Double Cross Cane, Polymer Clay Pendant Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a fun and easy cane to make, and in this video tutorial I show how to make both the big design in the cane, and then how to re-orientate it to make the smaller, multiple squares cane. I give tips and techniques throughout, and show how to create this simple, but effective drop shape pendant.
I hope you enjoy it.
The stencil/template set I use are from PCUK Tools, who have both an Etsy site, and a Facebook page.
When I mentioned I was using the stencil I had bought in my next video, they very kindly said they would give a 10% discount for anyone buying any of their Stencil Templates, after seeing this video tutorial.
You need to purchase through their Etsy shop and put in the code POLYORIG when you shop. This discount will continue until the 30th June 2019. I used No. 006 in this video.

    Those are all beautiful but the one you made on the video today is stunning. I know part of it is the colors that just are right up my alley. I do love the shape of the one that has the red and apple green with the curvy points of the cross. They're all gorgeous!

    You're such a skilled and clever person! I don't try a lot of your canes,I'm not very good at making canes(but I love watching you make them),I have tried a few and this one is a definite try. I love the idea of making a cane that can play "dual" roles. I do have a question Fiona, if you don't mind. How do you know which canes,after you've made a gradient blend,get accordion(fan fold) and which ones get rolled up like a jelly roll? On a different note, I know this particular video is from last year,but I'm so glad to see you back on KZread. Your videos have started popping back up in my feed again.

  • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals

    @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals

    thanks so much John :) On the skinner blends, the accordion gives an even spread of the colour blend, the jelly roll tends to favour one end of the colour blend more. I love using them both, and often just sit and have a play with left over bits. My main problem is trying to remember, when I find a pattern I like, which I used, and how I did it :) I hope that helps, if in doubt, make a few of each up, cut them up, put them back together and just play - it is so much fun :)

  • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals

    @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals

    Oooh no, I am so sorry to hear that :( It is probably nothing more than practice. I have been working with polymer clay for so long now, that I am used to handling it gently, and not letting it overheat, or over conditioning the clay. I would suggest, if you have the patience for it, letting it 'cool' in between each stage so that any cane work you do stays as perfect as possible. It could also be something as simple as your blade being a bit blunt so distorting the cane when it cuts? If you are on Facebook, you could always message me, and send photos of what you have done, as I may be able to give more pinpoint advice if I could se exactly what is distorting. I hope that is of some help, but would always say to remember that we are our own worse critics and what you see as distorted, someone else may look at and go 'Wow that is amazing' :)

    Embrace it, love it and call it your own, don't stress about it, you have probably just invented a new technique, you just haven't recognised it as such yet ;) Seriously don't worry about it, I have a scrap box littered with 'wrongs' that happened before I got to what I considered 'right'. It just means you are giving it a go, and it will suddenly all go 'right' for you, when you least expect it to :)

    Hi Marcus, so glad you have done your first cane :) No, Sarah is mainly in books and does in person courses in many countries when she does one of her tours. She is on Instagram I think, and of course you can see images of her work if you do under a search of her name. I hope that helps. I saw a photo of one of her pieces in the first polymer clay book I bought, and I simply loved her style and work :)

    Thank you so much. I am sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean ? Do you need to create a photo of your own work, or video? I use a camera to film my video's then an editing app, then I upload on KZread. I hope that is some help, and apologise if something is lost in translation :)

    Fiona, You said something like this is not where we’re precise in shaping. What is the point when you become precise? How do you describe that? Cane making? Piecing a cane? You spent more time pushing down the ends so not to allow distortion. Is that it? Or maybe when you reduced the cane to 3/4”? I think you’re answer is going to be “yes.”

    Thanks so much for your comment. At times you need to be precise, others not. I try to let people know if they need to be careful about measurements at specific parts of the process. Some people like to be very neat, others are more relaxed, it is not possible to please everyone all of the time 😉🙃🙂 I hope that helps.

    @@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals, I tend to be quite haphazard but am relying on your instructions to guide me toward more precision. I like your attention to detail. I’m just trying to figure out when to apply it. I’ve written you that when I sent photos of my pieces. Also, when we’re reducing and the top layer starts disappearing at the ends I try to spread the top layer to the end so the lower layers don’t come through to save just a little more clay. Have you ever done that? I’m probably being too concerned and should learn to relax. Anyway, thanks SO much!

    @@boa1793 It sounds like you are doing everything right 🙂 I know people worry about being precise all the time, and that is why I try and say 'for this bit, don't worry about it' when I know from experience that that works. However some people like to be precise all the way through the process, and that is okay too. Everybody works in a slightly different way, and it is important to learn what is comfortable for you, and to do that. Never feel you have to be the same as anyone else, and that applies to the way we work with clay too. We are all different, and I love that 🙃😍 Yes, pulling the clay over the ends slightly is a great way of helping to reduce the distorted ends. You are definitley doing everything right, so keep on doing what you are doing, and enjoy your clay 🙂

    Fion, What is your favorite clay to use?

    I like them all, and use them for different things :) I like FIMO Soft for teaching, and for slicing through, I like Premo for it's increased flexibility after curing, I like Kato for its strength when I am making my complicated flowers and sculptures. I also use Cernit, which is a good all round clay. They are the main ones available near me, but I am sure the other brands are just as good. They all have slightly different properties, and people usually find one they like and stick with it. (Unlike me as I do such a wide variety of polymer clay pieces ;) ) So not a straight forward answer, but I hope that helps?
