I should be finished with this little project in about five years LOL.

Shirl B, if you don't have a sander hooked up to a vacuum capable of handling drywall dust, yes it would be a dust storm from hell. Sorry that didn't work out. In this video mine is hooked up to a high quality vacuum. But if you don't want to do all that, have you tried just scraping it like in this video? Or, do it the way I most often do it which is with water. I have a video explaining that at: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5-lpcxpp6ngp7g.html Let me know if that helps, or if I can help you in any other way. Thanks, Guy

  • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY

    @ThatKiltedGuyDIY

    5 жыл бұрын

Good, don't give up, you'll get it. A few more pointers. If your sander is variable speed, sometimes slowing it down helps as it can sand so fast that the vacuum can't get it all sucked down the hose fast enough. And you have to keep a firm pressure against the ceiling or it will just shoot it everywhere. Also, the sander needs to have a drywall rated filter or bag or the dust will go right through it. But if you give up on the sander, the wet method is so much easier for most. Anyway, thanks again, Guy.

I've been removing Acustic from cealings for many years done it many different ways. Well when it's time to do my own cealing it's like it's welded to the cealing. I wet it many many time still stuck like chuck. Very slow process that's driving me crazy. My house was built in 1946 and they started doing acoustic cealings back in early 70's it must have layers of paint. 12x30 cealing going to take around 3 days of hard labor. 😪

Have you tried a multitool with a scraper blade against painted popcorn? I bought one of the stiff scraper blades two weeks ago bc a guy had put mud out over tape seams and apparently didnt know you're supposed to spread mud make it wider each coat. He just stacked his mud up in about a 5 inch wide belt around the room and it costs us a lot of time. We dont own a lot of drywall tools but found that the multitool scraper was quickest way to bring the thickness down to where it could be sanded. Just wondering if you had ever tried it on painted popcorn and did it work?

The mud was the thickness of 2 slices of cheese in some spots it was a few coats all applied with a 4 inch knife. I was wondering how he got so much done so quick and the answer was he wasnt spreading his mud at all, just stacking it

Hello! We recently purchased our first home and it has popcorn everywhere, walls and ceilings 😩. My husband and I are trying to removed it all by ourselves but the house has latex paint and so water doesn’t really help. I was exited to see this video until you mentioned that if painted maybe this is not the best method. So, does this mean our only option is to do it by hand/dry? We don’t want to re-walk if we do t have to. Thank you 😊

Hello Mariana Ames, here's my quick quide to removing popcorn ceilings using the wet method. First, test the procedure below on a small area to determine if it will really scrape. If it doesn't after doing the things below, you will need to repair the attempt, or proceed to other alternatives. You can view those in my video at- kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWh1k6imZK6Znag.html My current primary video, showing all the steps to remove popcorn ceilings is at: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5-lpcxpp6ngp7g.html 1- Spray the surface using VERY hot water, with a little bit of soap in it. I prefer Krud Kutter (Link in the description) as it seems to soften dried paint better, but most any soap will work. I've experimented with most suggested things like vinegar (very smelly), to fabric softener, etc, and they all seemed to work the same. You want to attempt to saturate it to the point where the water is starting to drip. You don't want it raining, but soaked as well as you can. I prefer a pump style garden sprayer, or my home made sprayer that uses a 12v weed sprayer pump and 20' hose. 2- Let it soak until it looks like it has soaked in all it will. This can vary from a few minutes to 20 minutes or so for painted popcorn. 3- Test scrape it to see if it scrapes easily. If 95% of the entire popcorn texture and base mud doesn't scrape off easily, soak again. Or if you see that the actual drywall is barely wet after scraping, soak it again. 4- repeat the process above until it scrapes easily. This can vary from one coat of water, (rare as it usually takes 2 coats for me), to up to 5 coats of water. 5- Let everything dry overnight. Opening up windows in the summer and putting fans in the room help a lot as you have a ton of moisture to get rid of. Note that cleaning up all the droppings is MUCH easier if you dry it out as it will weight a ton when wet and you can barely fill a trash can with a construction type bag, about 1/4 full. When dry you can double that. 6- Once dry, sand the entire surface to get rid of the final base coat that didn't scrape off. To understand this, watch this video- kzread.info/dash/bejne/hWyjz7pyqb3TZso.html 7- Repair any defects found after scraping and sanding. 8- Finish for a smooth finish if desired, or do a texture. HERE'S MORE VIDEOS TO HELP- *- For a smooth finish, watch this video- kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zohq2pmwmbOTkaQ.html *- To apply a texture, watch one or more of the videos in this playlist- kzread.info/head/PLCrazHylAOEk4mixQ2IHezYSvJtlu7kVD *- To understand how to repair minor defects, watch this video- kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaeHqtBuYbq_qNY.html *- To learn how to mix a crack on the ceiling, check out this video- kzread.info/dash/bejne/aI59uLSYlrCseqw.html *- To learn how to skim coat a ceiling, after the above steps, watch this video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/qZulxLOLesbAaMY.html *- To learn how to skim coat over the popcorn ceiling to get rid of it, watch this- kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqGJq9ChpdnIe9Y.html Mariana Ames, if I helped you save money on your project, or you just want to show your appreciation for my help, please consider joining our KZread membership for as low as $2.00 a month. Sometimes I have to soak it up to four or five times waiting 15 or 20 minutes between each soaking before it softens up enough. If you try that, don’t be afraid of over wetting it as it will just drip onto the floor if you do.

