    I've dabbled on showdown but have never been to a tournament. From a spectator POV, a big part of watching VGC is the commentators guiding you through the complexity of high level Pokémon and explaining the "if he had done x" scenario or the "he really wants x but opponent really wants y". It keeps the viewer informed of the drama and stakes of the situation. Without an established format, I question if the viewing experience will feel like the best of the best of people who know what they're doing versus a chaotic "I don't know what this Pokémon is here for, I guess we'll wait and see"

  • @boaz-n-hoaz

    @boaz-n-hoaz

    Жыл бұрын

    This is why Aaron Zheng is so good as a commentator, his pokemon knowledge is so exceptional he can normally guess why a pokemon is on a team based on what the pokemon itself can do and its teammates, and with open teamsheets you can see moves too so it'll be even easier for players to work out what their opponent wants to do based on the move sets chosen

    I have been on the verge of going all in on VGC as a hobby and committing to attending multiple events for several months now, and have planned on doing so at the start of next year, but is stuff like this that has always pushed me away. Acessability is a big deal, and while I have the time and ability to grind my skills and attend events, I dread having to figure out getting the right mons and the right IVs. Also more importantantly this is a slap on the face to all the players that have been refining and perfecting their teams for worlds. I think this worlds is going to be sorely lacking because of that.

  • @marjoramme
    @marjoramme Жыл бұрын

    While I'm still excited to play Regulation D and I certainly think it will be fun, the qualms I have with the format are about accessibility. This generation has done a pretty amazing job of making it incredibly easy to feel involved with VGC, but now they've made it almost impossible to build the team that you want unless you have HOME, Legends Arceues, Sword/Shield, as well as the expansion passes. I'm fortunate enough to have them myself, but people who are newer to the series have really been hung out to dry because of this, and I imagine (and honestly kinda hope) a decrease in turnout for Regulation D events will help Pokémon understand this wasn't a super elegant way to move forward with their multiplayer format

    I skipped generation 8 due to other things coming around, and now that I'm trying to get back into pokemon again it feels legitimately just pay to win at this point. Something worth noting is with kleavor (stone axe) and samurott-h (ceaseless edge) you have pokemon that can attack and set up stealth rock or spikes to break focus sash or sturdy in the back or to chip for harder hitting mons. Maybe they won't be strong enough to use compared to the remaining home mons coming in, but just thought that would be worth mentioning as very new tools to VGC

    i think one of the coolest parts of worlds is seeing a ton of amazing narratives converge for instance, rinya sun was one of my favorite stories to follow, seeing its crazy dominance and pervasiveness throughout the year, watching the adaptations that people made like weakness policy zard was just really cool. it's also a crazy storyline to see davide carrere beat rinya kobayashi himself with his team comp. stuff like that just gets me super hyped. stuff like wolfe's own 2016 run, which found a way to dissect a omnipresent big 6 team and address the other threats in the format with a really cool team comp, that narrative was a huge part of why that win felt special. i doubt the team would've been as cool if it was just a guy noticing that some mons are strong. i got most into vgc in 2022, and eduardo cunha's win was very cool to me because of the way his team looked and how it actually played. i hadn't watched the archetype in action before, i assume it was relatively rare, and it was intriguing to watch this bulky, pivot-centric positional offense take command of what i saw as a more offensive, fast-paced metagame. even if something 'boring' like swordfish had won worlds in 2022, i'd still appreciate the storyline of someone using swordfish and conquering people's attempts to counter it. vgc is the best to me when people have time to manifest their visions for the game, and i can follow a story line. this format just feels like it'll lack a lot of context. it'll be like skipping to the last chapter in a book we never got the chance to read. i won't say it sucks, but i want what we could've had.

By the time I find a team I'm interested in building, the time investment it would take to actually assemble that team given the fact that I work 35-40 hours a week just isn't worth it when the rules are just gonna change again in a couple weeks. As someone who plays ladder but primarily enjoys competitive by watching tournaments, I’m definitely upset both as a player and a viewer. I didn’t start playing competitively until scarlet/violet so now I am essentially forced to use rental teams because I don’t have access to these new OP Pokémon. As a viewer, most of my enjoyment comes from seeing the metas develop. Watching you win a regional with a TR team and Joe win with a sun team we’re highlights of my viewing experience, and it seems now that these unique teams are completely off the table. Watching a tourney with every team consisting of genies, eleki, and a handful of other OU Pokémon seriously dampens my excitement to watch.

Never even got dlc for sword/shield and I don’t even have zacian cuz I have shield (don’t ask me why lol). I think I’m split on how I feel as a viewer. On one hand I agree with your point, it’s not as interesting when 80% of teams are running genies and regieleki, but I somewhat enjoy watchig high power meta games. Like 2016 might have been pretty stagnant with the megas and primals but competitively one of my favorite years cuz the power scale was gigantic. Same with 2019. Having Pokemon you can't obtain in game is just a bad move in general. Even if you have them from previous games, they might not have the right IVs, EVs etc. and you need to go through a lengthy process to change them up that may involve playing an old game. Not to mention that many of the legendaries where obtained in an online mode that leaves you with dumb NPCs now, and it's a long grind...

    I’ve wanted to play VGC for a few years now. I started trying out the ladder late into Regulation A. None of my things were really competitive ready, namely the fact they had all been wild captures with random IVs. And as the regulations shifted, I kept feeling farther behind. When C rolled around and I got to experience the Ruin Pokémon, I decided to stop for now and finish getting them myself and start trying to breed things up. With Home (and the fact I don’t own SwSh DLC), I think I’ll probably have to tap out and stick to watching again. I just feel too far behind right now.

