Porsche 996 GT3 cup car walk round. See what a factory race car looks like up close and personal

Guided tour of a genuine factory Porsche 996 GT3 cup car talking about how it differs from a normal road car.
Porsche are one of the few manufacturers that build and sell pure race cars alongside their road going vehicles. The GT3 Cup cars are used to compete in various championships and one off races.
In the UK the Carrera Cup forms part of the BTCC British Touring Car Championship programme. World wide the Porsche Supercup forms part of the Formula One programme.
This car has mostly been raced in longer endurance events up to and including 24 Hour races.

    Brilliant video - love the 996 Cup’s, but it’s a rare thing to find a video showing the car, never mind taking the time to run through all of the details and explaining the reasoning behind the modifications. Thanks 👍🏻

    The Mk2 styling had some advantage for front end grip on the cup cars. The car is actually a Mk1 but race cars tend to go through quite a lot of transformations.

    That's a really cool video. Thanks. It's really tidy car with a great standard of finish for a race car. I have a 2003/4 model mostly used for track days. Can I ask you what spec the doors are and whether they were expensive? They look more solid than the originals and I was impressed you could lean on the driver's door as you got out without hearing a crack! Also is the spoiler itself the original spec? Obviously the mount extensions are after market. Last question is about the shift lights. How tricky are they to install and is the unit pricey? Sorry for so many questions. Final thought - would be great to see it at Rennsport Collective in November. Only a couple of 996 cups in the group so far. The other one is also set up for endurance racing and ran at Daytona I believe. Joseph

    Thanks. Very much in it's working clothes. Bizarrely because I never had any big accidents we put it on a jig just to check alignment and tidy up any welds that had opened up over the years towards the end of it's racing career. It could use a new front PU and the rear PU has been adapted to suit the variety of exhausts we had to run. Straight through system at Spa was always my favourite. Doors are standard 996 GT3 cup car items, rear spoiler is wider than standard I think, probably RS spec from memory. It was changed ages ago. Shift lights were on when I got the car a couple of years into it's life, I can't see they would be that hard or expensive to fit.

  • @911virgin8

    @911virgin8

    3 жыл бұрын

    Ah yes. The 4th generation Jimny finally broke into 100bhp territory. I don't think Suzuki ever quoted official 0-62 times (assuming it goes that fast), but your best bet on Top Trumps would be weight which for an off roader is surprisingly close to a tonne. Of course you then have to add a driver which in some cases can get you back into 1,500kg.

  • @lesrichards33

    The battery looked a bit on the big side for a racer where weight is a factor.

    You have to remember this is set up as an endurance car rather than a sprint car. A couple of KG saved could bite you in the bum when you're needing the battery to support a failing alternator or to drive the car off the track on it's starter motor etc. There are a number of options for battery mounting positions to allow for different options.
