As soon as we finished this video, I realized that completely forgot to mention that Mikael Åkerfeldt sings backup and plays the 2nd guitar solo on this song. That’s my bad! Stick around for Judson’s beautiful piano rendition when the song ends. **If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse and they’re ready to get help, contact us via email.** thegreatmeasures@gmail.com

Amen. Impressive. Thanks for recommending giving it a listen. Quirky dude but a serious talent.
As I’m sure many have mentioned you have to do Anesthetize Live. Fantastic performance and will allow you to appreciate how well they play together.
Yes! Finally some porcupine tree! Please, don't quit it here, check out Anesthetize (live in tilburg version is the best). After checking this out I must say that I guessed Judson might like it. And the piano rendition is my favorite thia far. Great stuff again, guys!

Blackest Eyes and Trains are incredible songs and both off my favorite album of theirs, In Absentia.

The only thing I miss about the live version is that it doesn't have the guest solo from Alex Lifeson (Yes, the one from Rush) that's on the studio version.
Bro, Blackest eyes, the sound of muzak, wedding nails. Their old stuff is gold.
Anesthetize needs to be next for sure, yet I'm confident it will be among the top suggestions along with Trains.
Gavin Harrison (also producer on this album) is such a genius drummer. The Sound of Muzak is another good, more popular one (from the previous album) that shows off more of Harrison's skills.
Next should be Anethetize (live in Tilburg)
Superb piano version, simply superb.
Got to do Anaesthetize live in Tilburg now :)
The coolest thing about these videos is the friendship between these guys.
Wow, i’ve never heard of them, but I thoroughly enjoyed this! Love the guitartone. Slightly haunting vibe with a really great drive you just get caught up in. Hope you do lots more of Porcupine Tree. Not to make unsolicited comments about your appearances, but I dig the fresh cut! I was starting to miss Judson’s bowl cut à la Ringo circa ’67.

Happy to hear PT / Steven Wilson may have a new fan. :) Many PT songs are beautiful but with very dark lyrics. And how I love them. I became a fan during their (PT) downtime and man was I happy for the Closure/Continuation album and that I was able to see them live during that tour.

@@EiriUesugiKun Oh man, i’m all about this band now! I’m listening to the songs you mentioned in your other comment, they’re all great so far. I hope PT haven’t hung up their touring hats yet. I can see they came by and sold out my neck of the woods during that tour, so here’s hoping for a repeat🤞🏼
I think at this point it’s safe to say Steven Wilson is fairly well known. In my opinion, the most talented British performer that you haven’t heard of is Bruce Soord, main songwriter, singer, lyricist and guitar player for the band The Pineapple Thief. Gavin Harrison who plays drums for Porcupine Tree also plays for The Pineapple Thief. The Pineapple Thief has made 14 studio records, with the earlier offerings being a bit more experimental.

Thank you Judson for that amazing rendition! And yeah, as many have said, they are almost better live so from now on I would almost in every case suggest taking a live version over studio. Anesthetize, Trains, Hatesong, Blackest Eyes, Way out of here, Fear of a Blank Planet ... well. I'm not going to list their entire catalogue here. xD So many good songs, so many amazing live performances, so many good memories with this music.
Nailed it. It's more about always being alive in the present and not focusing on where your going
I love this song !!! awesome choice . I love your interpretation on piano , please post a video of your entire version of the song , you're a genius on piano . by the way i like the piano version of " sex and candy " lol
Sex and candy!!😂 YES!! MORE PT!!
First, i am late, second, i love that piano intro by Judson, third, i am just overall happy to see you listening to Porcupine Tree.

Yessss now Luminol!!! And awesome commentary I was not expecting such a nice sharing of ideas
I think we need a full cover of this song by Judson now 🤔
I’m from Syria and I watch every single video you make .. look how far you’ve reached .. keep it up guys!
Don't sleep on SW solo stuff, he has a penchant for attracting top talent. His solo stuff with Guthrie Govan, Adam Holtzman, Nick Beggs, and Marco Minnemman are exceptional compositions as well.
DAMYUM, see Judsons linking this song to the uncertainty theory of Heisenberg and some quantum physics after absolutely nailing the song on the piano was awesome!!! Love your reaction guys, keep going
what an effin' banger of a song. It's also a joy to play on the guitar. You guys are awesome!
Judson, your playing @ the end of the song was brilliant. I could've easily listened to you expanding on that.
Great content, as always! Porcupine Tree is one of my favorite bands. Steven Wilson is a brilliant composer, and Gavin Harrison is an amazing drummer. Check out the song Anesthetize Live from Tilburg. Amazing
Judson, you fricking blow my mind every frucking time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have been thinking recently what you'd make of this song and boom! Great minds Great Measures. You've got so many great albums to sink your teeth into now they've piqued your interest. Fear of a Blank Planet, Lightbulb Sun and Deadwing are probably my favourite in that order, and as others have mentioned, Anesthetize off the first I mention should definitely be Judson's next taste. Feels almost mean to keep the whole albums from him as I'm almost certain he'll love them all. Beautiful little piano rendition at the end from ol' ear hands, and a little bit of quantum physics and specific mention of Richard Feynman?! If I were a lady, I'd be changing panties right now.

