Just a note to anyone wanting to do this. I just glued 1” glass mirror squares onto a dish using silicone caulking. It is extremely easy to do, and really very powerful.

You can now purchase rattle can chrome paint and mirror paint off the store shelf. After using 600 grit sandpaper go directly to using auto body primer followed by the chrome paint. Alternatively, you can powder coat the surface with a silver mirror finish at home relatively easily now.

Fair play to you that must have been so frustrating! I think the issue is the mylar probably would have stretched better I'd you'd cut and laid it in strips and then the shape of the dish.

I've quite a bit of experience in polishing metal, I'd of started with 120 grit and gone up to 12k then moved onto liquid compounds, I know like it sounds like harder work but it isn't and probably would have been quicker and way better results, but if that works for you then it's a good job, I love watching your content.

I have made several reflectors using these three steps: 1) Random orbital sander instead of the angle grinder. Small one-handed type. 2) Paint stripper instead of heat gun 3) Automotive rubbing compound the automotive polishing compound for the final shine.

@@TheDIYScienceGuy I would have never considered a sat dish until I watched this video. Just made minor changes for the finishing process. The progressively finer sand paper technique was used for the prep.

I love this idea but I don't have the sanding tools. I'm using mirrors and I'm laying them down with gorilla tape like a mosaic. I'm hoping the tape holds up in the sun

Cool project. And you never gave up. I have an old dish, but I would rather use it with a microphone. To focus sunlight, I would choose a Fresnel lens.

Looks like a great way to get over "Scratch and Win" addiction.

I like your music it's better than that endless computer generated music that many videos have. By the end of those videos your about ready to go insane. You must have lots of time on your hands. However the end result is really great. Bravo

Drill a hole in the back of dish ,take the material cover dish like a drum glue it around the outer edge of dish sealed. glued good , the hole drilled in middle of dish, take 3m adhesive spray ,spray into hole don't over spray it doesnt take much a fine vapor of the spray works,and since there isn't any other hole in dish spraying glue the pressure has no where to escape ,now connect a vacuum pump to the hole in dish and remove air in dish the material will draw down tight with no wrinkles and glue will hold it , keep vacuum connected until glue drys.

i have been keeping an old satellite dish that was out in my backyard when i bought my house - it's one of those HUGE old ones... but i want to do the same thing so i can use it to generate steam and run a turbine... given the sheer size, do you think the emergency blanket would work since it would obviously form to the 'mesh' of the dish... or would i have to use something solid... guesses?

Well I've seen people use thicker aluminium coated Mylar because it has a thicker coating and there fore reflect better. Cut some triangle shaped strips and glue them on. The milar is pretty easy to find and cheep. Good luck and please let me know how it goes!

The emergency blanket could have worked! If you pulled it tight first in a star pattern then draw a vacume from the back and cover the holes with tape. you didn't wrap the outside edge with good tape so it leaked. Most dishes are galvenized. So sanding is futile. ALUMINUM tape works well enough if you sand the disk first. It can easily light a board on fire with aluminum tape. Cheap and very fast. It works ! And you have bare metal that will rust or require more elbow grease. But hey, it was a fun project I'm sure!

My arms and shoulders are aching from two days worth of sanding and polishing a 30" offset satellite dish. I can relate to how hard it is after the hours of elbow grease. I started by putting paint remover on the dish, then sanding from 40-7000 grit paper, then polishing with Brasso. After polishing I noticed quite a few deep scratches I had missed by not having the right light angle on the dish as I sanded it. So, today was spent starting over on sanding...heartbreaking! But, I am back up to 2000 grit as we speak and its starting to look good. It's incredibly smooth and almost looks like it has a clear coat on it, although not totally mirror reflective at this point. I think I may have spent too much time trying to 'smooth out' the offset angle as I wanted to widen my focal point to spread the heat in a wider focal point. Tomorrow I work back up to the 7000 grit and will use a buffer to compound polish, then use a better metal polish (Gord's) to take it to a mirror finish if all goes well. So this brings me to my question...did you coat or seal your dish with anything to prevent rust and oxidation?

A highly condensed version maybe depending on the results. It could be a video of what not to do lol. I will say that I saw a noticeable difference going from the 2000-7000. If it doesn't turn out the way I need it, I may try my hand at making a parabolic dish out of plexiglass and a mirror-effect spray. I've yet to see it done for a solar cooker but it looks like it has potential to work.

You can't hold the water on its side without it flowing out unfortunately...

Got any ideas on how to 'inflate' a variable focus space foil that's about the size of a US football field, to the correct shape and overall curvature? Cheapest might be spinning it, but a perpendicular arc to the solar wind so it doesn't get blown or blinded or reverse umbrella'd. The idea is a newtonian reflector, similar to all of the most modern space telescopes, but using computational optics and foil surface measurement to correct for any unfortunate dimples or wrinkles. Hubble has to point at an object for upwards of thousands of hours to get enough light to average out into an image, where something with 1000x more reflector area could do it in a couple hours with the right approach. With the right optics (we're getting advanced here), it can even offer far better resolution, if you are able to use a giga or terapixel array and process the data along with the reflector surface map. #TechnologicalStagnation

Well I’m a physics teacher and can definitely saw DO NOT use an angle grinder with 80 grit flap wheel. The scratches left will take hours to remove. Buffing wheels and compounds work well too.

Thanks I'll give that a try! Although it turned out that it is a steel dish with a layer of zinc, that's why it did not polish as well as you would expect.

Was it steel dish ,because we know tv dish made off by aluminium.

What you should’ve done get yourself a cotton Wheel Single phase 1175 Motor attached the cotton wheel two it got yourself solid block of aluminum Roush Half an hour you would of had A mirror finish that would’ve blown you away simple you did way too much work good luck

If it starts rusting you need to protect it with a layer of clear varnish or something like that.
