Yeah, Paglia is an advocate for the working class - going so far as to say that child porn/child prostitution should be legalized in their book Sexual Personae, but being the class aware person that they are - they made sure to make it clear that they’re opposed to child labor; meaning they only believe child sex work should be decriminalized so long as the children aren’t being paid. If y’all don’t want to read Camille’s books, I suggest at least reading their interview titled “The Purity of Allen Ginsburg’s Boy Love” published by Salon. Paglia is a infamous advocate for pedophilia and adult/child sex. I’m going to take a wild guess that the vast majority of the people praising Paglia in the comments of this video haven’t actually read anything from them. And for any people on here that believe Camille gives a “refreshing” alternative to contemporary identity politics - Paglia is a radical gender abolitionist that believes both sexual orientation and gender are a choice, and that choosing both heterosexuality and a cisbinary view of gender is backwards. Paglia chooses to identify as transmasculine as well as non-binary because they believe in the abolition of femininity. The vast majority of heterosexual men would be gravely disappointed if they weren’t cherry-picking Paglia’s rhetoric; Camille is an advocate for radical homocentric chauvinism first and foremost. It’s just something that isn’t instantly apparent from their more mainstream interviews, especially because gay chauvinism is fairly alien to most straight men - let alone someone on the radical fringes like Paglia. When they talk about the Greeks and Spartans, this is something they take very seriously and you might not know what all that entails if you aren’t familiar with the historical sexual norms of those cultures or Camille’s views on them. This is someone at a direct opposition to heterosexuality, traditional western family units, and age of consent laws. Foucault was also an advocate for radical free speech, pedophila, rape, and homoerotic chauvinism but I don’t see him having the same fan base as Paglia because he happens to be very popular among leftist elites and Universities. As much as Paglia claims to hate post-structuralism, they’re as much influenced by it as feminists like Judith Butler. If Paglia didn’t claim to be a feminist, I don’t believe so many “anti-feminists” would like them - they only get points with the mainstream for being an outlier among other feminists. There are plenty of better working-class liberals to get behind if you genuinely care about class politics. Camille is someone with very little interest in class politics, and only uses their working-class background as a way to appeal to the mainstream. If you agree with their viewpoints on the gender wars, and the negative cultural impact imposed by elitist academics - I’d suggest someone like Christopher Lasch, he’s not socially liberal but he is a leftist. Camille is likely one of the most radical feminists that has ever achieved prominence - perhaps the direct Inverse of Andrea Dworkin, but that doesn’t mean that they’re right. You’d be better off simping for MRAs. This is all out in the open, all you have to do is read Paglia’s books and essays - it’s not a conspiracy. You’d be surprised how many well-respected academics have wildly radical and toxic views. If her opposition consisted of anyone aside from other feminists angry over arbitrary disagreements, maybe people would listen.

This seems like a misreading to me. From what I've read of Sexual Personae - as I have not yet finished it - Paglia makes a distinction between behavior, and thought and artistic expression on the other hand. Gender and sex are masks only insofar as they are represented in literature and poetry, used by the author or artist. "Androgyny, which some feminists promote as a pacifist blueprint for sexual utopia, belongs to the contemplative rather than active life. It is the ancient prerogative of priests, shamans, and artists." What she's against is assuming that prudish heteronormativity is an adequate lens through which to view the history of art and culture. The claim that she is "against" traditional family units also seems unsubstantiated to me, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

If Bill would just admit to himself that PCness is far more of a problem than any of his other concerns, he would support Trump. He talks a good anti-PC game, but forgets what he just said a second after he says it. He lamblasts PC on campuses, but then won't follow through by actually supporting what it would take to remedy the situation. He realizes that he would lose 99% of his audience if he supported Trump. To: Someone who is no better or worse than anyone else, I am sure that you would agree. Perhaps, people at times, are dominated by what they hear the loudest and see the clearest. Other times, it is better to be not so preoccupied by sight and sound; to think of peace, freedom, love, compassion, faith and kindness. Equal rights are not words of easy definition. They come to us separately and differently. They are places to go to and come from when we see injustice. I think that it was unjust of Bill Maher to say to Camille " ... you think anything to do that you talk to fast." , in response to her admission of a " ... 10 year drought ... could not get a date ..." Life is all about kindness, and in moral terms, we have to accept people for the way that they are, and it was unkind to Camilla, and you can see her sadness written all over her face, and her struggle to retain her lost personal dignity, broken heart and identity. I have great respect in the way that she handled herself: and very very well. I may not agree with what she says, however, I will defend her right to free speech. No, many people can't stand her. It's not that she just throws out noxious talking points, nor that she acts as if she's the arbiter of right and wrong. She has a Manichean view of the world, and the world is not black and white. She speaks too fast to make it hard for people to ponder her views. Her thought organization is nearly incoherent, and her method is simply to intimidate people into thinking they can't keep up because she's brilliant. A good communicator interested in explaining her thoughts and influencing people honestly would strive to be understood. Her whole act is smoke and mirrors. She takes the views of a few women and generalizes about all women just to bash us. She's a tiresome fraud.

