Michael Winslow was a stand-up comedian. One night, the electricity went out (as did the microphone), so Michael started doing all his sound effects as improv. The writers (or producers) of Police Academy were in the audience and knew they had to write a character for Winslow. And, the actress who played Hooks had been in a musical - Michael Jackson came backstage to meet the cast - and she decided to do an impression of Michael for her Hooks audition. :) I'm a lifelong fan of Police Academy.

Police Academy is such a fun series. I have to say the 2nd (introduction to Zed) and the 4th are probably my top favorites and definitely recommend the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th films in the future. 5 and 6 are decent, with 6th having a few memorable scenes. Which may be partially due to growing up with the 6th film before discovering the others. I see a few comments about Winslow during a power outage, ironically he does a similar scene in the 6th film.

Man im getting old and it sucks. Anyway thanks for making me feel like a kid again for 5 mins. 😂

Aaah man, I loved these movies as a kid. Used to watch them whenever they were on TV. I see now that there were certain parts I did not understand and why my mom was not a fan of her 5 year old watching these with her dad.

Did you notice when Barber swung around with the gun and everyone ducks away scared to be shot next, that Tackle berry was the only person who didn't duck out of the path of the gun? This is because as a gun but he knows the gun can't fire again until another round is chambered by pumping the barrel. Something that Barber didn't do

I met Michael Winslow in the 90s. I was working at a pizza restaurant that had a comedy club in it. We had michael as an act one weekend. He came in the kitchen and BSd with us. He was super cool. His show was awsome too.

Great reaction i love the Police Academy movies. I was born in 1980 i first saw this when i was 7, and i loved the following 5 sequels which came out each year after showing how many of the characters develop. The less said about the final film the better lol, the only good thing i can say is that the 5 regulars in that one did okay, but it needed more rather than relying on so many new characters.

Huge chunks of this and the series were filmed in Toronto. I've been to the bar that stood in as The Blue Oyster, the Riot breaking out where the mob chases after the first guy going down the street, that's Kensington Market. Other scenes filmed in other locations. Like the Old Zoo in Part 2, no idea where that was filmed.

So that my first comment won't get its heart taken down, I wholeheartedly agree that we need jack-of-all-trades actors and actresses. Interestingly, there was a pilot for a show that showcased an actors hidden talents (basically AGT but celebrity-biased), but it was cancelled.

The song in The Blue Oyster Bar is the 1975 song "El Bimbo" by Gigliola Cinquettio. In traditional Italian "el bimbo" is a diminutive form of "el bambino" which means "little boy". I will leave it to your imagination how that term applies to the two rookies who stumble into that bar, twice. As I recall, 'The Boys' in Atlanta found this scene hilarious in the Eighties. They had a bad history with cops hassling their bars. I've been in a couple of leather bars, back then, as a hetero tag-along: This scene is only somewhat exaggerated.

Police Academy is fascinating as a FRANCHISE because the box office and budget for each film follows a perfect curve. They made the first 6 of these /annually/ every March through the 80s...and then they went on to have almost no relevence.
