Richard Beckingsdale was the father of Kate Beckingsdale, she is probably most famous for Underworld. He died at 31 sadly. Which reminds me, Rising Damp is another series around this time.

I am so, so glad you're reacting to Porridge. I gave up suggesting it thinking that there was some copyright risk. Don't let the age of it put you off. It really is one of the best sitcoms. Fletcher reminds me of my grandad: witty, sharp-tongued and always with a hustle on the go.
Ronnie Barker is amazing in this show as Fletcher. I recommend watching some of his Two Ronnies sketches to see just how much he disappears into this role, he is almost unrecognizable. Incredible actor.

There was a pilot episode prior to this, which is just as good. It covers Fletcher being escorted to the prison. There was also a spin-off series called Going Straight.

Yeah, it was a one-off called Prisoner and Escort, about Mackay and Barrowclough taking Fletcher up to the prison by train. It was part of the series Seven of One, where Ronnie Barker made seven thirty minute episodes based around different characters. Two episodes were spun off into sitcoms starring Barker - Porridge and Open All Hours.

Brilliant. Will be watching all these. Not sure if you know but the young guy (Richard Beckinsale) is Holywood actress Kate Beckinsales Dad. He died very young.
Amazingly, Fulton Mackay (Mr Mackay) went on to be in the UK version of Fraggle Rock. Also, Heslop was (amongst lots other roles) Rottweiler in Bottom.

So glad to see this, Porridge is the peak of British sitcoms for me, one of those shows where I watch one episode and I end up watching the lot in less than a week
Godbers character is Kate Beckinsdales dad in real life, but he sadly died young..
I used to watch this with my folks as a kid.
One of the best sitcoms of all time, amazing characters and my favorite Ronnie barker character with Fletcher, just great stuff
Just watched a documentary on Porridge. There was an American remake called On The Rocks.

So glad your doing porridge it’s just perfection
You should watch "Prisoner and Escort" the pilot episode of the BBC sitcom Porridge. It was originally broadcast on 1 April 1973 as part of a series of pilot shows with the overall title Seven of One. In this episode, Norman Stanley Fletcher is transported from London to Slade Prison by Mr Mackay and Mr Barrowclough.
You see those flasks over there, I want you to fill one for me "What from here" that is brilliant I love that line😆😂🤣👍
The bald headed criminal, the 3rd new arrival. Is the actor, who played Mr Rottweiler in season 1 of "Bottom". The episode "GAS".
I watched this when I was a kid, good memories. There is also "Dad's army", a sitcom based on British ww2 home guard. Well worth a look. 👍
I’m glad you got round to porridge. Stick with it, it’s gets funnier with each episode 😊

This is a great series. Fun fact: Richard Beckinsale is actually the father of the actress Kate Beckinsale. I'd recommend checking out another show starring Ronnie Barker called Open All Hours and I'd also recommend checking out another show with Richard Beckinsale called Rising Damp. I think you'd like both of them, Open All Hours also features David Jason from Only Fools and Horses. Btw the American sitcom actor John Mahoney actually cited Rising Damp as his favourite sitcom of all time.

There were some very nice ideas for sitcoms back in the day. One set in a prison, one in a little northern corner shop and one in a tatty boarding house. All three very original, clever, well written and cast. They were all brilliant, and very popular for decades here, much repeated. Of the three, I probably prefer Rising Damp best of all.

Rising Damp was absolutely hilarious... Leonard Rossiter, like Ronnie Barker, was a comedy genius
Godber was Richard Beckinsale. Kate Beckinsale’s father. He died aged 31 when she was a kid. He also starred in “Rising Damp” which featured Leonard Rossiter who was one of the best comic actors ever. “The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin” was pure brilliance.
Without a doubt my favourite program growing up and it's still just great 😊
Josh don't forget to watch "Going Straight" after this. It's the next part of Porridge.
Ronnie Barker is epic, another series with him is "Open all hours" with David Jason (Del Boy)
Great choice. Shows what you can do within pretty strict limitations. Just watched them all recently. Classic. 👌🏼

Only Fools And Horses , Porridge , Dads Army.......The Best of British
Fulton Mackay pretty much invented his own character. The walk, facial expressions and mannerisms all came from him, without the need for direction. He is also much loved as the lighthouse keeper in the UK version of Fraggle Rock.
Wow , amazing your reviewing this , super classic uk comedy 👍🙂
Ronnie Barker comedy genius
This is in my top 3 classic British sitcoms with only fools and horse's / rising damp.
The young bloke, Lenny Godber, is played by the late Richard Beckinsale. Actress Kate Beckinsale’s father. He sadly died very young.
Did you recognise Heslop the thick one (Brian Glover) he was Mr Rottweiler, Richie and Eddie's neighbour in the Bottom episode Gas.

