What I remember are all these many many many cases of child abuse and sexual abuse inside the catholic church of my country which will never be cleared because the perpetrators get protected. I also remember all the questionable facts about the money flows of the catholic church that never got cleared (I have very specific cases and cities in mind). Always excuses. We have a free choice of religion and I support that. Because that gives me the option to say no.

@@joexavier2287 Wrong accusations are bad of course but is this not a proof that in this case the system worked as it´s supposed to? A fair process is what we would love to see as well. Over all the past decades there were probably hundreds of cases. But for as long as the church can insist on internal investigations only, the solution rate will stay anywhere near zero, I suppose and I never really understood why in a country with a secular system and society the church is able to stand above the law.

i would add that his doctrinal concerns regarding the existence of Truth in a post-truth world are of incomparable import. That there are many 'truths' (i.e. opinions, interpretations) is the condition of relativity that does not exist in the Divine, where Truth is One and all is One. But the media latches onto what happened at the time in regards to scandals of all time, which have nothing to do with his legacy.

I remember disliking Pope Benedict as a younger man but, as I get older, I am starting to see him in a new light. Almost as though I am seeing him as a person instead of as some strange boogeyman. I don't claim to know everything (unlike some Internet comments) but I am seeing the relevance of Benedict in our modern world. The media will want the world to remember Benedict as the man who presided over child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church. I think Benedict would want us Catholics to remember him through his writings and teachings. My guess is that, over time, non-Catholics will remember him as the former, and Catholics will remember him as a possible modern Doctor of the Church.

Agreed. This was because he and John Paul 2 participated in the Second VaticanCouncil. They say things from the inside. And how some things had gone too far.hence both were determined to hold on to orthodoxy. Furthermore they were from Germany and Poland. And both countries were orthodox in the years before and after WW2. JP2 pontificat didnt achieve much in the first few years.but once he brought Cardinal Ratinger to Rome as his right hand man in 1981, since then the pontificate became remarkable.

I am in the peculiar position of once nearly getting arrested for attacking Benedict XVI. I was at the Midnight Mass in the Vatican on Christmas Eve 2009 where, you will remember, an insane woman attacked Benedict XVI in the Basilica. I was sitting in one of the side chapels and did not see what was happening; all we could hear was a loud roar, which I thought at the time was more appropriate to greeting a rock star than the Pope. Well, the Mass was interesting, but I had a bad back at the time, and after a while I decided that I had to leave, still ignorant of what had just happened. When I tried to go, I was questioned by some very antsy guards, who seemed paranoid and really reluctant to let me leave. Finally they found a doctor somewhere who asked me some questions in very slow English. When he pronounced me to be telling the truth, the guards let me go. It was only when we got back to our hotel that I realised what had happened. This was the same trip where I encountered Mariah Carey, and talked to a real live Mafia don in Sicily. Memorable time. RIP Benedict XVI.

There's lots of info online about Ratzinger when he was younger. He's brother Georg talked openly in the past about their childhood and so did Ratzinger. He's past is truly fascinating I think.

Actually, if one really knows the history of Cardinal Ratzinger, one knows that he probably did more than any other elite within the Church to combat the sexual abuse scandal, prior to his pontificate. As for his time as Pope, they were a scant 6 years, a time during which the scandal had grown to such proportions that any man in that office would have been seen as inadequate to the task, let alone an ailing man in his 80s.

Regardless what people thought of him, whether you're religious or not, Joseph Ratzinger was most of all a German Citizen. And he loved his country. So my condolences to the German people who've lost a fellow citizen and one who also happened to be the Pope.

