I think it’s important to note that her style is very classic and of course her recommendations are geared to her style. I personally love my docs and the more little details, the better for me. So you just have to look at why she might feel these shoes look “industrial”. I think they give an edge that she doesn’t try to portray in her own looks.

Out in the ruggedness of the rest of America, these frilly shoes get eaten up quick. I’m gonna hang on to my boots.
Life hack: you can go over contrasting stitching on a shoe with a black permanent marker pen. I’ve done it on shoes, bags and a leather jacket and it works well if you’re careful x

Or you just have to polish them from time to time with same color shoe-polish. I've used to change the color of entire boots by using simple polish in desired color, if I couldn't get a pair in a shade I wanted - i.e.oxblood booties became dark brown after one application of brown shoe polish. Light stitching stands no chance against it. Polish polish, polish. ;)
@ninav1522

@@blueice011 That polish is waterproof? Or how do you take it off? Does it leave stains if I touch it? Thanks
@blueice011
7 күн бұрын
@@ninav1522 Hi! Well, it depends on various factors - type of leather and polish you use. Do you have experience with shoe polish? They usually come as cream polish that you need to live in for a while and then polish with a brush or cloth - or as more liquid instant polish with sponge applicator ant the top that you use in between two 'proper' polishes to refresh your shoes and to give them quick, instant polished look. Those polishes dry fast, are not very nourishing for the leather and don't need polishing once they set. Both will do the same job - they'll dye contrasting stitching. Now, if you want to change the color of the entire shoe, you can go only the same color value (lightness/darkness) of darker. For example, you can't shoe polish for light shoes to make dark shoes lighter. You can do what I did - change the shade of equal value (from oxblood to brown) or make shoes darker. Depending on type of leather or faux/vegan leather used, the effect might vary I presume. Mine were from genuine calf. Once you treat your shoes with darker polish they will become darker and darker each time you apply the polish until they become the shade of the polish itself (for example, if you have green, tan or brown shoes and you use black polish on them, eventually, depending on leather, they will become rather dark or even fully black. You can't go back, I'm afraid. Regarding staining, if you used shoe polish before, you know it might be sticky if you touch it before it's set or absorbed and polished. They can stain your fingers or clothes if you don't let it set/dry or absorb/polish - depending which type of polish you use. Most shoe polishes nourish or/and give shoes a polished look while offering slight protection from the elements. However, if you need waterproof effect, you might want to look for a shoe product that has such properties. They usually come in form of thick, greasy, neutral shade and do decent job making your shoes waterproof. Perhaps you might find waterproof polish where you live. If you can't find neither, just use thick layer of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) let it sit, take off the excess and you should be good to go. Best of luck! Edit: If you just need to cover/blend in contrasting stitching you can use a marker in the same shade.

Lydia Style Personality is clearly a ‘Classic’ - however this isn’t everyone’s style type; for those of us who suit more ‘Dramatic’ styles, the constant neutrals would be bland and boring … but on Lydia they look timeless and elegant. You can have brighter & bolder colour & styles which are not cheap and tacky!

Totally agree! Bright & bold, “dramatic”( I will never (🤘🏼😜) stop weaving a touch or two of “punk”into my outfits, even on my most “classic/elegant/timeless attire” days😉), is not only great fun, but if done right, it can look both “expensive” and elegant (as opposed to “cheap and tacky”😉). But I do feel that getting the wrong “hue” for your skin tone - especially with bright colours, as well as “settling” for certain types of reeeally synthetic fabric, that are often used for bright & bold clothes, can quickly take things from “dramatic” to “decidedly dodgy”. It’s not easy getting it “right”, especially when shopping online or in shops with bad lighting😏.

That's something that I find about her video. The practicallity. Don't get me wrong, I like her videos and tips, and they actually help me tremendously to build my capsule wardrobe. However, her shoes recommendation is always a miss for me since we have different lifestyles and climates. I love my ballet flats and heels, but at the end of the day I will always opt for my trainers because they are more comfortable to wear 3 - 4 hours of walking and constantly have to move. And it will not ruin our feet. The examples on this video are not meant to wear when you have to rush to catch the earliest commute and stand all day in your workplace. I just wish that she incorporates it more and take it into consideration of her styling because someone in my job would also like to look stylish without missing the practicality. I hope you can understand what I mean since English is not my first language.

