@@ESCTom Rafał Brzozowski two years ago was their pick without even National selections. He Has been their guy since beginning. He Has no talent but he Has a lot of connections. There is no democracy in our county. Everything is faked, propaganda is everywhere. U see TVP ruled entirely by government and TVN as opposing TV station to TVP and government (because IT is same shit). TVP aim at older viewers since our county getting old so we have more older people. They use church and religion as their ally because they know how religious older people are. They can do whatever they want. And the worst thing is fact that we have no other choice that would be good for our country. Since always IT was fight beetwen PiS (our government right now) and PO (their enemies). Its even hard to choose worse evil. But we need to somehow get rid of PiS at least for some years. One group cannot Control entire country for that long because they will turn democracy into totalitarianism....... And IT is happening right now. People needs to open their eyes.

Jann is going to benefit from this in the long run - a) Jann's going to be a "what if" artist without having to actually risk potentially underperforming at the Eurovision, b) Jann's got a massive local exposure, c) Jann now earned a dedicated fanbase and a robbed status.

I'm glad this case caught your attention. I think the most interesting point you made is the points system - Jann supposedly got 3 times more votes than Blanca, but it didn't change a thing. One of the reason Poles are frustrated is that a lot of people basically wasted money on voting for him. Good example of how it should be done is Finland's national final this year. Käärijä won the international jury vote, but even if he got 0 points from them, he would have won by a landslide, because he just annihilated the televote. It's just a shame that polish jury decided to send something more generic and radio friendly rather than giving a chance to a great young artist.

Jacob.. I have to wonder.. does his androgynous appearance and clear queerness work against him, giving the prevailing and increasing attitudes against Queer spectrum people in Poland? I mean it seems you are about one step behind Orban as this point, at least in this regard. It heartens we westerners to see the Poles get how critical the Ukraine situation is, while Orban isnt motivated by religious tenets the way the Poles are. He is a modern day Hitler in the making - he just doesnt have the national strength to pull the sort of thing Putin is. I personally didnt care for Jann's performance, though the song is quite interesting. I felt there were better performances than his.. and I wonder how rarely jurors remember it needs to be a slightly bigger picture thatn JUST THAT ONE time singing a 3 minute number.

We would choose a performance like this only with a free from the shade broadcaster. Like you heard in the video: Jann won the televoting with a huge margin and if the previous voting system would have stayed he would win cause of the big gap above the 2nd place in televoting. That shows you that actually it's the people in power, that are above us in our country create all the stereotypes about modern day Poland. Jann's performance was totally not something Europe would expect from us so I think that's what I'm sad about the most, that many people still gonna have a limited view for us and now maybe even worse view cause of what TVP did. Like I feel so ashamed for my country, I mean our broadcaster and the government that actually controls it. As the furore around this starts to settle down, the thing that really makes me angry about this is the fact that the televote results were never actually announced at the time. TVP, almost purposely, denied Jann his one moment of glory and celebration on the night. That is shocking and, in so many ways, hateful and disrespectful. It's now pretty much apparent that the sole remit of this show was to launch Blanka's career, to create a "face of modern Poland", much in the way Rafal is portrayed and promoted by TVP/Government. Why else would she, alone, have been able to preview/perform her song earlier on a number of TV shows? Why would her staging at the contest be little other than her own name in big CAPITAL letters? However, in the final moments of the result announcement, it was obvious that the entire crowd were shouting, really loudly, "Jann, Jann, Jann" - but he already KNEW the result, as did she. Both of them knew this was a sham and it takes me back to the orchestrated homophobia of the UK and other western counties back in the 70s, maybe 80s. Yes, you are there - but actually you're not how we want to be represented - thank you, goodbye. However, this might just be a defining moment.. Ironically, Blanka's career launch will now forever have a cloud hanging over it. Conversely views for Jann's official video are starting to go viral. Here's hoping Jann will maybe compete for another country next year Poland's reputation is shattered, In the space of 24 hours they have dropped in the bookies odds from 6th to 17th

