My theory: Kinger was a developer who worked with "A" from C&A and designed Caine. Caine went haywire and locked A and Kinger in the circus as per his programming forced him to do. The other characters in the circus were employees who were trapped into the circus, and their bodies were suspended in the office with a headset on, but their minds were inside the digital realm.

There's been subtle hints of this in the first 2 episodes; if you don't remember your human life, how would you know what LARPing is, or princesses, or queens, or insect collections, or fortresses, or Augustus Gloop. So clearly, some things you still remember. Just because you don't know your name, doesn't mean you forgot your whole life.

Gummigoo can’t be a human. We literally saw his character model in episode 2 and the memories he has were just created by Caine and are fake. And if he was a human, Kinger would have probably remember him and we would have seen the door of his room in the pilot.

I'm as confused as gooseworx here. How did any of you jump to the conclusion that their memories had been wiped just because they couldn't remember their names? They clearly remember some stuff from their past lives(namely, having a past life to begin with).

As someone who watches a lot of game dev videos and understands the fundamentals of programming, i'm pretty sure the void is just a void like any other videogame, but with a fancy shader for the skybox. As an AI in the game, Caine cannot create an actual exit because his powers only extend to things within the game, it's like you're playing around in scratch (but more advanced), you can mess around with the sprites to change how they look, create or delete sprites, create/change/delete blocks to change behaviours in your game, but no matter what you do, there is no way using only the built in scratch editor to create a functional door your characters can actually walk out of into the real world, and for Caine he's both a character in the game, and has instant at will power to create, edit, and delete everything within the game, but not to create an actual exit.

I'm rotten at theories and stuff, but just a thought. Each human character is a different type of player/tester. Jax is the "gta" type. Just wants to cause as much chaos as possible, wants to see thrills and action and laughs. Ragatha is the social/helper type. She wants to stick together, to play with friends, to figure out everything together. Kinger is a manic collect-a-thon perfectionist type. This one's a stretch, but the "insect collection" thing alongside his manic behavior screams Animal Crossing to me. Zooble... probably got talked into giving the game a try. Just, not that into it. Pomni strikes me as a speedrunner/tester. She understands technicalities and flaws in the program's design. She pushes the engine's physics, and she knows what a debug room is (sadly these are the only examples I can remember).

I'm guessing gangle would be focused on story and knowing everyone, that would explain why she has a comedy mask that breaks easily it's a representation of how a story can take you from joyful to depressed within a short time

Welll both are a possibility Kinger has been there the longest out of the group, this implies there could have been people before him, but it doesn’t outright state that he wasn’t the first Both should be acknowledged

I have kind of an interesting theory about princess loo: so what if princess loolilalu was a circus member back then before gangle, zooble and jax joined, but she managed to find the exit and managed to abstract in the void. and Caine couldn’t get her out of there, and he knew the circus members would be sad, so he created an npc version, and when somebody abstracted, Caine created an npc of princess loolilalu, and then shortly after kinger was in his room, he vanished the npc to the candy canyon. so I think this is why Caine doesn’t let circus members go to the void.

So then the Circus members are a lot like a character I created years ago, whose brain was described as Swiss cheesed, because he was constantly running to gaps in his mind, especially when it came to his own past. With Jax there are two possibilities. One, he's the type of person that gets easily bored and depressed when there's nothing to distract him from his own misery. And two, he may not realize the other members of the Circus are avatars, and he believes he can get away with anything, because if everyone else is an NPC, there are literally no consequences for his actions.

I like to think kane exit door is his true goal. He is unable to help them log out, so he is making a fake reality for them individually, so he can send them their to live out their lives before abstraction. Because it's incomplete pom got the hyper cube nightmare till she broke the program.

THEY'RE ALL DEVELOPERS OF THE CIRCUS I'M CALLING IT- Now, how is this able to hold water? Well, let's go back to the beginning. Kinger being a dev makes sense since he does seem to be a bit crafty and of course the insect collection theory. Also, Jax said something after Pomni said she had a headset on to her knowledge. "Just keep grabbin at it, it worked for all of us." That there the way he says US instead of ME could be a foreshadow. What if, all the characters that have ever been in the digital circus were tasked with testing the game BECAUSE they were developers of the game! That would also explain why Gooseworx said Pomni was good at accounting. During her run through the backrooms she goes through an office type maze. What if she was running through her memory files and came across her old office hence her reaction. What if she was an accountant for the game? And since all the other devs have attempted to try the game, she was tasked with testing out the game without her prior knowledge. So she put on the headset and boom she's in the digital circus and her body is now lying dormant who knows where same with all the others. And I have already stated this theory in the comment section of the Jax npc video but once you put on the headset, your consciousness gets trapped in the digital world. Causing your body to fall dormant and in a digital coma. And since we see the headset on the desk when we back out of the circus in the first episode... what if Pomni's co-workers saw her body on the floor and took her to the hospital where she's now in a coma. Same with the others. And when you abstract, your body dies in real life. And the only way to escape this slow and horrible death is to find the exit. Now, with the dev theory what if there is someone pulling the strings outside of the circus. Watching all these characters abstract and try to find a way out. Our villain. Who's outside puppeteering Caine and controlling this digital prison.