First time hearing this, but the beginning definitely gives me pink floyd vibes. 10:56 I was not expecting that, I was enjoying the flow and then it got aggressive and I'm not complaining! I'm a huge Opeth and radiohead fan and it's almost like a mix between them two (with a sprinkle of pink ployd). Nice soft guitar mini solo towards the end, great feel. I'm really digging this. Also how cool was Judson's quick interpretation and playthrough.
I just cried listening to this piano version... Absolutely brilliant , thank you for that

Thanks for listening
So glad you guys discovered PT. The piano interpretations...love 'em! They are among my all time favorite bands. Welcome aboard!
Porcupine Tree is just pure talent! No need to fancy technicalities.
One of the best solos I have heard, especially the second solo that is played by Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth!
Steven Wilson - Drive Home with Guthrie Govan's solo of the ages is also a great one. I am once again asking for your support - I mean get him to listen to some Symphony X. :D Awakenings, or for an "easy listen" Paradise Lost (song). I'd say The Odyssey but that's a 24 minute song - It'd be well worth it as it is an amazing song, but I assume you'd prefer something shorter.
In 2008 I have the privilege of seeing these guys live and it was one heck of a show. Everyone has already said what you should check out next. It’s a little heavier than this. I’m just gonna go ahead and tell you that going in. But if you truly want a showcase of this band’s skills, definitely listen to anesthetize live. Also, another thing that I think I should mention it is a long song about 17 minutes, so you might want to have some popcorn on hand. What I heard it played live. I was infatuated by the end of it. I normally get up and dance to songs during live shows but with this one, I was absolutely glued to my seat, because of the amazing talent that was being displayed.
Great reaction guys, take the journey down the rabbit hole that is porcupine tree, you won’t be disappointed, as a few have already said, their live performances are fantastic.. look forward hearing more.. Side note, steven Wilson’s solo music is also fantastic .
It’s confirmed. Curiosity didn’t kill the cat. Judson did.

Sound of Muzak is perfect for this cat for production values for sure though

A little tidbit to this song. Mikael Ackerfeldt from Opeth plays the bluesy guitar solo after the fast part ends!

You can really tell, too, when you listen to a song like Hours of Wealth by Opeth. Which makes sense because the albums came out around the same time; Akerfeldt used a similar style, phrasing, etc. on both.
stumbled on here from going through a Metallica moment w/ Justice and your piece on "To Live is to Die". Great concept & interactions. And Judson's insights on the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics is hilarious juxtapose the melancholy nature of the music, lyrics. keep it up, you have a new subscriber and I've shared your channel with my friends
Should check out "Anesthetize" from their live album also called Anesthetize. I would watch the live video. An amazing performance and song.
Wow the ending was too good. Thanks for this. Loved the discussion. Did not expect a reference to Feynman but it oddly fits 😂
Gavin Harrison - 19 days, is the best. I used to play it for my son when he was in the womb and it would instantly stop him from crying when he was being fussy. Of course outside the womb You should go old school and play Autum Offering.... either Embrace the Gutter or Silence and Goodbye
Another option thats not Anesthetise (which is one of my favorite songs) is Watchmaker from Steven Wilsons solo project
What an amazing body of work these guys have to tap into. Hope that you do more. ‘Anesthetize’, ‘Hate Song’ or “the start of something beautiful’ would be good next steps - oh and LIVE is even better with PT if available.
Hell yes!!! Some PPT!!! Would love to see you guys to Anesthetize too. The vocal arrangement is something I think Judson would love.
U deserved my sub 👑
Another band right along these lines would be Riverside. I suggest the tracks Volte-Face or Parasomnia from the Reality Dream album. It would also be interesting to see Judson's response to The Mars Volta, maybe the track Tetragrammaton from the album Amputechture.
Cool song, I'm just now beginning my exploration of PT as well. Thumbs up here ! 👍
Your video came into my home feed due to the Porcupine Tree content, and I have instantly subscribed. Fantastic content, love the premise and discussions. I hope to see lots more porcupine tree content - I agree with Anesthetize, or as fans dubbed it when it premiered in concert prior to album release, "The Beast". Perhaps at a later date we could even hear some Dream Theater feedback. What a rabbit hole of potential that would unleash!