On a far less formal note, I don't think Blanka was the worst singer at Poland's NF. Ahlena was definitely worse sounding with "Booty." Greece is in danger of disqualifying because of a similar situation. There was a voting between 3 songs, one of them got taken out by the artists themselves because it got leaked and the audience HATED IT with so much passion (actually all 3 were leaked) So the final two artists were Victor Vernicos and Melissa Mantzoukis. Melissa's song was the most popular by a mile. So, logically she would be our candidate. But the jury apparently voted her LAST. And even more bizarre they voted the song that was taken out, SECOND. And first ofcourse Victor (who is apparently the son and nephew of industry people). Also the voting system was supposed to be 8, 10, 12. But they went with 4 points being the lowest to 12 being the highest for none logical reasons. So THANKFULLY Melissa's team asked about full voting details but they refused. So she sued and the court is this week. If they manage to find a solution she should be our candidate OR we'll get disqualified because we'll have no representative before the deadline.

And how unfortunate that a Greek immigrant from Germany had to be treated like this by a corrupt Greek system. Greek immigrants have brought us our BEST results lately (Stefania and Amanda). The televote numbers for Jann and Blanka were debunked (someone messaged the journalist from whom they allegedly were taken and they said it's fake), but besides that this is an excellent video on the situation. More on the voting system changes: last year Ochman won the televote by a huge margin which led to his win because the ratio system was in place. If it wasn't there, Daria, who also had connections to TVP, would've won, since she was the jury winner. It just feels deeply frustrating and discouraging when your broadcaster specifically changes the rules on the spot so they can make sure it's their pick who wins at the end.

About Daria, the situation is eerily similar to Blanka: a radio girlybop hit with several million views, being promoted on TVP shows, jury winner. All this while Ochman was a pretty unanimous favourite among poles. I guess TVP learned from their "mistakes" and just made it impossible for non-approved artists to win, what a shame.

Thank you for this video! After our national final I listened to a podcast episode recorded by Radek Kobialko in 2021, after the now infamous Rafal's semi final performance. He organized the Polish preselections in 2016 and also worked on them in 2008. It was actually shocking to hear basically the same allegations as to what happened in Tu Bije Serce Europy this year. In 2008 apparently one of the judges in the jury straight up admitted that the points announced live on the show were made up and completely different from the ones that were agreed on by the jury. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case this year too. In 2016 the song was decided 100% by televote (thanks to Kobialko). During the selection of the 10 competing acts, apparently someone in TVP told Kobialko that they are not allowed to pick Michal Szpak or the preselections will not go ahead. Then during rehearsals the same person again said "remember, Michal Szpak is not allowed to win". In the end, Michal Szpak won and allegedly TVP was really mad because the broadcaster already had some kind of business obligations with a different artist. Someone in TVP said that "the public should not be allowed to choose the winner". Wouldn't be surprised if Daria was meant to win last year which is why they changed the rules again 4 days before the NF 🤷

Maybe the EBU should provide a few guidelines of how songs can be chosen fairly. That is not to say that a standard format should be used across the board, but that certain expectations have to be met in a country's choice of selection. So, that may include: 1 Stating that any televote outranks any jury vote. 2 Ratio points should be used rather than the 12-1 scoring. 3 Full disclosure on individual juror's scoring and full publication of televotes cast. 4 Jury panelists should not be permitted to express views that could influence the voting (to other panelists or the general public). The UK used to do this a lot in the not so distant past and viewing could be cringeworthy with the artists having to take-it without much recourse. Etc.

