Poland is changing. In 2015, the far-right Law and Justice party, or PiS, won both the presidential election and a slim parliamentary majority. Since then, they’ve been working to cement their power by firing judges, purging the military and civil service, and cracking down on protesters and the media. All of this has put the country on a collision course with the European Union that could threaten Europe’s hard-won peace and prosperity following centuries of conflict.
To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalists Sam Ellis and Liz Scheltens use maps to tell the story and chart their effects on foreign policy.

Two corrections: At 7:17 Viktor Orban is incorrectly described as President, when he is actually the Prime Minister. At 5:27 and 7:32 Finland is mislabeled as not being a member state of the European Union. Finland joined the EU in 1995.

Shocking facts. Poland in 39' was one of the most multinational and tolerant country in the world. Betreyed by allies, 1/4 of population killed by germans and soviets changed this country completely after II ww. Changing borders and moving people from Old polish land to "new polish land" moved Millions of people. This is how Poland went from multinational to mononational in very short time. So not knowing difference makes you to be afraid of it. This is how it works.

That is what happens when the trust of the nation is abused. This is what has happened now in America and Europe. The simultaneous abuses of trust (UK, America and Europe) is not by accident but by plan The plan manifests in political battles and western factions but it is a plan by the Muslim Brotherhood for the enemy to not identify them until it is too late. Europe is already being repopulated by non other than only Islam from African continent and Middle East. Ask yourself, if Merkel and Europe was so into helping people in need and true refugees why is there ZERO assistance given to real refugees from South East Asia, South America and Pacific? Distance is no issue as Planes and Ships do exists.

I'm from Poland and all of this is not so simple... Most of this video is unfortunately true, but not all. Before PiS the most important party was PO, and maybe our economy was rising and in statistics everything looked cool, but people were poor. PO was selling many on our companies to foreigners, there were a lot of financial scandals, courts were working veeeery slow and wrongfully, there was a lot of corruption... and people had enough of it. That's why PiS won election in 2015. They were promising to rise the lowest national payment, to take care about poor people, families, to solve problem wit our courts. But instead doing it carefully and wisely they ruined almost everything in our country and just gave people money to make them happy. But they did also few good things (not many but still). And i'ts not like that Tusk and PO is cool and we want them to rule again. Most people hate both PiS and PO. PiS is doing a lot of evil things but PO just never did anything good. PO is just lesser evil. And last Sunday we had presidential election and Andrzej Duda from PiS had 51,03% and Rafał Trzaskowski from PO had 48,97%. And that perfectly is showing how our country is divided and in Poland we call this situation "Polish-Polish war" and it's just showing that we cant work together to make Poland better place... and all of it makes me really sad :( I love my country, but living here is sometimes very painfull.

Poland is country with 1000 years of history. We`ve been occupied by nazism and comunism in the way that any other country ever has experienced. We were secound country in the world with its own constitution, we havent conquered "third world" for colonies and slaves as western countries did, finaly we have refused to cooperate with Hitler in his way to conquer Soviets, waiting for promissed help from UK and France that never came.... as for current times: EU is leaded by unelected people (Juncker, european commision), they worship A. Spinelli (comunist), there are either socialists or comunists in EU parliament... so who you are to teach us YOUR democracy and tell us how to live? We vote, we work, most uf us belive in God and dont want smart asses as you are to tell us what to do. Hitler and Stalin failed do you think your poor Macron or Merkel will achive that? PS: as for current situation with our judiciary... many judges are from socialism times, no removal system for currupted judges sofar. Why do you worry about polish legal system if majority comes from EU and polish goverment obey that low. Notice that regulations about polish justiciary are outside of EU jurisdiction (british protocol). Why do you worry about Poland, what do you know about this country and Poles to trust you that you care so much.. show me which article of constitution is broken. Current goverment is far from beeing perfect but its elected by Poles and will be changed sooner or later by Poles as well, so please dont send your "tanks" to teach us democracy...

You can't have it both ways. You either join and take part or you stay outside the union and do your own thing. Let's remember that no one forced any of these countries to join the EU. And with the U.K the Brexit referendum was one by a very small margin, so much so that it has literally divided the nation. But that's a topic for another day. It seems that even in Poland there is somewhat of an ideological divide. You've got this far-right ruling party that's anti EU yet vast numbers of Poles have found work and even more meaning lives across EU countries. It seems that it's not as black and white as everyone makes it out to be.

Well, for anyone trying to associate this video, with any racist ideology coming out from poland I've got the following to say. --- I'm portuguese, but I look alot like an Arab. ---- I lived in poland for 6 months, and not even once, did I feel unwelcomed there. I used to eat every day in a vietnamese restaurant, and I saw the polish people highly respecting them, and loving their food. Every polish person I had a relation with, being the supermarket lady that laughed when I made chicken noises to explain I wanted kurczak, when I still didn't know the language well enough, to the guy that rented me his apartment and took me to partys, took me around town (twierdza modlin) and gave me rides to work. Every single person I met treated me with respect. Every country in the world has bad intentioned people. But please don't lable polish people as ignorant and intolerant, cause they are quite the oposite. I worked as a flight attendant, so I interacted with more than 400 polish people a day. Europeans, take my word for it, polish people are very friendly. And altough I decided to return to Portugal, I still miss Poland every single day.

Z całym szacunkiem, co Unia zrobiła Rosji ? Co NATO zrobiło Rosji ? Nic. Polska pomaga Putinowi. Destabilizacja zachodu i Unii Europejskiej ? Komu to jest na rękę ? Putinowi. A Putin Polsce. Wojna z Ukrainą ? Komu to jest na rękę ? Polsce. Kaczyński znajdzie kolejny pretekst do wzbudzenia nienawiści w rządnych krwi emerytach i znowu wygra wybory. Actually, It was an ilegal vote by Spanish constitution and had no real value, the police intervention was justified, but not the level of aggression used. In order to make a vote for Catalonian Independence, by Spanish constitution, you should referendum all Spain: Are you ok with doing a referendum regarding Catalonian independence? Yes or no. Then if total count vote comes out aa yes, the catalonians themselves could vote if they want to be independent. It's strange but that's how it works. It's like you want to get out of your house and be independent but in order to do so, you first need to wait for a vote of your mom, dad and brothers/sisters to decide if you can go, really weird.

As a person living in Poland, the great majority of people celebrate our independece, while there are some hateful groups that go out with these sorts of terrible message, tarnishing the name of our country. People who spread these hateful messeges are kicked out of the march of independence. But yeah VOX, thank you for spreading misinformation, acting as if all polish people are racists, when in reality, they just want to proudly celebrate being polish - no matter what skin color you have, you ARE STILL WELCOME in Poland, remember that. @@eliza1826 I'll tell you why. Everything's connected to economy. Basically European Union gave us Poles a lot in a way of opening markets, findings and freedom of movement BUT there is always BUT these factors also have some profound consequences like ... thanks to freedom of movement more people left Poland in search of better wages so countries like Ireland, the UK and Germany were among the best earning places. Moreover freedom of commerce allowed many companies in Poland to export theirs wares. It is a good thing yes but not many realise that most of our exports to the western European Union states are in fact intermediate and agricultural products so when the main product is finally created it is sold much more expensive than the intermediate products sold by Polish people. The main profit stays in countries like Germany and so on. Those were just a few of reasons why Poles emigrate nowadays. I'm sure I can tell you more about it if you are interested.
