POOR THINGS | “Dancing Scene” Clip | Searchlight Pictures

Ойын-сауық

Now playing in select theaters. Everywhere December 22.
From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
Cast: Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, Margaret Qualley

    I just love Yorgos Lanthimos' unique and special approach to find beauty in weirdness. Here's a character who's not trying to attract attention by dancing, she's just being herself.

    It really does seem like a move one would do on-the-fly to get with the jarring music their naive lover is so into, but still being uncomfortable about how assertive her dance moves are. Love this movie for a lot of reasons but the actors’ small details to their parts really sells it. Always knew Ruffalo was a talent though.

    The dinner scene was the pivotal moment in the movie! Her discovering dance for the first time and REALLY letting herself be FREE (dance like no one is watching) - and Mark's character still trying to 'control' her by forcing her to do a more formal dance - and she constantly broke away from himto do what SHE felt....such a foreshadowing moment! This movie is BRILLIANT!

  • @AbsentWithoutLeaving

    @AbsentWithoutLeaving

    3 ай бұрын

    Yesssss! I love the way that every time he tries to force her into the accepted formal style of the dance, she flips it on him and pulls him into HER version. Every move, every time. He never had a chance. It was genius, especially the way it interrupted a severe lecture from him about the way their affair was supposed to have progressed. It was the whole theme of the movie, summed up in less than two minutes. Actually, it could be condensed even further, into those few seconds when he tried to force her into the standard waltz position in which the male leads and the female goes where she's told, and she spun it into a stranglehold on HIM and steered him where she wanted him to go. Yorgos gets more out of a dance scene than any other director I can think of!

    I didn’t take it that he was embarrassed but that’s an interesting interpretation. The couple who asks Bella to hang out with them afterwards and the old man winking at her shows that people seemed to like her dancing. Nothing to be embarrassed by. I think Mark Ruffalo’s character just didn’t want her having all of the attention or wanted to be a part of it at least.

And it is in the death of one's ego that the true personality of an individual is revealed. Revealed as a gift for the rest of humanity to observe and thus providing them the impetus to do likewise as mark ruffalo does so in following bella's lead. Wonderful scene!