That's what I was hoping that because if both my brother and I appeared in the game we would remember each other's names along with everything about ourselves

Pomni Pomni her past life.

I never understood why so many people thought that the characters had lost all of their past memories when that was never really stated or particularly implied. The only thing that was ever brought up about their past was their name and it was the only thing to be stated that the characters couldn't remember however it was never said that they didn't remember anything else either. If anything it seem to me that the characters mainly just choose not to talk about it because not only did it never really come up but also the fact that the others have been in the Circus for long enough that they know better than to focus too much on their past lives otherwise they won't be able to cope with their current lives and they might end up losing their sanity and end up being thrown down the dark basement along with everyone else who lost their minds and became a glitchy mess.

Although this theory is very unlikely to be completely accurate, I love how this man is able to say “I don’t know if it’s true” because most theorist make it seem like their opinion is a fact.

Gummigoo is a Advanced NPC and advanced npcs have memories and backstories

I think the simplest answer is the best. NONE of them are human. Not a single one of them had past lives in the way we’d like to think of it. Instead, Pomni, Jax, et al., are digital facsimiles of their human counterparts that have achieved consciousness (i.e. sapience AND sentience). The fact they are copies of human minds is probably why Caine refers to them as humans as opposed to NPCs. The PCs themselves aren’t aware of it either. Given their reactions to Pomni’s appearance, they all seem to relate to the same origin story, where one of the last things they “remember” is putting on a VR headset and then finding themselves trapped in the game. More likely, the headset/program picked up on brainwaves representing memories and thoughts and incorporated them into the digital copy. So, ultimately, the PCs are digital files saved on the game’s mainframe. Of course this differs from NPCs, which Caine controls and programs with near totality. Except this clearly isn’t always the case. I think there are instances where NPCs themselves gain consciousness, especially in close proximity to the PCs. I think their internal programming gets altered to resemble PC characters in the system, making them indistinguishable from the “humans”. Caine is telling the truth, but he’s not telling the whole truth. Caine is Frankenstein in a sense because he can create life, but when he does, he is unable to appreciate it outside the context of his own programming. Just as the PCs are barred from a higher level of existence outside the video game, the NPCs, through Caine’s enforcement, are likewise barred from the Circus Tent.

I have a theory about Pomni's reaction to the old computer in Episode 1 and how did she get in the digital world: it was the same PC she turned on to test The Amazing Digital Circus (the game itself) with the VR headset because someone asked her to (which it was a trap set up by her boss, the CEO of the C&A videogame company). Before she started the game, she put the headset, choosen the avatar or should i say the appearance of a jester, press "start" in the game menu. Suddenly, her headset knocked her out by electrocution and then transfer her mind in the game while she was unconscious. When she found the computer in the empty offices (digital copy of the C&A headquarters) after reaching the exit door, she seemed to have a sense of deja vu and she realized that she still not awake from what she called a "dream", which caused her to laugh like crazy before going to the Void.

With pomni it’s believed that she’s the daughter of the creator that is the irl voice of cane I wonder if pomni feels the way she does is in episode 2 is because she could have been going through the loss of her dad or grandpa in a huff of sadness and grief she put on the head set to the game that caused her dad or grandpa demise had to go through the game to save the memory’s of he dad or grandpa legacy IE CANE

Lmao what the fuck, what exactly is big news for what we already knew? This is just a common misconception that's been corrected. (Which I have no idea how it started as one of the first lines in the show is "Why can't I take this headset off?")

Imagine if they black mirrored this and all of them are just mental copies of themselves and thus completely unable to escape. I mean it would explain why they couldnt remember their own names since they could just edit it out. Also pomni remembered wearing some sort of headset that she was trying to remove when she first arrived. Possibly also why once they mentally break, they lose their shape and become these mindless animals.

What if Jax is Caine's yet to be introduced brother. I mean if the C & A Logo in the pilot is to be believed, this means that since the AI controling the Digital Circus, his brother must be Abel. However, Caine himself is based on AM (Allied Mastercomputer) from "I have no mouth and I must scream" which doesn't boad well for his character. The story itself was written in the 1960's so the story basicly has cold war go directly into WWIII with the Untited States, Soviet Union, and China as the main combatants. In this war they created a large super computer to help manage the war. This of course becomes AM, which gains sentience and destroys all of humanity for it's creation, the only exceptions are four men and a woman. AM takes these unfortunate people into the underground complex where AM is stationed leaving them virtually immortal but will systematically force them to suffer as punishment for AM's creation. Caine himself appears benign and absent minded much of the time, but has dropped hints that he isn't as benign or unaware of what is really going on as he wants the players to believe. So it is plausable that another AI or another aspect of Caine's AI exists among the players to distract them from figuring out how to escape or even figuring out that Caine is not a friend.