Porridge, brilliant. Thanks Josh, Ronnie Barker is a genius of comic timing x
Love this show. Heads up: It's not a show that has huge character arcs, and the comedy is quite gentle in its way; it's about the 'small victories' (if you want to go a bit philosophical, you could talk about Camus and Existentialist Absurdism, but who wants to go all philosophical?). If you're looking for the biggest clue to Fletcher, in this episode (played by Ronnie Barker of the Two Ronnies), and the heart of the show, look to the moment when Fletch ducks down to skew the measurement of his height - it serves no real purpose other than thwarting authority in a tiny way; refusing to be defined or categorised; and just the simple amusement of knowing you got one over on them. These minute acts of defiance, and the planning, and game playing that goes into finding illicit pleasures and perks, are what keeps Fletch sane; as are the moments when an act of kindness or generosity come to pass. Godber is the young character, who was played by Richard Beckinsale (Kate Beckinsale's father) who was also famous for his role in another classic UK sitcom, Rising Damp (he died tragically young, I'm sorry to say). The rest of the episodes are centred on Fletch and Godber for the most part, with Fletch taking the youth under his wing, but don't expect some sort of character transformation or epiphanies. That said, there are lessons for us all, in Porridge. After all, wasn't it Rosseau that said, "Man is born free and everywhere he is in chains"? Oops, more philosophy creeping in there. Just enjoy the small victories, and a few laughs.
In case the jargon isn't familiar - There are no toilets in the cells, they each have a potty/whatever you call them. "Slop out" is when they all get out of the cell and empty those pots. It's grim.
You may recognise the actor Brian Glover (Heslop in this). He was the chess player in An American Werewolf In London, and the prison warden in Alien 3.