If you listen to Camille, you'll know that it's 2nd wave feminism that you have a problem with, it is the man-bashing and man-hating and man-blaming feminism that most of us associate with feminism that is 2nd wave feminism. What you're actually referring to as good feminism, or equality feminism, is 1st wave feminism. 2nd wave feminism was a fight between feminists like Camille and Sommers who wanted more equality not only in politics but also in personal lives, to give women the freedom to be themselves and risk the real world without a protective hand over them, and the feminists who blamed men for everything and were angry at the patriarchy. Camille will be the first to tell you that she lost that fight in the 60s because she became a philosopher and writer, whereas the feminists she was fighting became teachers and professors and leaders of communities. Camille has stated many times that the 1st wave feminist movement was split between those two philosophies and hers lots. 3rd wave on the other hand is neo-Marxism and post-modernism disguised as feminism, it actually has nothing to do with feminism or women at all, it is a political movement of totalitarianism and by far the most toxic of all.

I would disagree with this. And here's why: To rape/sexually assault someone, you actually have to physically do something to that person. That person isn't making it "more inviting" because she's drunk or dressed "provocatively." (Which I think is a bullshit term, btw. Control yourself. Just because someone is dressed "provocatively" doesn't mean that it's an invitation to get fucked.) Perhaps the situation is more advantageous to the rapist, but that's not the survivor's fault.

Every fucking 4 minutes a commercial break... US TV was insufferable in those days. Thank christ for HBO!

You are conflating sex, gender, and sexuality. Male and female does not equal man and woman. What it means to be male or female is completely biological. What it means to be a man or a woman is socially constructed. For example, there may cultures in which the roles of men and women are the complete opposite of what they are in the US. So, what it means to be a man would be completely different; therefore, if you consider yourself a man in the US, in another culture, because of your particular performance of masculinity, they would consider you a woman. (Note: This is all extremely simplified for the sake of brevity.) In the simplest of terms, sexuality is related to gender, not biological sex . So, one can have a penis (male), identify as a woman (transgender) and be attracted to men (heterosexual). Or one could have a vagina (female), identify as a man (transgender), and be attracted to men (homosexual). This is, of course, very simplified. The people in both of these examples can also just identify as queer rather than heterosexual or homosexual, but that would require quite a bit more explanation.

levi clayton And you just missed the boat on that one. I'm talking about someone, who knows what type of person they want to get together, before they know who they, themselves are. Oh, and according to science, when looking at twin studies, and animal genetics research, environment affects about 40 % of someone's overall behaviour. Social construct is not real, and there are also biological effects on behaviour. Psychologists teach that the nurture vs nature debate has been disproven, as seen, even in the case of David Reimer, that he was born male, and identified as male, even when castrated. I'm a psychology student, I would know about this, and this disproven theory was one of the first things that all, safe one professor, commented was just a theory that denies scientific evidence, just to save people's feelings. And yes, sex and gender are very much very interrelated. I would agree with Camille Paglia, that we need to look into what causes homosexuality, and even transsexualism, unfortunately, it is not politically correct, so we can't study this.

Apologies if my comment came off as engaging in a debate with you. I was trying to explain these ideas from the perspective of the feminists who left you "scratching your head." While I do agree with these formulations of sex, gender, and sexuality, I would not deny that there are other perspectives on them. However, I do not engage in debates about them. I am more than happy to have a discussion about them, but I would not claim that my way of thinking is the "right" way to think about them. This is just a way of thinking that has helped me to better understand myself, my development, my development, my identity, and in return others' identities and how they have developed. Congratulations on your status as a psychology student! I remember when I was studying psychology as an undergrad, and a little as a graduate student. I thought is was fascinating. However, I encourage you to spend the rest of your education seeking out and engaging with ideas that challenge the way you think. Your comments made me think that your profs and what you have been reading has only reinforced the way you thought before you started university. The point of education is not to acquire arguments that support your way of thinking, it is actually the opposite. Education should challenge you to change your schema, to develop a new world view that will help you think more critically about the world around you. So, next time that you are reading something or listening to a lecture that you passionately agree with, remember that that feeling is the indicator that you are no longer thinking critically, that you are not learning on the level that you could be. I wish you great success in your pursuits, and that your ideas continue to grow and change. Mine changed a lot through my education, and that is what I appreciate the most about it.

Ah. Sorry about that. I understand. Although I'm not one who follows feminist theories. They are full of holes, and yes, the ones who follow that, do exactly what you've warned me about focusing on theories I believe in. And yes, I do follow a more socratian method to learning. I always question, and I do come to a conclusion. Because of life experiences, I'm not satisfied with what is simply told to me.

"Under My Thumb" is a work of art, telling a story about a bad relationship. It's not "sending a message" as in propaganda. They probably think Mick Jagger actually "met a gin soaked barroom queen in Memphis" too.

I liked Bill Maher when his humor was less condescending. This light interview with Camille is a gem from his old show.

What a great interview. Striking to hear it in 2022. This could not be seen these days, let alone made.