I was not expecting a discussion on quantum mechanics here...
I really liked this song and I'm a metalhead. I also play piano but I'm nowhere near Judson. He picked that up and just started playing. Good ear! 👍 I also find theoretical physics fascinating.
I love Porcupine Tree and this song is amazing. Thanks for react, guys! I recommend Anesthetize. 🤘
guys that was great! love the piano after too beautiful! I love porcupine tree! please check out dark matter or trains both live or studio versions are great!
Wilson did an offshoot type album with the guy from Opeth called Storm Corrosion, that surprised the shit out of me. I really love the last song on it.
You know what else Judson has been missing out on? Archspire! 😊
This album started as the soundtrack to a film project that didn't find a backer, so it was finished off as a standard rock record. Main songwriter Steven Wilson has/had a career fixation on death, ghosts, dead-end youth culture, etc., which this song and album (yes, released in 2005) slots into. Credit where credit is due -- that opening ambient thing was mainly Richard Barbieri, who isn't your typical 'twiddly synth' keys guy. He's much more into textures and sound color, more along the lines of Brian Eno rather than Jordan Rudess. And Judson hits on something important about P-Tree (and a lot of prog metal), in that there's usually not a lot of harmonic complexity or super tricky chords going on. It's often more about instrumental richness and depth. That might explain why P-Tree -- which was a Pink Floyd-sounding indie-psych group in their early days -- put so much work into that side of things when they moved into their prog-metal phase. BTW, the band name started as a joke between Steven Wilson and a buddy who were wanted to record some Syd Barrett-flavored psychedelic music. They thought it would be funny to adopt outrageous made up names, and the band name needed to be equally silly. As for where to go next, if you want to stick with the prog metal genre, the three albums to listen to are 'In Absentia', 'Deadwing', and 'Fear of a Blank Planet'. Their recent comeback album, 'Closure/Continuation', is also recommended, but those three albums are the core of that period.
Definitely keep the king Diamond coming ! Especially anything from the spiders lullaby or graveyard
great reaction lads,"check out "let's sleep together" live.it's just pure power
Hearing the reactor discuss quantum physics in a prog rock reaction video was not on my bingo board 😂
That was a nice ride. First time hearing. 🐉
There were a lot of steps leading up to it, but discovering this band back in '07 really sent me on the path to my favorite style of music. There's so many great songs to check out, like Anesthetize, The Start of Something Beautiful, and Hatesong, and there are so many bands in a similar vein with great music of their own, like The Pineapple Thief and Riverside. Keep on going!

Two porcupine tree songs that a Pianist would appreciate are Lazarus and Cheating the Polygraph
Steven Wilson is one of the best in the business at mixing and happens to be an amazing multi instrumentalist and composer. There is nothing he cannot do and the early Porcupine Tree records were just him. Check out his solo records, he explores many different genres and they are more progressive, especially "Hand Cannot Erase" and "The Raven That Refused To Sing".
I was hoping that you guys would do some PT at some point. I haven't watched through to the end yet, so I'm looking forward to Judson's opinion. You should have him listen to something from one of Steven Wilson's solo albums, like Luminol or Ancestral.
Great band!! 🤙👏👏👏👏
Just for a laugh, you should show Judson some of Gavin Harrison's big band rearrangements of some PT songs. Very cool!
Lads, top notch work again well done. Great video and scary talent on the keys by Mr J. I would suggest that the next time you stray into Steven Wilson territory , you could do a lot worse than to listen to "Drive Home" off his solo LP "The Raven that refused to sing"....I think most followers of this channel who know this song would agree that it is a stunning/mesmerizing song with one of the greatest guitar solos of all time, I.S.Y.N. (Thank you Mr G. Govan Esq) ...just a thought.
Great band, seen them live twice, they were incredible & had top-notch crystal clear live sound. Stupid Dream (1999) is a great starting point to begin going through their albums off channel. For a next reaction I recommend Hatesong, from their Arriving somewhere... Deadwing Tour concert (Filmed at the Park West, Chicago, USA, 11-12th October 2005).
Amazing band
oo porcupine tree
They go to the G. Yeah but that is exactly what is Wilsons sound. That chord change. It is beautiful, maybe because I expect it somewhere 😊
The Start of Something Beautiful is another great track on the Deadwing album. In Absentia is also a great album to explore. You really can't go wrong with anything from PT, other than perhaps their 1st album (but even on that album Radioactive Toy & Nine Cats are decent).
You guys need to dive into some more Porcupine Tree. Steven Wilson is a genius I was introduced to this band from my dad he checked out this album Deadwing from some library and played it in the car for us. Top songs for me on this album are Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Shallow, Lazarus, Halo, Open Car & Mellotron Scratch. Mikael from Opeth plays the guitar solo in this song. Steven has also produced some albums for Opeth in the 2000's. My all time favourite album from PT would probably be Fear Of A Blank Planet and a song you must react too from this album is Anesthetize such an epic track! \m/
In Absentia 🤯❤
Pretty sure I heard Wilson mention the song alluded to the transition between adolescence and adulthood: teenager thought becoming an adult would be like such-and-such, but became an adult and it was quite different. Then just played on that theme of “not what you expected”
Nice choice! One of my favorites songs. Next you guys could listen to Dream Theater, Space Dye Vest.
They have some incredible music. I'm partial to the album In Absentia, but they are all awesome.
Steve Wilson of porcupine tree is a musical genius
Finally!
I think Judson would really enjoy "Lazarus" by the same band
Also, you really need to watch their whole live in Teilburg set and witness their musical genius.