Fantastic.. I'm really pleased your doing Porridge.. You won't regret it..
Used to know a bloke who was inside at the time of this and was informed any minor annoyance of warders was punished by making you miss this deliberately, so highly was it rated.
The 4 main characters are Fletcher, Godber (the young cat. Lol). And the 2 gusrds, Mr Mackay and Mr Barrowclough (the one holding the tray). There will be other faces that reappear, but those are the main 4. A fun fact is, that Mr Mackay was played by the Scottish actor Fulton Mackay.
The actor who plays godber is Kate beckinsale dad, David Jason plays a character, and the guy who plays the Gestapo officer in raiders of the lost ark is in it
Another early 1970s series you should see is "Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?" - there's only two series, 13 episodes each, plus a Xmas special. Top notch throughout.
This was one of those great British TV series that didn't overdo itself to the point of being a bunch of identical episodes. I'd put this in the same class as Red Dwarf and One Foot In The Grave.
Porridge, the 1970s. I used to watch it as a young teenager. 1974 it started.
One of the absolute best! So good! 😂👌🏻
Yes, at last, it is one our best, Fletch played by Ronnie barker from the two Ronnie's, also need to watch open all hours with Ronnie barker and Del from only fools and horses brilliant, the young man godba is kate Beckinsale dad he is in another brilliant comedy called rising damp.
Ronald Lacey (Harris) also played the bishop of Bath and Wells in Blackadder 2. “It’s poker time!”
"What are you in for?" "Got caught."
Mr McKay, my hero, what a character. Loved this programme. Special Duties!
Richard Beckinsale is the father of Kate Beckinsale of the Underworld film series fame. Sadly Richard died only a few years after Porridge, at the age of 31.
Ronnie Barker was an absolute legend in Britain. One of our finest comedy actors & a very skilled writer. Hope you enjoy this series it's in my top 5 comedy series. A few slang terms & colloquialisms may fall flat, but the performances, writing & timing is 2nd to none
Great classic series with the late great Ronnie Barker, while slightly slower than what you have usually watched, such as OFAH or Red Dwarf, it is still funny as hell at times, and the story of prison life with these characters is immensely enjoyable, truly a must! :) Oh, and don't forget, there is a feature length film of Porridge, called... Porridge [:D], it was released over your side of the pond but named "Doing Time", it was actually one of the last appearances of Richard Beckinsdale [Kate Beckinsdale's dad], the actor who played Godber, sadly, he died soon after it was filmed.
Kate beckinsales dad played godber
One of if not the best sitcom ever made, starring the greatest comedy actor ever Ronnie Barker
Porridge is amazing
All together now 'Underground, overground, Wombling free...."
09:10 That joke was recycled into one of the more obscure James Bond films. 15:50 The one thing you must remember about the cast is that the lead character's played by Ronnie Barker, the Qui-Gon Jinn of comedy character role.
There was a pilot episode to this Porridge called 'Prisoner and Escort". In this episode, Fletch is being transported to Slade Prison and tries to escape. But his escape bid goes wrong. It's very funny and well worth watching
Loved this show as a kid and still watch it now. Storm in a tea cup will always be my favourite episode
Officer Mackay played by Fulton Mackay was the only human, The captain, in the UK version of Fraggle Rock, USA had Doc. they used his real name in Porridge .
Trust me, it only gets better.
Slipping the tray in to the guards hands. Mint.
Ronnie Barker was a comedy genius & Porridge has to be one of the best comedy series ever.
Richard Beckinsdale is the father of the talented Kate. Mr McKay is played by the brilliant Fulton McKay. Fulton was a superb actor who was in Local Hero which is a must see film.
Wonderful choice of comedy when it was at its best.
There's a pilot episode with Fletcher being transported up to Slade prison with Mr Barraclough. Very funny.
Fantastic nice one Josh love porridge👍👌❤❤
Same era as Rising damp. 70s were the best
WORTHY OF NOTE The young chap Lennie Godba was played by the late Richard Beckinsale, father of Kate Beckinsale (UNDERWORLD 1 - 5, VAN HELSING, EMMA)
Cannot believe you are doing this, I'm definitely here for this journey. There's also a couple of movies and Christmas specials
Porridge is pure gold! Despite being made in the 70's, 'most' of the humour is still relevant today. RIP the legend that is Ronnie Barker.
Interesting fact, the man that plays Godper is Richard Beckinsale, Kate Beckinsales father.
You missed off the pilot, which was part of another series of one-off shows. Its worth going back and watching. It's called "Prisoner And Escort".
Porridge is a joy. You are in for such a treat! *:)*
The comment about the tea is from an old rumour that, in British prisons, the screws would put bromide in it in order to curb the prisoners sex drives and keep the men docile.
Absolutely love this comedy xx thank you so much mate xxx
Ronnie Barker (fletch) is David Jason’s (del) hero in real life and was his best friend
I'm happy to see you've started to watch Porridge, you're in for a real treat, one of the best sitcoms ever made, with the late great legend Ronnie Barker (Fletcher)
_Kate Beckinsale's_ dad in this (playing _Godber_ ) >*tsk* lol
Ronnie Barker (chubby guy aka Fletcher) was a very smart chap. Bit of a wordsmith. Timing and delivery were everything to him. The 'bad feet' and 'fill the glass' bits are great examples of that. I know a few prison officers who actually used to refer to Porridge as the instruction manual for new officers who had never worked in a prison before. Additionally, at the start of each episode you hear a judge passing Fletcher's prison sentence. That's actually Ronnie Barker. Some fabulous episodes coming. So glad you're onto this Josh. It's a childhood fave of mine. Looking forward to more!
Glad you made it to Porridge mate, best British sitcom imo closely beating OFAH.
I'm so pleased your watching this.... its a great show.
Richard Beckinsale's 2 daughters Samantha and Kate have had top acting careers. Nobody is mentioning Sam.
Ronnie barker.was a highly underrated character actor
If you remember Fraggle Rock you may recognise a lighthouse keeper. And also Hollywood Actresses father of Kate Beckinsale.

Glad you liked it!
Ronnie Barker was a underrated actor You can watch him in this and not think of open all hours then watch that and not think of fletcher genius
It's weird but I was going to recommend in the comments to watch Porridge a couple of weeks ago....great minds 🤣🤣
I think this is actually the second episode. I've seen one set before this, where MacKay and Barrowclough escort Fletcher on a train and he tries to escape.
Yes there is, Dads Army
Great to see you watching this fantastic show one of my favourites. I also recommend a comedy called "My Family" that is also a great programme :)
Point of interest - Richard Beckinsale (Godbar) is the father of the actress Kate Beckinsale
he man playing "Godber" is kate beckinsale's father "richard"
Porridge is such a great show that no one has really picked up on.....till now. Ronnie Barker never disappoints.