I agree with Paglia a lot but I don't totally agree with her views on rape. I get that if women advertise they should be ready to sell, but that doesn't excuse rape. You can't just say "Well you made it into my house, therefore you have to give me sex." A woman might change her mind for whatever reason. Maybe she wasn't totally sure she wanted sex and then just didn't feel totally comfortable and so she changed her mind. I get that it is frustrating to be led on like that, but to rape her and say oh well she advertised it, eh, that's not right. She also says that rape is a sexual act, not a violent one. Well why do people have sex or at least, why do they want to have sex? They like the person and they want to be intimate, it feels good; it's an emotional rush. It's not just about the physical act and physical feelings. I actually don't get rapists. What is there to gain from rape? The person didn't like you, so you can't feel good about yourself. It's not respectable to rape, so you can't brag about it or be proud of it. So why do people rape? Obviously they're horny, but why go through the trouble and possible severe consequences just to relieve your horniness? I think rape is about being violent, or dominant, or whatever. I don't think it's stupid to say that rape is a violent act and not a sexual one.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think she's leaning more in the column of guys are not wrong to expect it to lead to sex stage rather than a justification of rape. If you look at how society has gone since this interview we now have a society which think women can remove consent after the fact or give consent and claim she felt it would lead to being raped if she didn't or the mentality that if both people are drunk somehow the man is not only able to consent (and she isn't) but he's supposed to be able to judge whether she's in a position to consent.

She was and is so cool. Confident, clever, humorous.

Man I hate when people put the blame on r*pe victims...I immediately lose all empathy with anyone who does that.

Politically Incorrect was so much better than Real Time. Don't know why he doesn't go back to more of this format (yes I realize it was mostly panel).

I enjoyed hearing a younger Paglia speaks, but found the profane topics offputting. Here is a genius and Maher just asks juvenile questions.

Paglia should at least be heard and read by both women and men. Peace!

Camille is quite ravishing. She reminds me of a very very hot Miss Jane from The Beverly Hillbillies.

She's extremely empathetic to men and very hard on woman. I could figure her psyche in 15 minutes.

7:34 LOL! That kinda joke would end a career these days. Too bad Maher has lost his spine in his later years or he might still be making amusing, controversial jokes.

You would have to hire a stenographer to take notes in her class.

I'm afraid she doesn't speak too quickly: people just fail to keep up with her. It's different.

La Petite......she talks fast for a New Yorker.....and i do agree with your second point...the avg person needs a second or two to fully absorb what she says after she's done or they're just trying to shift mental gears from focusing on her talking to their own train of thought

I've had moments where my mouth was too slow for my brain and I started talking erratically to see if I could get all the ideas out. I imagine that's what Camille is like all the time. Maybe it's because she reads and thinks about things a lot...

Nice debate. Camille Paglia was never one to shy away from the more 'controversial' subjects like gender politics, the contemporary judicial system and over-all hypocrisies that are entrenched within religious and academic institutions. Clearly an underrated journalist/philosopher, Camille is both articulate and fearless. And this conversation is a good example of those attributes.

Maher's opening monologue reminds me so much of Johnny Carson's style & how infectious he was for comics in the 70's & 80's... even into the early 90's.

One reason that made me an expat: the increasingly commercial nature to all things. Look at talk shows from the 60s and 70s such as Dick Cavett: far less commercial interruptions, more time for expressing thought. By the 2020s, it’s all about product placement.

Camille Paglia is funny, intelligent and has a twisted sense of humour, everything that modern day feminism is not.

Human respect covers it all, isms screw things up.

This is definitely the first - and likely simultaneously the last - time I have heard Grunge tarred with the label "PC", _and I was there. I was up to my knees in rice paddies..._

Correction: It's undeniable that many people "blame the victim a little bit when talking about rape."

Maybe it's an American thing but in Europe (as far as I know) going to someone's house after a date doesn't mean consenting to sex. It just means you want to hang out some more.

As for accusations...the sexual act pretty much has to be violently enforced to constitute rape. I don't know what other sensible definition of rape there could be. If there are women who accuse men of rape for seducing them on a date then that's ridiculous.

And why do you need to go to his house to get to know him? Aren't there plenty of other places you could go? House = extraordinary privacy. And w.r.t. to these social norms, that's what it used to be FOR A GOOD REASON. You had clear social conventions which allowed clear communication about these things to be done effectively. You were free to feel the impulses and so on, but the social conventions gave you a way to manage them and stay in control so that when you DID go to his house, it was clear what that meant. And if you didn't, it was clear what that meant. Now, women go to his house, feel the emotion, get into bed, have sex, and then feel guilty and blame him for the mistake. Fuck you. You want to be a big girl? Act like one. Take responsibility for your actions. Sex isn't for children. It is a powerful force that is best left to the adults who are better at managing it AND if they do screw up take responsibility for it instead of lying and pretending to be a pure virgin, daddy's little girl. Grow up, you infantile twat. If you're equal, then equal expectations and equal responsibility. You can't clap with one hand.
