She was born in Lipno, Poland. Her mother was Polish noblewoman and father a Gipsy from what is now Slovakia. In Lipno they still show where her father made brass roofs.

The host introduces Ms. Negri (from a room in an airport in Riems, curiously) as one of the last great film divas of their time. (She also says she'd refused a crazy amount of money--presumably to appear on TV in the US, but her response becomes a bit hard to make out at this point, since she falls into a kind of nervous chuckle.) After that, there's an exchange of pleasantries with Schell, with the two women claiming to be honored to meet one another. The host then breaks in to ask Ms. Negri if she could share any of her memories of filming Mazurka, since it's a film they hold especially dear. It's possible she--whether due to tiredness or just as a result of losing the thread of the conversation--didn't follow this, since she essentially ignores this request, instead saying she is honored and delighted to be back in Germany, since Germany has always brought her luck. She then gets up and walks off. (I almost wonder if she just kinda [politely] cut them short. The more I think about it, the more I suspect that maybe they cornered her and weaseled their way into a TV interview she wasn't too keen to give.)

Even though l don't understand German l had gathered that the interview ended rather abruptly, and l think you are right that perhaps Miss Negri had not expected the TV cameras and having been put on the spot simply decided she had given enough of her time and left.

Ach, czy to wazna pochodzenie? Romka, Zydówka, Litwinka?. Przed wojna tyle tych pochodzen bylo...po co to wyciagac na wierzch. Jej ojciec byl ze Slowacji Romem. Ale ona juz wychowana jako Polka. Zyla w luksusie, prawie cale dlugie swoje bujne zycie. Na tamte czasy urocza i taka ladna odwazna dziewczyna z Polski wyjechala w swiat. W Niemczech zrobila kariere, posluguje sie tym jezykiem nawet w 1959 roku. W USA tez bawila sie wybornie. Pola Negri jak to dumnie brzmi.Tyle lat minelo a jej nazwisko takie pamietne.🌹
