Poland's homeless go underground to survive deep freeze | AFP

As bone-chilling temperatures strike across Europe, the homeless of Poland's capital Warsaw have a solution to the sometimes deadly freeze. Thanks to a network of municipal heating ducts, they are able to stay warm underground.Duration: 02:04

After my divorce my husband married a woman much younger than I was and tossed me to the street. I ended up sleeping in an abandoned mausoleum at night and foraged for food during the day. I was able to bathe in the river after I dug discarded soap from a an apartment dumpster so I wasn’t extremely filthy. I lived like that for three months. After I had gathered enough change to buy a good pair of shoes from the thrift shop I was able to get a job on a fishing boat. The man allowed me to sleep in the moor house. After four paychecks I was able to get my own small place. But more importantly I wasn’t foraging for food and setting traps in the river. It wasn’t all horrible. There were moments where the fireflies illuminated the moss draped from the trees and it seemed as though I had died and had entered the universe itself. It might have been because I was so hungry that it was easy to imagine being weightless enough to float off into space. Or maybe my mind was desperately trying to find something lighthearted. I am so thankful I made it out of homelessness.

there are homeless people that work full time. as well as homeless children and adults who aren't on drugs. I was a homeless child myself for a time because my father, the sole supporter of the family died suddenly of natural causes. Heart attack, ""not drugs or something crazy like resisting the police or robbing someone."" So we lost our home and my mom refuse to give us up to foster care. she's disable and don't make enough money on her own to support a family or herself. Anyway drug addiction needs to be treated. not looked down upon. you never know what lead a person to try their first high. sometimes life hit rock bottom for folks. dont judge what you haven't gone through.

Even if they were users/addicts, they’re still people with feelings. If they were using, that doesn’t mean they deserve to be homeless and it doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the comforts of a home. Also, a lot of homeless people weren’t using and weren’t addicts when they became homeless, they became addicts/users after they became homeless. Often times, addiction is a result of homelessness. Homelessness and addiction go hand in hand. The difficult and sad living conditions like struggling to acquire basic necessities, struggling with health, having to be hyper vigilant to try to keep yourself safe, creates a constantly stressed state in a person. Individuals dealing with homelessness can additionally develop psychiatric conditions in response to the harsh lifestyle; violence, hunger, assaults, lack of medical assistance, lack of shelter and lack of love/support. Reports suggest that 33% of homeless people (U.S) battle mental illness. Mental illness can also go hand in hand with addiction/homelessness. Mental illness can also be another significant cause of homelessness, which can lead to substance abuse. In addition to suffering mental illness, homeless people struggling with mental conditions are more likely to be victims of assault, further needing any temporary comfort from a substance. Which can create a destructive cycle of dependency. Some may self medicate with harmful substances as well. Homeless women suffer unique gender based trauma, contributing to higher amounts of drug use with homeless women than with men. While around 30% percent of homeless people overall suffer mental illness, the rate is significantly higher in female populations. 50% to 60% women suffer mental and emotional disturbances which often come before their homelessness. Many homeless women become homeless in response to escaping pasts with domestic violence or sexual trauma; some victims who fled sex trafficking, etc. Those factors along with other disorders from homelessness have contributed to the fact that 1/3 of homeless women have abused crack-cocaine and heroin. Many homeless youths are victims of substance abuse. Youths aged 12-17 are at greater risk of homelessness than adults, many are victims of severe abuse. 71% of missing, runaway, or abducted children have reported a substance abuse disorder. Homeless youth with substance abuse problems are much more vulnerable to long term substance abuse and untreated co-occurring conditions that follow them into adulthood. LGBTQ+ homeless populations suffer from high rates of substance abuse. They suffer from stress which stems from internalized feelings of social or cultural exclusion, which in turn fuels their chemical dependency. Sadly, members of the LGBTQ+ community have a 120% higher risk of homelessness. Homelessness is more common within the transgender community. Although specific estimates of the percentage of homeless youth who identify as LGBTQ* vary widely, estimates generally land somewhere between 11% to 40%. Next time you think “they do not seem drunks or drug addicts but good people” just know that a lot of addicts/drunks are good people, who are just struggling. Compassion is what will help, not judgement.

If you're so ignorant you have no clue how most police depts treat the homeless in the U.S. then I'm sorry for you. The homeless know how it works here. I just saved a man two weeks ago who was freezing to death after the police refused to let him stay in the lobby overnight because he had nowhere to stay warm & couldn't get to his home 140 miles away. He was mystified that they refused to help him. I wasn't. I've worked in the criminal justice system 24 years, downtown amid the homeless population & I KNOW what they endure & the heartlessness they encounter among Americans & especially the police. Not that all officers are non-caring as I reiterate ; it's the departments who have the policies of not caring. Yet, it was the Albuquerque police who shot & killed a homeless VETERAN for absolutely no reason whatsoever. You should look up youtube videos about the subject before you start attacking me for simply stating facts. I am American & I won't leave my country but I am ashamed of the heartlessness of the culture in general towards those who are struggling.

@@Junior-nt5nr As someone who has lived in a homeless shelter in america, that's not how that always works. Most of them have time limits, some are closed one or two days of the week, some turn you away if they even suspect you might use drugs, some enforce rules that make it hard to find employment, and while the volunteers are great the workers are usually the opposite. Very judgemental and uncaring, it's just a job to them and they're sick of it like anyone at a long term job. Also some people have unaddressed mental health issues or are unmedicated and can't properly live in shelter situations. It seems like a simple issue, but most homeless shelters aren't actually there to help people. (Of course there will always be outliers but those are the minority and you usually have to meet strict criteria for the help they offer)

We don't hear news that someone shot someone. I grew up on American movies and as child whenever I heard ambulance in Warsaw i was saying "Mommy, someone got shot!". My parents needed to explain me Poland is not America, so its most likely car accident or hear attack. Took me a while to make a difference... police? Definatelly different from what is in States. Police is there to help. I had police picking up cat (which i found under my car) from my house and taking it to the shelter. Well when people dont shoot around police have more time to help others on normal matters....

News (www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-16875493 ), the idea that the Polish homeless are being served soup by the Polish police does have veracity to it: "Relatively few victims of Polish winters die in their own homes. According to the police, most victims are homeless people. So they have launched a 'Don't be indifferent' advertising campaign, urging people to report sightings of people sleeping in train stations or garden allotment sheds, so they can be offered a bed in a shelter. Every day police patrol locations that homeless people are known to frequent, and offer them hot soup."
