Polyglot Reacts: Celebs Speaking German (Part 1)

🇩🇪 I found clips of some very famous celebs speaking German
and I'm going to be reacting to every single one of them-even the ones who could probably hurt me. And make sure you stay to the end if you want to know my favourite...
One more thing: I normally do these reaction videos on my own, but this time, I am excited to welcome my friend Anja from Deutsch mit ZALOA. She's a native speaker of German and it was great to get her take on how well these celebrities spoke her mother tongue.

    Honest opinion from a German native speaker and professional German teacher: Sandra Bullock: Shouldn't be in the list because she is a native speaker. Her German has become a little bit rusty after living in the USA for decades, that's why she confuses some articles and words, but she is still fluent. Prince Charles: He's obviously reading. Due to his accent I'd say he probably knows some German, but he's not fluent. I estimate that his real language level is B1. Prince William: He just memorized two sentences, I bet he does not speak German at all. Leonardo DiCaprio: His vocabulary is very basic and his grammar is quite bad. His German is not better than A2. Paul McCartney: He just remembers a few phrases he learned at school... He does certainly not speak German very well (probably not even A1). Johnny Depp: remembers some random phrases, same as Paul McCartney => A0 Gene Simmons: Hard to judge, he simply did not say enough to get a rating

    True. Sandra Bullock is the only one who is (reasonably) fluent (with the vocabulary of a 12 year old) and with a great accent, Leonardo Di Caprio can get by in a conversation with a reasonably good accent but low vocabulary, you can hear Prince Charles has probably learned some German when he was younger as part of his royal education and traditional ties between the Royals and Germany but his speech was notably scripted, same with his son, and the rest could just say some memorized words and phrases but not speak.

  • @madremoja

    @madremoja

    Жыл бұрын

    @@angelsjoker8190 Actually, Charles is fluent as well. Guess he learned from his father and got a very strict education. As he doesn't practice that often, he is slower. But besides the "r" his pronunciation is pretty close to high German like from the 50's or so. When he talks longer, at some words the British accent comes through, but more irregular. Like in one word he hits the sound and in another it has a British accent. But well, in Sandra's speech I also hear the American accent. You can hear that she uses German more often and she is a very talkative person in general. But both are on a high level of German. For William: not sure, as I don't have any example of him in mind where he is speaking longer. I would guess he has a solid education in German, but barely ever used it in his life. Would expect him to be able to have a free talk in German, but with some flaws and strong accent. For Leo: He obviously practiced with his grandma, but seems to have a medium level of German. Same seems to go for Gene. The rest picked up some German at school or by friends but don't really seem to speak.

    The problem with "ch" isn't the sounds themselves, it's when to use which. Sometimes it's like a Scottish lake, sometimes it's almost like "hue" or "ish", and sometimes it really is a "k". The problem with the R, from an American perspective, is that it acts like a French one in sound [unless you're trying to go full-on Bavarian, in which case it's Spanish, which is far easier...but still hard] and British one with WHEN to be sounded.

    House Windsor only became of that name in 1917 due to the anti-german sentiments due to WW1. Before that, it had its original german name house "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha" which succeeded the name "house of Hanover" after Queen Victoria died in 1901. So, the english monarchy has german roots, and Charles and William speaking german may not be such a big surprise.

    I'm a bit hasher than your critic although SB takes the cake. She's as close to native as it gets. But there's a 'trace', a 'hint' of English. Excellent German; she deserves the 10. Vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, even some Rheinisch. Wow! Charles is, at best, an 8, maybe a 7. And in my book that's very good. William not so much; a 6 would be generous. Leo does a fine job, quite impressive probably a 9 or a high 8. Sir Paul has a good memory and 'faking skills' (as you mention; from all the worldwide performances). One or two sentences are too small a sample. How about a 6. Mr. Depp obviously wanted to get away from the pesky reporter. It was still understandable; not too bad. Maybe a 5+. I'm not sure about Simmons. He has been around the globe and knows 'how to' deal with the press so, yes, he can feed them a few lines. They're 'pretty good'. At least a 6 and maybe a low 7.

