Polymer Clay Coasters with Caned Tiles, a Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I just love making polymer clay canes. Here is a simple one, made from just 2 elements and converted into a square cane. Add it onto more clay, and you have a coaster. I sand, polish and grout my coasters so they are great to use, but of course do not use these for anything straight from the oven or hob, that would damage the polymer clay surface.
So, go on, have some fun and make some coasters.

    Great tutorial! One question, What is your grout sanded or on sanded. Here in the US sanded grout is used for floor tiles and on sanded grout is used for wall tiles.

    thanks Rachel, step by step's are not everyone's cup of tea ;) and a video probably hasn't had a lot of views if it has no dislikes, so I never mind them :) I believe there are some people who take time to search out videos with no dislikes, so they can be the first to add one - we are all different, and that is what makes the world such an interesting place. But thank you for your lovely comments, I really appreciate them :)

    Alesia Howington, hi from South Australia. There is a web site called 'Wish.com' that sells inexpensive pasta machines, and a plethora of other polymer clay tools, moulds, resin, cutters, you name it they got it. Drawback is shipping time. Alternatively, Machoni who make traditional pasts machines in Italy also have web site. Hope this info helps. 🇦🇺

    I just love watching these videos it's so exciting watching how the designs come together, I've just ordered a pasta machine, so hoping to give this a go soon, is there any particular pattern you suggest to start with or do i choose and go? Thank you once again for sharing :)

  • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals

    @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals

    4 жыл бұрын

    thank you Caroline, how exciting :) My advice would be don't stress over choosing a pattern to start with, go with what calls to you, but keep it simple. Pay more attention to getting your cane equal down all sides, and those pointed corners nice and neat, than getting a particular pattern right. Then whatever you have as a pattern will kaleidoscope well together. Also, don't put yourself under any pressure, don't forget we are all our own worst critics, and simply enjoy it, have a play but mostly, just have fun with it :)

    Thanks Lee. Yes you could, of course they are not as robust as ceramic tiles, and I would definitely only sand and polish, not add varnish. They should be fine though as long as you treated them with care, and I believe people have used these in their own homes with success :)

    Oh these coasters are amazing, Fiona!!🥰🥰 Thank you so very much for mention me...you really didn‘t have to! 💜 I feel very honored!☺️ ❤️ THANK YOU!!💜 One question...i am going to visit my family next month in the US. My aunts favorite color is turquoise or green. What combination would you use? As i said before you use colors i would never think of, but everything turns out so beautiful!💜 I would like to make your coasters as a gift for her. Could you give me a advice? I will of course tell my family that you made the whole design!💜 But as she said green, i was completly lost!😂

    I would probably go for a Turquoise (Peppermint in FIMO Soft), white, Emerald Green blend, with quite a bit of white so the dark green doesn't overtake the blend, then match it with something like an acid green (Apple Green in FIMO Soft) with white and then an acid yellow (Lemon Yellow in FIMO Soft). That should give a nice overall green effect, with the warmer tones of the turquoise, deep green lifting the acid effect? That's my initial thoughts anyway, so hope that helps :) xx
