Synopsis:
In Europe, 119 million people live in or with the risk of poverty and social exclusion. The reality of poor children, unemployed young adults, and working poor spread around the Union. In 2010 the "European Economic and Social Committee" launched "Europe 2020" - an agenda to heave 20 million people out of poverty by 2020. A journey through Italy, Portugal and Ireland investigating the causes of poverty, while challenging politicians and economic experts on the subject. Can Europe's fight against poverty be successful? In Europe you're considered poor if you have less than 60% of the average national income to live. That's 119 million people. Is there a European Master plan to change their lives for better - or have they simply been left behind? Do we have to accept the structural phenomenon of unemployed young people, poor children and the new working poor? What is the prize Europe will ultimately have to pay? Some of the main reasons for poverty are Europe's increasingly precarious working conditions. Relentless competition, new technologies and the transformation of the service industry are some of the reasons for this development. It is not only that minimum wages are being lowered, but layoffs are made much easier, which contributes to this social decline.

"Reduce the number of poor people by 20 million." 😬 Am I the only one who got sinister undertones from that (death) sentence?

Europe does not speak or accept English neither they do not have enough English schools for their people, thus international business n investments don’t come
This happens if you spent money on wars.
There are apprenticeships in Italy. Sadly, internships pay next to nothing and many jobs pay a pittance. The lady and family featured cannot really be defined as middle class. TV addiction, chip scoffing… She works for the state and suggests early retirement should be a reality - typical of state employees! A heavy and inefficient state sector drains money away from the private sector! Mafia and corruption have much to do with life in the south particularly. Beginning with the state. In the north the economy is strong, this documentary isn’t accurate.

Poverty is raising
Pension age up. Old people must work states pretend to be poor but they just splash money to military purposes while you cannot afford food.
The best gift you can give to your kids is for them to experience poverty.
20 years ago: poor when you lost a job 10 years ago: poor when you dont have bachelor now: poor when you work for an employer. 10 years later: when you dont work for China company.

Welcome to the poverty line
What about May 2024?😮
Yes, there are a few million very poor people in Europe - 85% of them live in countries that have been under the Soviet Union - so it will still take a few years to give them Western standards. Russia also has 40% below the UN's goal of what poverty is - thanks to a huge state and corruption, as it is also in the countries that have escaped the Soviet Union or Russia's sick form of government.

When you consider it relatively to non-european countries, yes Europeans are rich. I know a country where 60% of the population work with national minimum wage. In European countries that ratio is maybe 5-10%
