How Homeless College Students Get by at California's Humboldt State | NowThis

For a shocking number of students, the college experience means living in your car to avoid massive debt. These two students showed us how they get by while homeless and in college.

1 in 5 college students at Humboldt State University in California are homeless. It's among the worst-affected public colleges in a nationwide crisis. This is what they face every day.
Jasmine is a 23-year-old kinesiology major at Humboldt. She's been living homeless amongst her peers for a year and is open with friends about it to learn who is going through something similar. She has a full ride academic scholarship. She carries what would be her bedroom closet in a shoulder bag.
California's unaffordable housing crisis and the rising cost of college are putting students in a rough spot. An estimated 50,000 students in the California State University system are experiencing homelessness.
Nolan is a junior at Humboldt state studying geology but you'd never know that he's homeless. Nolan lives out of his car. According to Jasmine, 3 or 4 students can be seen sleeping in their cars in the parking lot overnight.
Chante Catt, off-campus housing liaison at HSU, blames the local student homelessness on the housing stock, Airbnb, and the policies and practices of the property managers in the area. Nolan and Jasmine have avoided taking out students loans to pay for housing because of the future financial burden.

I went through this as well last semester at CU Boulder, where a housing crisis is occurring as well. Luckily I had a kind, caring friend who let me crash on her couch for a bit so I wasn’t sleeping in my car. What’s not mentioned in this video is how incredibly hard it is to complete schoolwork and focus on academic success when your basic needs aren’t being met. It’s depressing that when those of us without generational wealth try and get an education to set us up for a better future, we are met with these incredibly hard obstacles that many of our peers do not even have to think about. College should not just be for the wealthy, or even just for the middle class. We all deserve an equal opportunity to access education and housing.

I remember when I went to college it was absolute culture shock. I worked full time and went to school full time to support myself. I literally would get off work, then go to school, get home and study until 3-4am and get up at 7am the next day. I was lucky that my rent was around $1,000 but now rent for a studio apartment has sky rocketed so much that it's insane. There are those college kids who are lucky and get everything paid for by their parents, but for the ones that struggle and want to go to the school they love and the major they want to grow and change the world in, my hearts out to those kids.

Not even just that, but all state colleges were federally funded back then. They were called Land Grant Universities for a reason, and Federal subsidies made it possible for colleges students to work a crappy job and still pay for tuition and a place to live. Even without the housing problem, inflation, and other economic woes, education coffers have been starved for decades. The students are truly admirable for overcoming these obstacles and creating their own ecosystem. As a California native living in the San Francisco Bay area, I’ve given up on going to school. Too many of my friends owe thousands of dollars in debt and some of them can’t even find jobs. Those who can’t find jobs with bachelors, end up going back to school because it’s their only option but in the process they rack up more debt. At this point in life I am thoroughly convinced it’s not what you know, but who you know.

Imagine how tight his budget must be with $5~70000/year pay with $60,000-100,000 debt looming over his head. It would take him at least 5-7 years to pay for all his debt and that would be an extremely lucky case. After paying his debt off, he is got house/living cost to worry about. Would he have saved the money up to get himself a place to live by then? Or would he have to spend another decade just to come up with it? If he was to go down the path of student debt, he should have chosen a major that would land him on 6 figure job. They could get a part-time or even a full-time (gasp) job while going to college. Plenty of students actually HAVE to work during college. Some people have to work AND take care of their kids. I have no sympathy for them. They're choosing to live this way. They can choose not to if they want. And they certainly still have it better than real homeless people- this is all temporary for them.

David S choose??? In what world The average cost of college there is “In-state 7,195 USD, Out-of-state 18,364 USD” and assuming they’re instate but don’t have family to take them in housing is an additional “$6,136 for housing and $6,446 for the meal plan.” PLUS The extra 1200 the college board says students spend on average for textbooks and other needed materials Add all this to together and you’ve got at LEAST $20977 that’s not even including necessities like toiletries NOW Let’s look at the average salary for a part time job in CA using someone working 30 hours a week they’d make a whooping 15840 However if for some reason they got hired for a full time job (in college??? Unrealistic but ok) working 40 hours they’d make 21120 Accounting for social security with a 2 week paycheck you’d make the incredibly large amount of 19810 which is over a thousand dollars less then your lovely IDEAL sum of $20977 Now tell me again how they CHOOSE to be homeless

Pablo Escobar in this economy? The majority of jobs that will support you require a college degree which you can’t exactly “save up for” it’s not a simple thing. There’s few jobs that pay relatively ok without experience but even then you have to have a specialized sort of talent that not everyone is capable of possessing. Don’t be unrealistic college is there for a reason if it was realistic for the average to get a decent job without going there I guarantee you these people wouldn’t be sleeping in there cars and others wouldn’t put themselves hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt

As some one who's done all of the above, working while going to school is extremely hard and draining. If I wasn't working, I was at school, or doing school work. I also took out loans (against my desires, because my parents made too much money that year for me to qualify for grants) to pay for housing, but it was off campus because it saved me $100/mo. It wasn't enough money for anything else so I was literally starving everyday, didn't have enough money for gas so I was house bound, and the housing was a run down house in the hood, and I lived with about 6 other students. No heat or air on my level so winter's were brutal. I had to get used to using two squares of toilet paper when I peed and just wash the pee off my hands hahaha! In the beginning, I took out no loans, and didn't get a job, so I lived with my parents and commuted 1 hr everyday to and from school. It ran my car down, and I was so tired I fell asleep in almost every class. Long story short, college did a number on me and after a couple of years in I dropped out because my mental health and financial situation took a turn for the worse. I walked away with no hair (because I cut it all off), 100 pounds heavier, $10,000 of debt, (now creeping towards $12,000), and suicidal depression. The good thing is I found out i have ADHD. and all this shit for an incomplete BA in visual communications (similar to graphic design) 😃 This isn't even the worse of what I went through, but I think you all can get the idea.

If youre going to college or university to find out what you want to do, DON'T PERIOD! you're wasting time, resources and money. I was a homeless college student. completely relied on the kindness of my friends and even strangers at times. Moving every 4 months was a pain but I got it down to a science. Even Bought a truck because I moved so much lol. Than, I got a gf and she took me in. Took me pretty much 7 years to graduate, but hey! When you are completely on your own by the age of 18, first generation college student, an immigrant and no parent income to help you, let’s just say I’m proud I made it.

I attended college during the fall to spring semester of 2019/2020 in the city of North Bay in Ontario, Canada. I didn’t have the funds to rent so a spent the semester in an RV, average winter temperatures were -14 ºC/6.8 ºF and the coldest night was -35.7 °C/-32.3 ºF in February. I had rigged the RV up with a wood stove which was my only saving grace from the cold but I didn’t have much firewood saved because of poor planning on my part. I had to search the nearby forest by the college for extra wood during downtime when I wasn’t studying or doing homework. It was a challenge and I often doubted that I would last, I even worried that I might freeze to death. I stayed persistent and tried to keep focused despite my anxieties and worries over my living accommodations and what the future might bring. I’m glad to say that despite everything I was able to earn a scholarship during the first half of my semester for academic excellence and managed to graduate from the course with a 3.7 GPA. Respect to anyone who has had to find and utilize alternative living methods while trying to make a better future for themselves.