    Sandra Bullocks speaks fast and nails the correct melody of the language, yet has a slight accent and clearly is not a native speaker. Still very, very good though, but not a 10/10. But a 9.5! Prince Charles read the words from a paper, most likley written in some kind of phonetic way. He does not seem to really understand what he is saying at any given time, his accentuation is off. But his pronounciation ist still very good, he clearly put in some effort, which is nice. But he pretty obviously does not know how to speak german. Prince William didn't even put in the effort. He basicly said hello with an accent. Everyone can do this in every language after 5 Minutes of practice. Leo's part in the movie is pretty good, but it's just a couple of lines he rehearsed. I'm more impressed with his free speaking, which is not very good, but the first actual free speaking we'ver heard so far. Yes, he actually speaks some german! Paul on the other hand seems to remember one german sentence from school and used that for decades, as it seems. It has always a polite and nice touch to speak a foreign laguage, but that gets a little old... Depp: random german sentence, funny and well pronounced. Simmons again just remembered like one german sentence from his schooltime, and made a few mistakes. Sandra Bullock and Leo stand out. The rest was not worth mentioning.

    Anja is well generous with here ratings imo ^^ But that's understandable bc when do we ever get to hear anyone properly learn or speak German? I would disagree on Sandra. You can tell she is not a native but it's very close. And nice thing is that she isn't speaking the Tagesschau Standard German that no one really speaks but that instead it sounds a bit more informal, like a real conversation. Charles has an interesting accent. Some of it sounds different than typical Anglophone accents I've heard. Leo is almost as good as Sandra but obviously, it's a line he learned. You can hear one tendency that few people talk about: the vowels are a bit long. German (on average) tends to have shorter vowels than English but few people realise that. An American friend of mine who speaks otherwise perfect German sometimes has her words a wee elongated. Leo also has some sounds slightly off but I couldn't tell you which from just one listen. The accent absolutely was not perfect though. Johnny had one grammatical error and obviously just learned the phrases but the accent was surprisingly spot on. That's a 10/10 for someone who clearly doesn't actually speak the language. Gene has an accent and uses some false friends and such but he seems very confident conversing in German. Getting a lot out of what he has, very commendable.

    I know this is unrelated to the video, but I'm still curious. As we all know famous actor Christoph Waltz is half Austrian and half German. So can any Deutsch speakers tell me: does he sound Osterreich when he speaks Deutsch, Deutsch or even a mixture of both? In comments on other videos, I've seen some say that he has accent of a upper class German speaker (from Germany) and one in the theatre. Do you agree with such assertions? :) great video as always Olly.

    He sounds a bit more German when he speaks. However, he has quite a harsh pronounciation of certain consonants which sounds more Austrian (I don't know a better way to describe it). Also, he is his "own voice actor". So, it's kind of important to not have a very strong accent when he dubs

    My father spoke English and German. My mother spoke English and Spanish. And although my siblings and I never picked up German or Spanish, aside from pronouncing various food dishes properly, the mere exposure in childhood helped several of us learn them all the more readily later on. I remember we used to have fun trying to get our dad to pronounce Spanish R’s and our mom to pronounce German R’s, which neither of them could ever do very well, but which all of us (kids) had no trouble with. So for parents who wish to raise multilingual children but worry that it’s just too much work, I say, don’t worry about it! Exposure alone will give them an invaluable leg up if/when they decide to dive into a language course later on. And confusion works itself out. By the time I was a teenager, for example, I discovered on my own that hash browns and Kartoffelpuffer were basically the same thing, and that the other kids at school had no idea how delicious they are mit Apfelmuss. Cheers! -Phill, Las Vegas

    Mein Kumpel, diese Denkweise ist Teil des Problems. Firstly, some words are just funny to begin with, and some become funny with the correct accent. It's true in English too [just try poppycock and try not to laugh], and as much as many of you German pride yourself on your English, your Vs and Ws are quite adorable. My Mexican friends and students love how I pronounce certain words in Spanish. Second, getting angry about things while doing so little to fix it just reinforces the problem. Try introducing perfectly workable phrases and expressions. This is precisely why most Spanish or English, even in foreign movies tend to generally be so good. They and we, we thank the attempt and try to improve it where needed.
