Porsche 911 997 Buyer's Guide - (2005-2013) Models, Trims, Specs, & More
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
►As Porsche has shown us, evolution is good, and the 997 911 might just be the best example of that.
The Porsche 997 came in over twenty different model variants with thirteen different engines, it really isn’t easy trying to decipher which model has which engine, and to be fair, you won’t have to do that. As long as you know which family your engine comes from, you’ll be able to learn about their various pros and cons.

Bought my 2005 997.1 carrera about 4 years ago with 135k miles on it. Today it has 175k miles and it’s been THE most reliable car I’ve owned. What a great car it is. Nothing but oil changes, brake pads, and smiles!

Another 👍 for 05 997.1 C2S. But I’ve only got under 40k miles. Only work a few miles away and only drive it a couple days a week. Absolutely love the car tho (didn’t like paying for the IMS solution as a preventative measure tho).

All of the 997’s are just fantastic. No doubt they will all be commanding big prices in the future. Same as the 993.
As the owner of the 997 opposite spectrum; a 997.1 Carrera 2 M6-spd, and a 997.2 GT3 RS 3.8 (only M6-spd), I can honestly say either end is such a fun, entertaining and engaging drive! The prices have corrected and understandably for good reasons - few cars can offer the reliability, enjoyment and pleasure of ownership as these “super-cars”!

That’s awesome. Lucky guy. I recently drove to my buddies, who happens to live up a canyon in my 7.1 C2S (with a few mods) and the point of the meeting was to drive his 997.2 GT3 with lots of GMG goodies, his 981 GT4 and Lotus Evora 410 sport (all 6MT). He kind of wondered why I didn’t care to drive the 720, but I don’t care for automatics. Driving home I was actually surprised that I wasn’t disappointed in driving my “boring” C2S back, I guess it’s a testament to how great the platform is (don’t get me wrong, a 7.2 RS would be my dream car, even the 3.8).

You will be hard pressed to find someone outside of Porsche themselves more knowledgeable than Nathan. If you are lucky to purchase a car from him, which I have, you know exactly what you are getting. He is rare in the automotive resell world, I’ve learned so much from him directly and through his videos.
This is the video I've needed. Not because I'm planning on getting a porka, just that i like watching videos
Thinking about picking up one of these soon. Right now they’re going for $45k - $50k which is a lot of money for a car built in 2007, but the reviews of these cars have been nothing short of glowing. I’ve never purchased a sports car before and I feel like getting a 997 is the equivalent of getting a Yamaha R6 as a first bike (my biker fans understand the reference), but I’m a mature driver and I’ve been head over heels over this car the past few months.

If it wasn't for bore scoring I'd highly recommend getting one. They're still a good choice though. Just make sure you get a PPI before purchasing and have it included checking the cylinder walls for scoring. If it's clean make sure to use quality oil and filter, when you cold start the car wait until the high idle drops down to standard idle, and then don't go above 3k rpm before the oil temperature is fully warmed up.
The information he is communicating is next level. Great job!
Excellent breakdown, thank you!

Great review. The Turbos and GT3’s are great of course but I found a nice sweet spot in the 997.1 S w/ manual and sport chrono. Fast and sporty, yet still good as a reliable daily driver. Durable and still easy to DIY oil and brake changes. Really responds well to a sharp alignment.

Sport Chrono is an awesome option to have on any of these 911s. And we totally agree, they're plenty fast, eye-catching, and a proper alignment really wakes them up in terms of response. Both the 996 and 997 are both great DIY platforms too.

M97 engine models... AOS Bore scoring IMS is still a risk but not as much as it is in the 996. Door latch pivot attached to the inside handle breaks. Climate toggle switches have the exterior wear down. Rear tail lights are brittle on the corners. Front grill catches leaves and dirt which eventually causes radiator leaks if not constantly cleaned out. Without adding a mesh screen on the front grill rocks can fly up and damage the radiators. Motor mounts sag. Coils degrade and crack. Mezger engine models... Coolant line fitting glue degrades and fails. Plastic Coolant elbows degrade and break. Hydraulics for the rear wing degrade and fail. Same issues as said above for the door latch, lights, switches, radiators, mounts, and coils.

@@sutherlacd27 Thanks, the only possible issue may be the age, as we have some really tough new laws come in for low emissions, where a daily change is placed on cars older than a certain year and it’s likely to get reduced in the near future, so a 996 is definitely not an option for me, as are some early 997s. I kind of need to buy as new as I can, without going to a 991 if I can help it.
Great, very informative video, thank you!

What a great model. I owned an '06 997cab S back in 2009 and found it a blast to drive. I always drove Bimmers but had to have a Porsche. The looks and ergonomics of this car! It was Certified at a VA dealer so I didn't have all the worry about repair. Alas, too much power and temptation for me and sold it 6 months later to a very happy Canadian fellow who had to have one with the cocoa top and interior. Can't blame him.

Love your vid, i own gen 2 997 C4S PDK in meteor grey metallic with sport chrono. Bought it in lockdown 2020, its my daily driver and will never sell it. Am from London and have recently moved to Dartmoor national park Devon. Plenty of reasons for lifestyle change and the quality of driving roads in the SW of England was one of them. Have made several upgrades 2 of which i can highly recommend 1. Wheel spacers all round, 15mm on the back and 7mm on the fronts, enhances grip especially exiting corners when on a spirited drive and aesthetically the wheels all round fill the wheel arch giving a more aggressive stance. 997 definitely feels more planted on under braking on poor quality tarmac, 2. Steering wheel upgrade, out with the stock toggle shift steering wheel and in its place a 991.2 multifunction paddle shift steering wheel. This upgrade enhances driving experience again with downshift on the left and up shifts to the right, upgrade also allows all phone accessibility from wheel. If considering wheel upgrade, when installing wheel from 991.2 you have to remember that sport chrono can only b accessed in gen 2 997 from centre console, where sport chrono in 991.2 in available via a tiny drive wheel attached to the steering wheel itself, (drive Wheel easily deleted). Thanks again for your incite into 997 generation. Regards Mark in Dartmoor

I bought an auto as I have nerve damage from an operation in my left foot. Also there are more available at a decent price. Don’t for get this chap was from London near me so traffic is horrendous. Now he’s out in Dartmoor he can later get a manual and he has already added spacers which is something I wouldn’t do in London from fear of kerbing. You can learn a lot from the words of someone’s comment! Also the PDK is great. Manual would be probably nicer but needs must. I will consider that steering wheel change. The button shifters are crap but I also have heated alcantara with multifunction which I am already liking. Need more info on the 991.2 wheel.
You really know the 997 and feel you know the rest just as well. I am in the business so its nice to find out the details.

Yes indeed, the best 997 review I've been privy to thus far. I wish that gentleman was my mechanic - on a very routine basis I fully enjoy driving my 2011 Turbo-wheel PDK PSE 997.2 C2S. The best 911 is the one that you own; there is nothing like a Porsche 911, there is nothing like manipulating that rear-engine pendulum of bliss to dredge your way past the still coffins on the highway.

I currently have a 2023 MKV Supra 6MT and itching to get into a Porsche and decided on a 2012 911 Carrera S 997.2. Would this be a good entry into Porsche?
Between the design of a flat 6 and the cylinder lining materials. It appears to be “when” not “if” on cylinder scoring for Porsches. Do most people just live with it either being oblivious or aware & don’t care? Seems there’s some good advice to mitigate or slow the situation, but hard to jump full in on these cars given this issue
A manual/base carrera 997.1 with almost 200,000Km is a good option for €30k or is it worth the €10k more for a model with fewer kilometers?