What kind of time are we looking at for removing popcorn ceilings? I just bought a 1600 sq. ft condo and want to redo the ceilings before moving in. Any advice would help. I’m pretty handy/capable and have some help, but will be mostly on my own for the bulk. Have a few weeks to do what I can.

How can you get it off when it’s painted? I watch your last one and did exactly what you did. Sprayed with warm water then scraped. Still ruff coming off

Awesome video!! IF you are able to sand all of the popcorn ceiling, are you now able to put primer on there before painting the ceiling? Thanks

Honestly Popcorn ceiling removal is a complicated process that really shouldn’t be explained in simple 10 minute videos because you need to understand safety and all the many ways of removing it and then the process that’s required after removing it that goes beyond just Painting. That’s why I will be putting out a drywall Popcorn ceiling removal class in my new Drywall Academy at www.DrywallAcademy.com

I dont know but I dropped to a 36 grit and it eats the paint off. I found if its painted with semi gloss its a pain no matter what

I used 24 grit in the video but if it’s painted I find it much easier to remove with water. Thanks for commenting

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY , do you have a video showing how to use water to remove painted texture? I'm trying to remove texture that is very pointy and 0.25 - 0.5" tall. I was thinking I could sand it to get rid of the peaks, then spray it, and then try to scrape it. I did a test run with no luck, so I'm hoping you have other ideas.

Man I don’t know what you’re talking about dude I use 60 grit & it works on painted popcorn. I’ve even sanded down painted texture... just needs elbow grease

If your building is built in 1983, does it have asbestos??

  • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY

It was banned in about 1973 so it should not.

1989 was the ban so yes you should be testing anything prior to 1990 personally I test to early 90s as they were allowed to hoard the materials and use them up. The test is cheap lungs are not

Actually that’s not quite right. Here’s the information from the mesothelioma website. What you’re referring to is a different ban but not the one regarding popcorn ceilings. “The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned hazardous pollutants from ceiling coverings in 1973 with the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP). However, researchers note popcorn ceiling materials may have still contained asbestos after the ban. Existing inventories of asbestos products were exempt from the ban and workers may have continued to use them. Some reports indicate asbestos may have been present in popcorn ceiling material stockpiles as late as the 1990s.” From: www.mesothelioma.com/asbestos-exposure/products/asbestos-popcorn-ceilings/ So it would be extremely rare to find it after 1980 but it is possible

@@stich1960 I asked the management if it had asbestos and they said no. Don’t know if I should take their word or get it tested

If you’re not planning on disturbing it like removing it, it’s safe. If you’re thinking of removing it, a test would be wise and they only run about $50 if you do it yourself. Go to the hardware store and ask for an asbestos test kit
