it.
No compression test?
I really like the 997, BUT, a 996 Turbo goes for about the same as 997.2 So the 996 Turbo is a very attractive prospect in my humble opinion. What do you guys think?
I thought it was over for the guy at 1:09 XP
Why was the cabin air filter just exposed to the elements? Was the cover already removed before filming?

Who's the guy on the phone at 22:39? lol
What's with the music ?? Trying to year what you all have to say
I appreciate the informative and educational nature of this well-done video. One thing was missing. What does this level of prepurchase inspection cost??? It is probably well-worth it, but would be painful if you guys gave a no-go on the car. I realize the cost savings for a big mistake would more than offset the exam costs..... but you leave empty handed, regardless!!
great video would be possible to make same style about 997.1/2??

@@PorscheClubofAmerica thank you its just shame in our counry due taxation on luxury and sport cars (due emition) prices are higher than in other coutries Even import from neighbors Sweden or Germany its +30% tax from purchase price. Exemption old cars over 25 years old.
What type or brand diagnostic software is that?

Pulling the sump pan didn't seem very useful. What did this tell him about the health of the engine, other than the minor quibble about the sealant? I was hoping he'd be able to visually inspect the crankshaft bearings or similar.
