    Just moved to Lansing from Tucson AZ for work as a welder. I’m used to hiking whenever I want, a 9k foot my range with 8k feet prominence none the less. It’s been very hard for me leaving the west’s hikes behind. Thanks for showing us that there’s definitely something here that we couldn’t see out west. Can’t wait to hike the up

    Thanks! I look for the same, especially the campsites. I use a hammock so I like to see the campsites to make sure there's good trees to hang from. The hike along big carp towards lake of the clouds is a long ascent, so I think it would've been much easier going the opposite direction.

    Looking to go on my first overnight backpacking adventure here this spring. I'm not sure how I feel about the reservation system though since I really have no idea how far I can hike in day. I'd prefer to hike until I tired and post up at the next campsite. Do you feel that reserving allows you to help plan better since you'll have a place to stay?

  • @UpNorthAdventures

    @UpNorthAdventures

    3 жыл бұрын

    I liked that we could reserve. Some of our group traveled quite a distance, so it was good knowing we definitely had a place waiting and not having to scramble to find a site. Or hike further only to find the next site full. We all had a good idea of the distance that we were comfortable with though. I would suggest doing some day hikes first to find your comfort range. Maybe even with the weight you plan to carry on your trip. Keep in mind your comfort range on flat land will decrease some on hilly terrain. Enjoy!

    If you plan the same loop as we did I would suggest reversing the direction. Map is here www.michigantrailmaps.com/product/porcupine-mountains-wilderness-state-park-trail-map/ Ticks and mosquitoes should taper off a bit by late August. Although the mosquitoes could still be bad in the low lying muddy areas. Don't underestimate Lake Superior. When the wind comes off the lake and can get quite cold. Thanks for watching hope you enjoy the trail as much as we did.
