Pond Update - I’m Feeling Optimistic

Ойын-сауық

Today we give you the September 2023 update on the pond after we had issues with it leaking. It has been 2 months since we hauled in 53 loads of clay to line the bottom and this is where the water level is today

I hear you make a mistake a lot of people make. Going from 4" to 8" pipe does not double the capacity of the pipe, it quadruples it. So you would have to bury 4 4" pipes to equal the capacity of 1 8" pipe. In short I would just replace the 4"pipe with an 8" pipe, or, if you have the room, leave the current 4" and add an 8" (giving you 4 times the capacity.

In most drainage design, 12” pipe is a minimum size. You are collecting a lot of water. Might want to consider going really big, or go home.

Also the surface friction on the walls of the pipe are much less important. Why did you make the sides so steep? Hard to maintain, subject to erosion, etc. Put cobbles and then gravel over the eroded areas.

Hi Adam,as a professional fire fighter in Canada, and have experienced numerous rural fires , you have a great resource for firefighting and that is your pond. I don’t know where the closest fire hydrant is to your home is but if you made a pad near the pond for drafting water from or even pump from that would save a lot of time or even save your house. I would get your local fire department to give their opinion. Great show!!! Dale Ontario Canada

** Adam, in addition to your French drain system, you need a two prong approach to water management. In the area where you mentioned that surface water pools and runs over the French drain and then overtops the pond, washing away your new clay, you need to add a surface water grate to collect water that is unable to seep down into the French drain. Use an in-line grate on the existing drain pipe and/or a separate surface drain with its own pipe to the pond. Surround the grate drain with a small berm to direct the surface water into the drain and prevent running directly into the pond. Hope this helps!

Hey Adam, just a suggestion from a nobody. You may want to explore the possibility of going further up into the woods and maybe using a water bar type of solution in several different spots to redirect the water across the hillside and away from your backyard. No matter how big of a pipe you put in the ground if you fill it up to its maximum capacity the Additional runoff will skip right over the top of it and continue down the banks of your pond. From the looks of your property in the background, it looks like it is all uphill behind your house again my suggestion would be to go up in the woods and take a good hard look at the path of the water and try to redirect it. You’re never going to stop it. I know you’ve been told that before.🙂👍

If you are going to update the french drain, you might want a way to divert the flow away from the pond for when the pond is full. Unless you think ur stand pipe can handle an 8 inch inflow during a huge water event (think hurricane rains). Having the option to divert those waters away in extreme rains might save you a couple headaches in the future.

Great video - love your channel and your work. AND: - Can you create a berm at the end of the perc. pipe? A large (18X18) drain with a domed cover. And hook it to your new add’l 4” or 8” line. - Did your wrap your perc pipe with filter fabric to keep the fines from clogging the pipe? - Habe you calc’d the standpipe for capacity in the event of a major rain event? I’m no expert, but it looks a little small to me. It’s now or never (since you’re bringing more clay anyways) to upsize it if necessary. Again, I love your projects. You showed the puddles accumulated after the "backup" on the Drain. Your problem may also be your "solution". My French Drain also accumulated sand/dirt. But, I had a 2500 gal cistern up the hill. It allowed a brief time for some dirt/sand to settle. Much less "stuff" reached the house for my water system. After you increase the diameter of your downward slope of the French Drain you can use your imagination to construct an above-ground "cistern" to capture the heavier sediment with an overflow into the pond. The water will be pre-filter (to an extent). I "see" (to start with) using railroad ties 8' x 8' x (downhill slope side). You can easily go to two ties high??? It will soon be a sandbox to play in?

In my experience with french drains and similar concepts on my property I would try and keep the water on the surface as much as possible. French drains clog up. Perhaps put in concrete catch basin where the water comes out of the perforated pipe the transition to at least 12" plastic culvert pipe until you get the water to daylight at minimal slope. The rest of the way use landscape fabric and rock to prevent erosion all the way into the pond.

Instead of digging up all of that pipe (which I honestly don't think will solve your problem), I would put some riprap where that watershed hits the pond. If the water is bubbling up it could be that it's not getting into the pipe fast enough (not enough weeping holes), not that it's filling the pipe. If that's the case then you are going to bubble up anyways, even with an 8" pipe.

10 to 12 inch pipe. I think you have more than an 8 inch pipe can handle at "hide" tide

Are you planning on stocking the pond with some fish?

I'm just wondering that it looks like a lot of rocks or slabs of shale or something above the high water mark in this video ? If so how are they not something to worry about. They won't swell up with water and won't keep the new clay from sliding. Sorry , just concerned. Good luck. Hope to see a full pond soon.

Maybe a small concrete drainage channel from the end of the french drain and down into the pond makes the most sense. To me the main issue is that you haven't calculated the actual expected flow rate first, so you can design a solution that can handle the flow. You're doing the hillbilly engineering technique instead of using civil engineering science: "I'll just keep adding pipes 'til it works and stops eroding." There are published charts and people that can calculate the flow and design you something for you to install or build.

You don't have an overflow on the pond. It is used for controlled drainage of water during torrential rains. If you do not relieve the pond, the water will find its way on its own, usually at the lowest point of the dam and destroy it.

@@HometownAcres It is not visible in the video. It depends on the catchment area and the expected precipitation. In the Czech Republic, most ponds have a side trough, stacked with stones and led outside the body of the dam.

Do you have access to larger rocks,I lined all my pond shoreline with rock to prevent shoreline erosion,we had 4and 1/2 inches rain in 20 minutes and it held pretty good. Low water level leads to erosion especially when water level drops below waterline.
