PORSCHE 928: Weird Science fan purchases DREAM CAR

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Made popular in movies such as Weird Science and Risky Business, the Porsche 928 was ahead of its time. Debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 1977, the Porsche 928 was to replace the iconic Porsche 911. Even though history had different plans, it didn't stop people from falling in love with this luxury grand tourer.
Meet Darren Smith from Wake Forest, NC. He was twelve years old when he fell in love with Porsche 928. While visiting the Porsche dealership with his father, Darren immediately gravitated to the 928. "It was love at first sit". Unfortunately for him, his father chose a 911.
"Life moves on, you get older, [owning a Porsche 928] takes a backseat," said Darren. Unbeknownst to him, 38 years later, he would buy his dream car.
In this interview, Darren shares what it's like to maintain a rare and finicky automobile. He shares what it takes to buy a vehicle like this, the importance of having support from family members, and what it feels like to wait 38 years to have a dream come true.

Well done for Darren. My story mirrors yours exactly. I fell in love with the 928 in 1985 at the age of 15. Finally bought a 1989 S4 in February of 2021. Ive always fantasized about these cars, even to this day..Im 63 and test drove these in my late 20's..they were the stuff of dreams and had a Special, ultra unique quality about them..be it the body style or the dogleg 5 spd or the dash, it exuded a Differentness and gave off a low key exotic feel as opposed to a "Look at me" one.

I always admired the 928's as well. It was just out of this world back in the 90's even (when I was a young guy). The design has certainly aged well. I think people are finally starting to realize how well built car this was. It was always overshadowed as a classic car by air cooled 911's but maybe things are changing. Good GT's and GTS's demand high money these days. Enjoy your 928. Great video!!!

I've owned 9 Porsche's over the past 25 years, including two manual (85 & 86) 928's for a total of 16 years. I can honestly say that I've never owned any car that was more reliable and have never once experienced a single electrical issue (gremlin). They are amazingly fun to drive & absolutely rock solid in every aspect. The 85-86 are the sweet spot IMHO, because they're the only years where you have the original body style combined with the glorious 5.0 liter 32V V8. My advice is to find yourself the lowest mileage & properly cared for (service history & manual) example possible before they blow up even more in value and appreciate to the point that they actually deserve to be.

This is one of my dream cars and by far to me the best looking Porsche ever. It is so unique and yes, the back end is legendary. But I have to say, the 944, 944 Turbo, and 928 S4 are the best looking front end designs Porsche ever made IMO. I have only driven the 944. I grew up reading Car & Driver, Motor Trend and when I saw the S4, I thought it was the greatest car ever. I've obtained one of my dream cars already, but this is definitely on the short list of 3 and obtainable. The third (not so obtainable) is the McLaren F1.

I've allways loved the 928. Like you, I noticed them before I was a teenager. They are so special, the design, the amazing sounding engine, all the tech innovations and how well balanced they made the car. Almost bought one in 2001, but, I realized it would be irresponsible of me to think I could daily one due to the cost of maintenance and my limited mechanical knowledge being much younger back then.

I like this guy and feel similarly. I had different interests, had three 911s, life took over, then when I put my head up again, I'd "lost the bug." Then...it came back -- hard -- and I hunted for and got, similarly, through the Rennlist 928 forum, a beautifully-sorted 89 S4. I had an 89 C4, 96 C4 and an 01 911TT and I treat this car far more reverently. That TT was like an appliance -- a great one, but still -- uninvolving. I am so much more attentive to the S4, check cold oil and coolant levels etc before I even dare start it up. Always scanning the dash during drives to check oil temp and pressure levels. The 911s were like set it and forget it -- and I loved them all. 928s are weird. That's fine with me

I saw 928s and always thought they looked cool when they flipped up those lights on the autobahn to make others move over and loved that beautiful rear end with the scalloped out rear tailghts when they passed by when I was stationed in the army in Germany in the mid 80s. Finally got a chance to get my dream guards red tan interior 928s with the subtle front and rear spoilers that I always thought were understated and tasteful. Bought my 1984 928s from the original owner's son after he had a stroke and could no longer drive it. It had under 60k miles on it in 2015. I have put 15k miles on it the last 7 yrs. All of them chocolate miles on beautiful weekend days. Too much reverence to waste it in commuter traffic and risk it getting damaged or wrecked. What makes it more special to me than any other car on earth is that it got me to my mom's funeral in Feb 2016 right after valentine's day. By all rights I should have missed the funeral but this car got me there and for that I will always be eternally grateful. And I got there in a car that is red the same color as a valentine for my mom that I loved more than anyone in my life. Every time I look at this red car I can't help but think of getting to her funeral the day after valentine's day and I give thanks to the Lord that I was able to be there for her as she was for me all those years. I have gone through rough times since then but have held onto this car through thick and thin.

