I’m honestly terrified of the day when my service dog passes. She’s been beside me almost every day for nearly 7 years. I had pets before her, pets that I loved a great deal, but I never had bond like I do with her. I know that day will come eventually, could be in a year, could be in 3. Or maybe even longer if I’m incredibly lucky, but there’s no way to really know. I dread that day though and I know it’s going to crush me. I just try not to think about it.

So have had six different dog guide partners over 40 years and trust me, retiring never gets any easier. I’ve never replaced any of my dogs; they are all unique and when they retire, they leave a lot in their wake and take a little piece of my heart each time. I had decided after retiring my last partner to go back to using a white cane which I did for 4 years and when I got a new partner after all that time, Oh what a feeling, what a rush! During my dogless period, for the first few days, I often gave dog commands to my white cane; stupid stick never did what it was told!

I remember watching this on TV so many years ago, and it really did make me cry. I had never been able to find it again since, and suddenly stumbled upon this playlist and sure enough, it is here. Cyr was a good boy, doing his job without fear, saving the lives of those inside the house, and possibly those officers, at cost of his own. I still wish it was made mandatory for all on duty police K9's to be wearing protective vests from possibly being stabbed or shot, giving them a higher chance of survival in dangerous situations. I can't help but think about K9 Jedi from the Seattle area, who 6 or 7 months ago was fatally wounded taking down a bad guy. He had no protection when the guy pulled a knife and stabbed Jedi multiple times before officers opened fire on the guy, putting him down... If only Jedi had a vest like that, that day could have ended a lot different. Now that doesn't mean the handler did anything wrong, I do know a lot of departments don't consider buying the dogs these pieces of valuable equipment, so their handlers just don't have the vests to start with. If it was something made mandatory for all departments to have these pieces of equipment for their K9 officers, it would greatly improve their survival rate in case a situation does goes bad. Makes me feel extremely bad for the handlers who will live with that decision of sending their K9 after the suspect, and getting killed or fatally injured and die soon after. We know those fallen K9's are in a better place, having all the bad guys to chase down or balls to fetch, and whatever else they want.

It's false economy not to buy this equipment they spend so much time training these Dogs anything that increases their survivability is well worth it.

I don’t think releasing the dog was the smartest thing to do. Why weren’t the Mounties giving him commands to drop the gun? Were they all just standing & staring? In the US, the police would have discharged their weapons automatically if the suspect didn’t drop the gun.

Gee whiz. So many people are saying, "They should've shot the suspect." Do we really place such a low value on human life? Besides, even if the officers in this incident had fired sooner, it wouldn't have been easy to take the suspect down. A person's arms, legs, and even head are pretty small targets, especially shooting from that distance with a small weapon. And if an officer had missed, a bullet could have easily gone into the house and hurt or killed one of the innocent family members. (Recently, some friends of mine narrowly missed getting hit by a stray bullet that came into their apartment from a shootout between police and suspects in their complex.) From what I've seen (and there are exceptions), most officers don't WANT to shoot anyone, even a suspect. In multiple documentaries, I've heard officers say that shooting someone is a heavy burden to live with, even if they fired in self-defense or in defense of another person. Police are also supposed to follow strict rules about the use of deadly force. One officer whom I knew said that in his department, if an officer even drew his/her gun, s/he would have to have to write a report to the chief explaining why. That officer said the only time he'd ever drawn his gun was when a suspect had threatened him with a butcher knife. I knew another officer who tore his ACL while struggling with a suspect who was resisting arrest. Even in a situation that serious, I never heard anything about guns being used. Given all that, it seems to me that Officer Kaye made the best decision he could to minimize the possibility of anyone getting hurt. Sadly, this time it didn't work out that way.