As much as it makes me happy that UMK is now cited as a prime example of how an NF should be like, this wasn't always the case. We've also had jury screwing public in the past, several times!! The prime example being when *Nightwish* (yes, Nightwish, the now world-famous band) was screwed by jury in 2000, they won televotes (new thing then) but jury placed them 3rd... So at the end, an insipid mediocre song "won" the combined vote, a travesty of what might have been! :( I voted for Nightwish and was so mad myself that I didn't watch Eurovision for 4 years after that ;) (Which I now hope Poles won't do, please be wiser than I was ;)) Another, more recent example is 2016, when also jury favourite won, despite a few better & more popular candidates. Televote points was divided in the Ranking system and it turns out that Nanne Grönvall won with about double the amount of televotes but still lost because the jury gave Martin Stenmarck more points, making it impossible to catch up. Absolutely bang on, Tom. All countries should adopt the ratio system for their national final, as it is absolutely not fair if there is a big margin of points that only gets turned into a 2 point lead and can be easily manipulated by juries. It is unbelievable to me that in the event of tiebreak that some countries favour jury decision rather than their own public - that just screams that it was rigged in the first place because what kind of fair system values a small group of music 'professionals' to the entire public of a country. It was also alleged last year that Benidorm jurors rigged their voting in favour of Chanel so that Tanxugueiras who received 71% of the Spanish televote did not win (Chanel had 4%)! All countries should be adopting the voting system of Melodifestivalen/MGP/UMK and if they are going to rig a national selection so hard then why not just internally select and be open about it?

This is SUCH a shame but I saw it a mile away. If you remember my comment from your video about Jann, I totally predicted there would be shenanigans with the voting. It’s a shame that Poland still has such an issue with right wing and conservative policies and fear anything subversive. I’m not sure how well you know this, but Poland is FULL of incredible art in all forms (literature, music, film, paintings, etc) and out of all the Slavic countries it has the most grandiose and spectacular art (in my opinion, as a Serb). You would never know this based on Eurovision or in general, because any person of value gets silenced. They have so many subversive and dark artists that criticize political oppression and celebrates freedom. Great filmmakers like Zhulawski who directed a completely maniacal and dark space opera in the 80s called On the Silver Globe (it was so controversial at the time that the ruling communist party wanted to chase him down and lock him in prison, but he managed to flee the country). Parts of the movie were never able to get made, but what’s left of it is a literal masterpiece. Then there is also Kieslowski who directed the Color trilogy, as well as the brilliant tv show Decalog, which is imo one of the greatest tv shows of all time. In fact, it was so influential and groundbreaking that it resulted in the death penalty being banned in Poland. I don’t think a television show ever had such influence on the hearts and minds of people in any country. Then there are soooo many incredible Polish musicians, so much metal and dark and ethnic music and don’t even get me started on literature which is just FILLED with philosophy and mythology like the Witcher series. And please check out the “nightmare artist” Zdislaw Bekinski - his paintings are absolutely stunning and heavily inspired by the horrors he experienced during WWII and subsequent communism in Poland. I’m sorry for rambling on, but I just love Poland and Polish people so much and there is such a negative stigma around the country due to crazy politicians and idiot right wingers. The country is just so full of rich history, folklore and ambitious artists who have always fought against the status quo in their art.

@@ESCTom Well I’m not sure to be honest. RTS (Serbia’s broadcaster) is relatively autonomous and isn’t a propaganda machine like TVP in Poland and funnily enough they do not even like or support president Vucic, so the winner won’t be influenced by politics for sure. Our jury also always tends to vote for whoever has the most potential at Eurovision regardless of who they are (Marija Serifovic won the jury vote by a landslide back in 2007 despite being openly lesbian and she is general highly respected in Serbia). On the other hand, there has been some backlash by the general public about Luke Black with him receiving tons of negative and homophobic comments by people calling him various slurs and accusing him of being a “witch”, a “satanist” and a “western puppet”. Imagine calling someone a witch in 2023 🥶 It would be pretty hilarious if it wasn’t sad to be honest. There is always heavy backlash whenever someone attempts to sing in English. The puppet comments are also quite asinine since unlike other established artist he has nobody supporting him (no production company or anything), he is basically doing everything himself. We will see what happens. He can be kind of hit or miss, but if he nails the staging I think the jury will really push for him to represent Serbia despite the naysayers (there will still be lots of lgbt people and just normal people in general who will vote for him and who will outweigh the crazy right wingers). If he flops though and someone else wins, then we’re kinda doomed since were in a much tougher semi 😂

Same happened to Slovenia in 2006 when Saša Lendero with song Mandoline won public vote with landslide but jury gave her 0. After that Slovenia never had good song at ESC. That year Slovenia didn't have any arena to host Eurovision next year like it happened to Azerbaijan in 2011. So jury gave top points to Anžej Dežan who had no chances to even get to finals. Public was furious on broadcaster. Check the song, please.

