Poor Man Power Steering - Lawn Mower Garden Tractor - John Deere MTD Husqvarna Craftsman Cub Cadet

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here is an easy way to do a HOW TO Poor Man's Power Steering for your Riding Lawn Mower or Garden Tractor. This project didn't take long at all, but in the end it's all worth it and works awesome.
I did it with basic tools and if your "Shafts" column is clean, it's under 15 minutes at most. Just be careful after though, because it works a little differently and if people are not used to it, they can fall off on sharp turns.
Hole = 20MM = 3/4" (ID)
Outside Dia = 35MM = 1.37" (OD)
Thickness = 2MM = .07"

    I just put these on and hopefully they will last a long time. I did run into a problem. I have a Craftsman mower. I could not replace the one thick washer that I took off when disassembling because there was not enough room to put on the E-clip after I put it all back together. You have to remember that the bearings and the two washers that come with it take up room. It was about the same thickness as that washer I removed. Therefore, not enough room to get the E-Clip snapped on. Otherwise, seems pretty decent so far!! Thanks for a great video!!

  • @JodBronson

    @JodBronson

    2 жыл бұрын

    Someone had the same problem due to manufacture. You have to grind down the top a bit so the washers have enough room. Take a flat file, and file the TOP part of the shaft. From there, you will be good. NOTE: Read another comment from here, he had to do the same thing.

    @@JodBronson Thanks for your response, Jordan. That's a good idea. Let me ask you, though. Do you think it's important to put that washer back on? Or by me leaving it off, will it cause an issue in the future? I hate to take all that off again and file the shaft to make that washer fit. But I'll do it if you think it's necessary. Thanks again, Jordan!

    @@garyp9906 - If the E-Clip fits then it should be fine. On the other hand, if you hit a big bump, it may affect the E-Clip. If I were you, I will take my time out and file it, it doesn't take long at all. The manufacturer bought some knock-off stuff, that is why it's like that. This video was fine, but I did another John Deere I had to file it and that is how I knew what the manufacturer did. *NOTE:* You do not have to take everything apart.... Just raise enough to file and put the Washer + E-Clip back.

    @@JodBronson Thanks again, Jordan. Yeah, you're right. It probably would stay put, but over time from hitting bumps it probably would make that E-clip pop off. I might as well do it right if I've gone this far. I'll just pop off the E-Clip and washer and do it the right way. I guess I was looking for an easy way out. Thanks again for responding and I'll let you know how it works out!!

    @@garyp9906 - You are welcome! Make sure to grease it after and let it ooze out. Do not clean the extra oozing grease, and by doing that you are protecting dirt from entering those washers which will prolong usage. Next time to grease, clean off the old grease ooze, and then grease it until you see oozing again. You will understand this concept on your next greasing schedule.

    If your tractor doesn't have the grease nipple, you can drill and tap a hole and install a grease fitting from the hardware store. Cast iron is easy to drill and tap. Just make sure to clean the hole out well and blast it with compressed air before screwing in the nipple. On a side note: A couple major manufacturers have eliminated the grease fittings on their weed wacker heads as well, so you can't grease them. You can drill and tap the aluminum housing for a zirc fitting on those too, but you're going to want to drill a tiny weep hole so excess grease can find a way out.

    Soooooooo, whats the idea of putting the grease in the top of the cap? Its not against anything that it could lubricate and there's no way for it to get into the shaft. The washer bearings on the bottom however is a great idea to cut down on friction. I'm wanting to put a larger steering wheel on mine, maybe at least a 16 inch. I think the stock 13 inch john deere uses is just too small and hard to turn.

    Thanks for this video; how long do these bearings last before they need to be replaced? I'm asking as I assume sand and grit will get into the bearings during normal use and will erode the bearings over time.

  • @JodBronson

    @JodBronson

    2 жыл бұрын

    The one in the videos is still on there and it's the 2nd season. Surprisingly, I thought it would be we would have to replace it every season, but it's still good so far. I guess depends on your usage. We do these on a 2-acre lot, and we use it lots. We even use it for leaf transport in fall too, that is even more than mowing. *NOTE:* During each season, you would add grease to it. This will push out the old grease and the new grease will replace its place. Also, grease it extra and let it ooze out, that would be the protection for sand and dirt until your next grease job.

    My 1999 JD Sabre 1542 is welded so you would have to cut them off. My main concern is the steering has become very hard to steer. I can't seem to find very much info on this particular tractor. My guess is the problem is in the gear - buried under the gas tank. Time to start tearing it down, I just hope I still can get parts for it.
