Porsche 992 911 Turbo S fastest, most expensive, worth it?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Let's take a closer look at what the 992 generation Porsche Turbo S does well and what it does not do so well. Until the release of the GT2 this is the fastest 911 in straight line and the most expensive.

I’ve owned a Carrera S, a 992 Turbo S and now a 991.2 GT3 Touring and 993. All are great cars, but in no circumstance did the Carrera outperform the Turbo S in the corners. The turn in, grip and cornering speeds on the Turbo S are way higher and the steering feel is the same, if not better. The Touring owns all when it comes to this stuff and I get why someone might prefer a RWD, manual 992 with a more linear engine. Personally, I think the Turbo S is more fun than the PDK Carrera S. The air-cooled cars and GT cars are on another level. For me: Carrera S < Turbo S < GT3T/993

I'll leave feeling alone because it's a vague term for cars and means different things to different people, but plenty of cars handle very well. Corvettes do, especially since c6 on up; RX-7/RX-8, Miatas, OG NSXs from the 90s, just about any Lotus, to name a few. Furthermore, the Gen 5 Viper ACR will go toe-to-toe with any Porsche in the handling department. I own a 911 but I'm a car guy first and foremost, I've had the pleasure to drive many, with Porsche and Vipers being my favorite; Corvette isn't far behind, and the Nissan GT-R was a dream car when I was in early college.

Nick, your points are all correct. What you miss, is this car is exactly what it is designed to be. The perfect Grand Touring automobile. Spend a day in a Turbo S carving the Alps or driving through the city, and you will exit feeling refreshed. Try driving a GT3, or even a Carerra T for more than an hour, and your back hurts, your ears ring, and your arms, legs, and shoulders are tired from constantly shifting. It is true that a GT3 will out corner the TTS (easily), but I have yet to see a track without a straight bit sufficient to often make up the deficit in time. Put the same tires on both cars and watch the advantage of the lighter track built car further fade away. As far as a stock Carerra walking away in the twisty bits…well I would have to see that for myself. If you are a person that grew up with an automatic transmission in your moms Vista Cruiser and have always dreamed of grinding gears like the old race car drivers of yesteryear, I can understand the fascination with shifting. However, there is nothing fast, or efficient, with gear grinding since the PDK was released. The same with loud pipes. The only people that enjoy a loud car are the ones that made it that way, and that is only if they are not subjected to the drone for more than an hour at a time. Finally, I would say that anyone could easily drive a TTS a 100 miles to the Nurburg Ring, take three laps, then drive home and be ready to do it again the next day. To do that in a Carrera T, well you could, but it would have to be someone who enjoys the punishment of the experience, rather than the comfort of luxury. Oh, BTW, the TTS would kill any other 911 (short of track focused cars) in virtually any kind of street driving (and most tracks), because it is not running on a go cart track without a straightaway.

I have 3,000 miles on a 2022 Turbo S Lightweight I custom ordered in June 2021 and received in June 2022. Solid as a bank vault Launch control entertaining as the car truly puts the power down with its AWD. Is it not as engaging as lesser Porsche models? I would imagine .My McLaren 600 LT feels so nimble /lithe/sporty in comparison. I have the carbon bucket seats Alcantara steering wheel and bits plus carbon roof and mirrors all of which I like and all make the car a visually more appealing and sporty feeling to me personally as I have decades of exotic car ownership after getting away from boring (styling wise)P cars. So the TS is an awesome piece of engineering perfection that can be engaging when driven fast on a track or in the mountains/canyons The more I drive the TS the more I like it . Nevertheless I agree there are certainly more engaging / fun to drive / sporty choices /way less expensive choices out there

In the smoky mountains, on some of the curviest roads on the earth, literally, Turbos dominate. They're so capable in the corners and explosive in the straights that nothing can really keep up. I can't speak to the fun factor, I've never driven one. But Nick will also tell you that manuals are more fun. On the twistiest roads in the smoky mountains the PDK is honestly a lot of fun. You're constantly, and I mean constantly, shifting between 2nd and 3rd. The paddles make that a lot of fun. I'd say the guys/gals who drive in the mountains with us are split 50/50 on which transmission they prefer. But you won't find anyone there claim the Turbo is not fun. My guess, it's not fun going straight

You are absolutely right, the car is devastatingly fast (and in my opinion handles very well still) but it is a complete soulless snoozefest to drive at anything less than 9/10. Because of the ludicrous price, the value proposition in my opinion is very, very poor. Ever since that two week trip, I steer all potential 911 buyers to a base model or at most, a C2S. There is absolutely no need to spend more money to get the full 911 experience. Leave the Turbo S to the newly rich youtubers with no imagination. Thanks for the video

It also feels much more stable at high speeds. This car finally fulfills my life long search for the ultimate accelerating car as nothing can approach the feeling of power it conveys. I have been through numerous V12 Mercedes and several Corvettes, including two C8s, that cannot come close. Ii's really with a sense of relief that I have finally found the ultimate.