@kaphy - I so agree! When Uggs were in style, the Toronto salty slush destroyed them & when Hunter (rubber) boots were in style, they were slippery and my feet were always freezing. Meanwhile, my docs have been workhorses. Practicality trumps fashion sometimes, eh?
I absolutely loved the format of this video! For us who's working on building our wardrobe staples, its so easy to not really notice those details and end up not happy with our buy. And for me, as someone who moved from a country with hot weather to a country with cold weather, those deeper inputs are really new and being all learned now. Thank you so much!
This sounds like your personal opinion not “fashion” guidelines
Love the video but I have to disagree with the Docs. They’re timeless and always cool.
Love a platform, edgy look. As you get older , looking typical to me ages you. Karen Britchick wears lots of chunky shoes and has for years, they look great on us taller ladies. Platforms as also good if you don’t want to wear heels ( perfect for those longer flare pants)

I bought a pair of combat boots with laces and zips. I did it because I was tired of coming home and struggling to get my boots off. Getting them on wasn’t a walk in the park either. The leather is gorgeous too. (They cost an arm and a leg at net-a-Porter.) They style up with just about anything. On AND off in seconds, and so edgy. I’m not giving these up. I can see the attraction to a minimalist plain pair of Chelsea boots, but I’d get a classic style in brown. Other than that I love your videos Lydia. You’re really helping me with a number of style conundrums and this one has been helpful too.

I’ve been watching deconstructing videos of famous makers. A better boot without the yellow stitching can be had for less money. You’re paying for the name…these are not your mother’s Doc Martins…which she probably still has from the 80s. I have a pair of Timberlands that I’ve had since the late 80s and the soles are flat but the upper is still great…still waterproof. The newer ones mostly made in China just don’t compare. This is true of Docs as well. Even the Made in England variety don’t compare.
Thank you, Lydia. This kind of video is extremely informative to me. Sometimes when I am cleaning out my closet, I ask myself "Why did I purchase this?" It is so helpful to know what a quality is basic, so that you don't go out and waste your money on so many trends that you might not have thought was a trend at the time. Even some of the embellishments I am guilty of purchasing. I think I have a pair of dress shoes with a Diamonte square buckle on it, thank God they are black, and it is a more subtle dark stone on the toe. I like good quality clothing and am so over trend clothing. I feel better in neutrals and basics. But as I get older, I am interested in keeping modern (not younger) but it is so hard to know modern from trendy.
What makes your loafers so cool is the overall design of the vamp. Little details are what makes them so special. 👍🏼

Unfortunately if you are a size 42.5 or 43 you just don't have the luxury of choosing something that you like. You just have to put up with whatever you can find that fits you. Unfortunately more and more shops seem to have made the decision lately to only stock up to size 41. I love those Other Stories slingbacks, especially as they have a low heel. Unfortunately they only go up to size 41, despite OS stocking other styles in a 42. And as they are a pointed toe I'd probably need a 43. I'm so jealous of people that are able to buy shoes based on what they like! Luckily trainers are fashionable at the moment so I can live in mens trainers.
I loved this video! 💕 Great criteria to evaluate or build a fall shoe wardrobe. The elegance and timelessness of simplicity was right on point. I would love to see a video on blazers in the same format. Thank you!

Interesting ideas. My younger son bought me a pair of Docs for Christmas two years ago after I said I liked his (not platform soles). They have been perfect for the rainy west coast winters here in Canada. Four years ago my older son bought me black leather Van loafers, again great for our rainy fall and winter. In the spring and summer I wear a pink or black ballet flat with criss cross ankle detailing (I have skinny ankles). I don’t like heels of any kind so the ankle detail is nice. It all comes down to what works for your feet…and your climate 😊
SO SO HELFUL! Thank you very much for coming up with this great idea and please keep going with with format🙏🏻

So happy to see Mango penny loafers were included in your 'good' list. I've been wearing those like almost every second day since the end of the summer, keep getting a ton of compliments. Even a few people thought they were legit Le Loafer Penny by Saint Laurent.. I'm not complaining about that at all 😉
I really enjoy your content. Thank you so much for all your hard work!
I clocked on this video bc I value your advice and I was happy to see this type of video on your channel.
… I DO BELIEVE that a nice updated classic Oxford will be making the scenes as well … 👍🏻
Hi Lydia, this format is great - very useful. Please do a series.