God, Tom, thank you so much for this video. This is exactly what I've been saying. There is absolutely no 50:50 split here. Also when you do the Ranking points system you NEVER get fair results, the results are ALWAYS skewed towards the preference of the jury. If it aligns with the public - great, if it doesn't - it essentially screws over any chances of the televote winner to go through and it is just unfair. That on its own I suppose can't be called rigging but it's just way too old-fashioned and obsolete of a way to do the voting... I believe no country should be using it (unless they have the superfinal implemented - that brings in fairness). However with this Polish national selection there was clear rigging. Let's say that the alleged televote points distribution is fake and let's say there wasn't really an article before the final - it is STILL rigged. There is really only one component you need to take into consideration to call it rigged - getting rid of the superfinal days before the actual final. The timing definitely aligns with Jann's song blowing up and becoming a fan-favorite. I was following his evolution - from a video with 235K his song reached over 600K in a matter of a week. He got at least 50K views each day. I know TVP saw this and saw the threat he posseses and that's why they decided to change something that was always there. It is clear rigging simply by this fact. Now you might wonder what exactly makes Jann so much worse than for example Ochman or anyone else who benefitted from the superfinal. Well... As awful as it is - it really is because he is effeminate. Whether he is LGBTQ+ or not doesnt matter because in the minds of the conservative polish society and broadcaster he is gay 100%. And they simply wouldn't have that... This is basically the WORST REASON EVER to screw someone over. This is blatant discrimination and homophobia. I urge any and all Poles to not back down and keep pushing against TVP. Yes, it might be futile but I want to know that we have at least tried to fight back. And if there is any way to make Eurovision itself intervene too - then please, we need that. Boycott this awful national final and get the results we deserve. I want to end this on another note though - Tom, what did you actually think of Jann's performance? For me, contrary to most people, I quite enjoyed it EXACTLY because it was manic and unhinged. I felt that it really fit the song well. I don't believe he is a bad vocalist, I think he wasn't even trying to sing it correctly, considering he even changed the tone and pitch at certain moments. Even changed the lyrics to a ...scream (that was truly iconic, I must say). Overall I loved it and how memeable it is, he deserved to win for me.

I thought the vocals were fine, there was definitely some breathiness in them and it wasn't perfect. But he had some really nice opera moments and falsettos, I think it was full of highs and lows. In terms of his performance I thought the kind of gymnastics that he was doing was really cool and despite the fact that he was on stage on his own with no dancers and almost no props, he still managed to make it very entertaining for three minutes. I think he's really talented and if he had the chance to work with someone like Sasha JB or one of the established staging people he would be able to do something really amazing. Also he definitely would've been able to do his originally intended oil/tar staging because he knew that the conservative public wouldn't like it

I think that Jann was the best and probably Poland national final wasn't fair but be careful about information you see on twitter. People are mad that Jann didn't win and his fans tend to overinterpret some facts. News on TVP website is probably draft prepared before competition and it shouldn't be considered as a serious proof. And we also don't know anything about Blanka's relationship with Edyta Górniak's son. He said in interview that he didn't meet her before. People are just suspecting because of this picture. I'm not defending TVP. I think it's something wrong with these selections and we should talk about it but still be fair with what we really know and what we only suspect.

Thank you for making this video. I didn't follow the Polish NF so when I saw the angry reaction from Poles online my initial reaction was to roll my eyes like oh Eurovision fans throwing a tantrum because their favorite didn't win. What else is new? I also remember them having similar conspiratorial rhetoric in 2016 when Michal Szpak got tanked by the juries in Eurovision so I didn't think much of it. But this case seem quite suspicious. Even if you're not up to something shady why would you not want to have an international jury over a national one? It's better in every way. Do they not realise that Polish juries can't vote for Poland in Eurovision? And I can't believe their juries are actually commenting on how they're going to vote. When you have shady stuff like this going on in your NF it makes sense how Poland was one of the countries involved in the other jury scandal we had last year. Instead of talking about a country that's starting to gain momentum in Eurovision with Ochman and Jann we're talking about cheating and jury scandals.