@@katarn999 to the rest of the world he was German. That's what we knew him as and he was happy to be referred to as German. The ins and outs of Germany isn't of importance to the rest of the world. This is someone we knew as being German. That's it.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم و السلام عليكم ورحمة الله تعالى وبركاته. قال عيسى عليه و على نبينا و رسولنا الصلاة والسلام من الله والملائكة: الباء بهاء الله، و السين سناء الله، الله لا إلاه إلا هو، الرحمن رحمان الدنيا، الرحيم رحيم الآخرة. أما بعد: بهاء الله في العبد لا يضيع إلا بضياع الهبات، و سناء الله في العبد لا يضيع إلا باقتراف السيئات، و توحيد الله في العبد لا يضيع إلا بغلبة هوى الموجودات على حب خالق و مبدع الوجود و الموجودات، و رحمة الله في الدنيا للعباد لا تضيع إلا بفساد عقل الحكماء، و رحمة الله في الآخرة لا تضيع إلا بالاستجابة لدعوة الشيطان الرجيم. ولما كان أنه عند الله عيسى هو كلمة الله و روح منه، و أيده بروح القدس جبرائيل عليه منا كامل السلام، وأنه عيسى قال عن نفسه أنه خبز الحياة، فإن ماء خبزه كان معناه علمه وحياته، و كانت خميرته هي عنوانه في البركة و الرحمة، وكان طحينة حبات زرعه هي مكارم أخلاقه في أهله، و كان ملحه هو صفة عشقه في الأبدان حتى صار دواء النوايا و الأقوال و الأعمال و الأفعال، و كانت عجينته هي يقين الحزم و العزيمة تحملها الأسماء و الصفات، و كان خبزه المطهي دليل الفهم و العقل بالقلب الناضج، و خبزه الطيب هو صفاء الروح و النفس، و خبزه الطري هو شفاء اللسان، و خبزه الطاهر هو صحة الباطن و الأبدان. و إنه عيسى روح الله إذا غاب حبه في قلوب محبيه، غابت نور شمسه عنهم، و إذا غابت مشوراته و دعواته، انعقدت المبشرات و سلك الغافلون الوجهاء مسلك الحكماء والعلماء. الحق و الحق أقول لكم، كانت خمس كلمات من كلماته تحمل وصاياه من يقين الحق في اليوم اثنى عشر ساعة من ساعات الليل والنهار، زوجين في الزمن لا يفترقان، لا ينبغي لليل أن يسبق النهار، كيف؟ هل رأى منا أحد نحن البشر من بني آدم أن حواء سبقت آدم في الخلق، هل رأى منا أحد نحن البشر من بني آدم أن الظلمة و النور كانا يوما عنصرا لمعدن واحد في البشر، الخير يظهر وحيدا، و الشر كذلك وحيدا. أليس من طبع العناصر في الوجود إذا توافقت في تكاملها تنافرت، كذلك البشر من بني آدم في الوجود إذا توافقا في تكاملهما انفصلا. أليس طلاق الزوجين سببه توافق الزوجين في تكامل غريزة غضبهما فقط، و نحن نعلم أن أبغض الحلال عند الله الطلاق، فكيف إذا توافق تكامل الغرائز كلها في بني البشر، أليس معناه أن الله سيعذبنا بما فعله السفهاء منا، و أننا ستريم بأعمال أيدينا نهايتها على المعصية و خراب الديار. قيل لعيسى (عليه السلام ): من أدبك؟ قال: ما أدبني أحد، رأيت قبح الجهل فجانبته.... و روي أن عيسى (عليه السلام ) مر مع الحواريين على جيفة كلب فقال الحواريون: ما أنتن ريح هذا الكلب! فقال عيسى (عليه السلام ): ما أشد بياض أسنانه!. إن هذا الحديث لا يدل على أن عيسى يحكم بالغرائز، أو تحركه الغرائز، و لكنه يبحث في اليقين، عند صور الإعجاز، في صحة القلب والروح والعقل و البدن و الحواس و ظواهر الموجودات بقوة اليقين و العلم، و في حاجات المؤمن في ساعات الليل والنهار إلى ربه الذي خلق عيسى، لأنه الفاعل سبحانه و هو الذي يحكم في ملكه بما يشاء، و وقتما شاء، لأنه سبحانه يعلم ما هو من حق عيسى أن يظهره للناس من الأسرار، حتى يستطيع الناس توحيد الله خالق عيسى في ربوبيته، و حتى يستطيع الناس توحيد الله خالق عيسى فيما يمارسونه من العبادات و الأفعال، و قوة تأثيرها في تغير العالم نحو الأفضل، لأنها جميعا بأمر الله، و لو كان هذا العمل والفعل أدناه أكل لقمة الخبز الجاف في فم الضعفاء من بني الإنسان، الذين لا يقدرون على شيء أمر الله في هذه الحياة. انتهى
