It's hyperbolic obviously, but that's still world-class manipulation by Sir Humphrey.

I think you mean "exaggerated." Hyperbolic applies only to language, not to theatrical depictions.

When Hacker picked up the phone and Humphrey popped into the office, Humphrey had already laid down the trap and Hacker was dropped into it unknowingly. Manipulation at its finest.

Sir Humphrey at his most sinister. Even when he was shilling for tobacco companies, he wasn't so nakedly Machiavellian. What manner of kickback did Sir Humphrey receive from this deal?

it's not the deal humphrey cared about, he wanted to get rid of frank to make sure the only advice jim gets will be from the civil service. luring frank to propose a speech that humphrey knew would make jim looks bad would in turn make frank looks bad to jim for his bad advice.

@@blaze4111And even if the minister falls with Frank, a new minister will merely be appointed, and civil service business will carry on regardless. Sir Humphrey holds all the cards.

@@mattevans4377 okay? a minister will still be around for about 3-4 years so humphrey wanted to make sure the only advice jim gets during his term will be from the civil service. he tried to do the same with dorothy in "yes, prime minister" but she's way smarter than frank weisel.

Humphrey generally isn't motivated by money. He is motivated by power, prestige, and ensuring that his (or rather the Civil Service's) agenda wins out.

It's very early in the series. Later on the clashes between Sir Humphrey and Jim Hacker became more of different points of views with logical arguments in their own manner.

I enjoyed it when his new advisor, Dorothy, would fluster Humphrey. But the best time, was when she did it to Sir Frank. Peter Cellier should have gotten a bigger part, as he was great as Sir Frank. Among other things they got right, was the casting.

I think the reason he disappeared was because the actor suffered a traumatic brain injury and had to retire

@ndy270Agreed. It was better with Dorothy, as that weasel joke was growing rather thin. It's unfortunate what happened to the actor who played that part, though.

This has nothing to do with trade deficit. It's that the government itself imports wares instead of buying and supporting the local economy. Trade deficit one way or the other wouldn't make this better or worse.