Hi Darren. I don't know if you will see my message. But know that you put tears in my eyes. I happen to have the exact same passion as you and since the same age. I am 48 years old and I have been dreaming of owning a Porsche 928 since I was 12/13 years old. Life's priorities have always put imperatives ahead of this dream. It's not just a question of means but of priorities (I'm waiting for a Tesla in a few days... but it's the family car and we can't do everything at the same time). I've probably seen all the reports in the world on the Porsche 928, in English as well as in French (I'm French), but I've never seen a story that touched me so much because of the sincerity of the message. It's not only about a car, but also about a part of your own childhood, your memories. Things said simply and from the heart. I have never even had the opportunity to sit in a 928 let alone drive one. I just know that I hope I don't end my life without one in my garage. And my only certainty then is that it will never leave my house after having taken up residence on the walls of my childhood bedroom for so many years, on simple posters. I wish you all the best with your 928, it moved me a lot to see this video. I continue on my side to pursue the dream. If one day it comes true, I will certainly have a little thought for this report. And even if we don't know each other, I wish you the best. Christophe

Had to wait till I turned 41 to buy the car I dreamed of since I first saw one from close. Found in Miami a low mileage manual S4, black with linen leather seats. Still have it 31 years after. Brought it back to France, and still can't believe how lucky I am to be able to drive it several times a month except in winter. Still beautiful, amazingly comfortable and stable at illegal speeds. A head-turner more than ever, which doesn't really matters to me, but each time I look at it, I find it as gorgeous as on day one. I even stare at it in my garage, and thank again my Dear wife who has always liked the car and never, ever, even in tough times, asked me part with it. I hope to be able to continue driving 'the beast' a few more years !

So funny I had one I drove the wheels off of it. S4. Problem is they are 80 percent trashed cause you can drive two 911s for the cost of keeping the 928 on the road. 2nd many can't work on it. This car has features I bet you haven't found yet. Like the little panel on the passenger side kick panel you can unplug the fuse so you can tank some 87 octane incase you run out of fuel somewhere. . 928 is one of the sweetest cars . You can pinch wires just pulling the cluster out.. only reason I know this is the car I learned how to work on. Only one guy I would trust working on this bad boy if you can't yourself. He is in Atlanta. He is the 928 God. European classics 👌 🙌 this car is also very fast end speed is insane for the time they were built. I got my 928 for 3600 bucks had 86000 miles not rips back side window leather was perfect.. I only bought it cause I could work on it.

The 928 looked like a space ship, a jaw dropping sight compared to the vast majority of grey hum drum cars of that era. @@RealRidez Thanks a lot, the 928 S4 was hands down the greatest car I ever owned. I’ve owned gutsy performance cars like Saab and BMW in the 1990s and they simply paled by comparison. The 928 wasn’t a conventional car owning driving exercise, on reflection after 13 years and only 100,000 km it was a great life changing experience, and Im happy and proud I lived my boyhood dream of owning a 928. I sold it to a wealthy Scottish collector, after losing my job and hitting a rough patch back in 2015. At least he had the means to maintain and keep it running in excellent form to this day. Back in the 80's my then girlfriends older brother had one. I got to ride shotgun and fell for the sheer bold design and futurism I could not really handle. Ever since that I always wanter one and finally 2013 bought my 1989 S4. I will stay with this until i kick the bucket. My son can then deside what to do about it .

I loved the 928 from the first year it was introduced in 1978 to the last year of it's production. Would drool riding pass the Porsche dealership when I was young. Porsche back then had a outstanding line, 928, 911, 944 and each car had it's own character.

Omg! Im wondering where do you go from there; owning a dream car of that era, in that era at a young age. I knew a few rich kids who got expensive things on a platter from parents without trying and they didn’t turn out well, failing spectacularly in life. At least you sound like you really enjoyed and appreciated gifts that would be a lifelong dream for many folks to accomplish.

I too have always loved the 928 since I was a kid! It’s not my favorite sports car of all time (that honor would probably go to the Z32 300ZX) but it’s definitely in my top-five, if not higher. I’ve just always loved it more than the 911 (though I also love the 911) because it is so different and cool, even to this day. Man it would be awesome if Porsche resurrected the 928 similar to what Ford did with the GT back in 2005! I’d buy one in a second (as long as they didn’t turn it into some stupid EV)!

The manual transmission in the early cars was very delicate. They got better in the later cars. But the Mercedes-Benz built automatic is truly bulletproof and suits the car very well. To each his own.