I completely disagree with your negatives on the Turbo S. As one who owns a fast, manual transmission, rear wheel drive 911, I always find myself yearning for AWD and PDK when I am driving the car hard. One just cannot shift a manual fast enough when a car is very fast. AWD prevents oversteer from too much throttle in corners, which can be very alarming. Then there is always the concern with a manual of an erroneous down shift blowing the engine. I personally find needing a diaper for hard driving hardly a pro. I will take the PDK and AWD any day over the alternative.

Ours handles incredibly. No matter how hard you try to push through or out of a corner, it grips and digs its claws into the road. Ive actually tried to get it to get squirmy, and it wont because the car knows exactly what you want to do next, and it helps you do it. We threw an Akrapovic exhaust on ours, and its one of the loudest cars in the entire area.

I struggled mightily when thinking about buying a Turbo S Cab which I just finally did a week ago. My biggest problem was that throughout the US there was not a single dealer with a proper allocation that would allow me to get one in less that 3 years, because of waiting lists and short supply. At my age (71) that kind of a wait was not advisable and I was lucky enough to find a CPO 2023 Turbo S Cab with 40 miles on it, honest to God (warranted until 2029). I will enjoy it for whatever time I have left but one thing is for sure...mastering all the features and functions by reading the dreadful written and digital manuals will take at least months. No complaint here, though, other than to say that these dealers marking these "used" Turbo S models up $40-50K above sticker price from a year or two ago is highway robbery. But since it will be my last, so what. I do need a video on how to fully operate the navigation which came easier to me in my traded in 2018 911 GTS 4. See you all in traffic court ;). This is a SpaceX Falcon 9 on 4 tires.

The 911 Turbos are thoroughly GT cars. They're meant to do anything at all in any weather. Thinking it doesn't handle is wrong, they handle and grip very well and have crazy brakes. It's just that the limits are so high that it's hard to approach them, a bit like the other "GT" versions of the 911. For sure, the RWD cars are more of a driver's car, though. I also agree that the price of the Turbo cars has gone off the reservation... $220K USD is a lot of cash for a base Turbo S. Frankly the "sport" package is a waste of money, I agree with that as well. I would like an axle lift ... because some driveways I have scraped mine on (2017). I'm not sure that the Burmester is worth it though I have it, I would recommend getting the standard Bose and upgrading it aftermarket.

The Turbo S is a ballistic continental cruiser which is also a dam good sports car, no it's not a GT3, but you have admitted you cannot daily a GT3, where you can the Turbo S. I would also suggest that MOST drivers would end up having a mighty big accident in a 640bhp rear wheel drive only Turbo S, witness the older GT2's. I have spec'd up a Turbo S and there's absolutely no reason to add more than £15,000 of extra's.

I had a 991 Tutbo s and recently test drove a couple of dealer demo cars........... i was thinking 40kg wasn't going to be much diffrence but it was, not only does the reduction in sound deadning give the car more soul there was a noticable handling improvment and the performance seemed sharper (quick google says the Lightweight does 0-60 in 2.2 as oposed to the full fat 2.7). As i say getting out of a 991 Turbo s and stright into the Lightweight was a bit of a shock to the system and thats the car i have ordered, the only thing that may have put me off was the lack of rear seats but i can live with that.

A friend is a privat racecar driver at the Nordschleife. Drives his 991 GTS RS MR "Manthay Racing" at around 6.50 min BTG and took my car for some laps. He was very impressed and said it is a weapon. Yes, the car is expensive and you definitely don't need it for general street use. The GTS could be an alternative, but they are also quite expensive. Kind of sad, that they don't test the turbo s with cup 2 tires on track. It is a game changer. Guess Porsche doesn't want it - results are to good compared to GT-Cars. Let's see.
