Polynesian Navigation Paths Across the Pacific

The Polynesian sea people of the Pacific explored and settled across half of the world by advanced navigation techniques, exploring even to the shores of the Americas centuries before Europeans arrived. The modern revival of Polynesian culture from Hawai'i to Tahiti to Atearoa / New Zealand has been led by the rebuilding of traditional ocean going catamaran vessels. The Hoku'a'lea ship recently sailed from Hawai'i around the world using Polynesian star path navigation.

At 18:32, “Te Nangkoto” is a Kiribati (Micronesia) word that means “The” (Te) “Cloud” (Nang) “Pointer” (Koto). While traditional navigation methods may have been lost in other Pacific island nations, almost every island in Kiribati still have traditional navigators whose knowledge is family owned and a highly guarded skill. They never share it with others even in their own islands. They only pass their skill and knowledge to their son or grandson who will then possess almost all that there is to know. At the time the old navigator passed away, this son or grandson will be deemed worthy of the title of “Te Tia Borau (The Master Navigator)”.

What type if tree(s) were preferred for the main hulls of the ocean going boats? Did it depend on which island or was it one tree fits all?

The hibiscus Tiliaceus is used for making oars and also as wood for the floor. For masts, Hutu Barringtonia is used. For certain construction when the tree does not lend itself to it too much, in this case, the keel is composite. She is cut from Tournefortia argentea tahinu, Alphitonia toi and Nauclea forsteriana mara. They also use breadfruit wood for the shell.

@@pinkharrier47 Certainly it was different from one group to another, where they were, the mountainous islands or the atolls. Wood species should vary as well.

Technically I see most kiribati chart that make more sense. You should aldo acknowledge the kiribati navigation traditional knowledge. The clouds, the mwaneaba, the cloud formation like word nangkoto, zenith or taubuki, nao makoro are all kiribati terms. There is no real polynesia navigation in ur presentation its all hearsay for the polynesia.