    This has been my experience, even as someone who has experience with breeding. I'd spend weeks brainstorming and tweaking an original team idea, another few days putting it together, and get maybe a month of play with that team before a new regulation was sprung on everyone and I had to start over. It's not fun, and it's hard to get practice in and figure out what I need to work on with gameplay/teambuilding when I barely have enough time to playtest in game before my team is outdated. When the Ruin Pokemon got added I basically gave up, hoping that the changes would at least slow down... well, at least now all they have left to add is restricteds.

    @@swissgoat4981 Thinking about the meta in terms of Pokemon is intuitive, but is inaccurate. Because Flutter Mane was never banned in VGC, we got to see its sets evolve dramatically throughout the months. In the beginning everyone was running speedy frail with sash, then people shifted to bulky to beat mirrors. Now we see almost no sash and mostly booster energy. The tera types were also changing, before everyone ran fairy but now there are some steel and water tera as well to adapt against Chien-Pao and Palafin. If you see the game in terms of sets instead of mons, the game becomes a lot more interesting. Singles never got to see the evolution of Flutter Mane sets because it got banned immediately, so people had no time to see the full potential of it either.

    I've only dabbled with the vgc format a bit myself but I do watch a lot. I definitely like seeing the newer pokemon in a regional format shine before all of the legendaries get dumped in the game. I can't help but think that the skipping of the regional dex format is because of the terrifying pace that the Pokemon company is churning out new pokemon games. Specifically everything about Pokemon lately has been rushed and its hard to keep up with the pace of everything- the games themselves and trying to keep up with different meta games. You're a real soldier for keeping up with Pokemon and the vgc format on top of all the KZread stuff you do.

    The need for new formats is an entirely constructed problem though - in previous years we'd start with a format equivalent to Regulation C for the whole year. DLC essentially adding new Pokémon means that the next year gets to be the "National Dex" format of the second year and the year after is GS Cup - changing the format so often is a new problem in itself that TPCi brought on itself independently of GF's short dev cycles

    I think this cripples them for future worlds. The life cycle of this game will be long enough to where they're obligated to keep releasing dlc to make any new competitively viable pokemon enter the format. It also just feels like the last series of sword and shield repeated, where you have to struggle to fit in mons that are amazing just because the power creep is so high. I like when you build teams around mons like grassy glide rillaboom, not struggle to find a place on your team for it. We're not going to have a single worlds where there's a lot of scarlet and violet mons running around. Doesn't that seem bad for the game?

    Variety in competitive pokemon comes (largely) from different sets and spreads on the best pokemon. The idea that because legendary pokemon are used, variety is dead, is just... categorically untrue. Being able to use a bad mon isn't an indication of variety, it's just an indication of the format's power level, but regardless of power level each format will have its dominant picks that will centralise the metagame around them. Smogon singles lower tiers is a good example of how even when you use bad pokemon, a couple are inevitably going to stand out and discourage worse pokemon from being used. Ironically enough it's often the bad pokemon that have the *least* variety in their sets because they typically fill only one niche and can never really successfully do anything outside of that, see Murkrow as an example.

Quickly dashed when they released the reg D rules lol. I just wish the Hisui mons could have their time in the spotlight because they’ve never been part of a VGC-legal game before. Like you highlighted, lots of them have great potential in a non-legendary format that is probably not there when legendaries do exist. Personally I love the genies, excited for Cress, etc. but I wanted them to bring them in more slowly. Didn’t realise how close we are to Worlds either. That’s so little time to get used to a drastically different format. It will be fun to watch as a spectator but I don’t envy you guys prepping for it.

It would be really cool to see the sun and E-Terrain teams that we got with that. And MAYBE allow Hisuian Pokemon. But allowing all the sub-legendaries from past gens is just a little too far and too much for a Regulation change just before Worlds. Especially since it doesn't even include the region's main legendaries. I was expecting we'd essentially get an unlock of the whole region for Worlds, not other region's legendaries.

With the addition of Home, the best mons from the past are going to do what they’ve always done for generations (Lando-T, Cres, etc.) and the meta is going to form around them. Yes, there were more teams than that but mostly they bubbled around top 4-8 and the top 2 were moderately static. The last few regional events I think there was starting to be a bit of a breakout to more innovative team compositions. I think dropping the mon included in Reg D onto the meta will a) make for extremely different teams than what we have seen all year ('Yay!' variety) and b) make a lot of the teams look like they're from 2022, which excites me far less.

From the perspective of a casual player, I actually had been waiting for an update like this to try and dig in and play more. Maybe not the most popular opinion, but the inclusion of Ursaluna is actually motivating me to build a team around it because I like the Pokemon so much, with my goal being to join competitions starting after this World Championships. Yes I'll be behind in terms of power since I've been mainly a casual player until now, but now I get to compete using one of my favorite Pokemon, which is way more motivating than I had felt at any point previously while watching VGC competitions.

Right now it’s Chi-Yu / Ting-Lu + Flutter Mane, we’ll be back to Landorud T + Regieleki on most team. I don’t know if there’s ever been a format like the first one for S/V where teams had a lot of variety. - Maybe it’s an opportunity for a content creator / a group of content creator / a group of competitors to host an intermediary league in order for the format to develop before worlds? Looking forward to seeing you win the championship regardless.

    I haven’t been into competitive Pokémon since ORAS, but finally took the dive back into SV a few weeks ago after watching Wolfey’s videos of him using a Flamigo to destroy standard VGC teams a few months back. I’ve had a lot of fun and was considering going to a regional just for the fun of it, which I’ve never done before. TBH legendaries kinda ruin the experience for me(which is why I didn’t want to play in SS era), and I was hoping for the Meta to stay where it was because when legendaries aren’t involved, people rely more on goofy, wild strategy that is fun to see and makes the competitive scene enjoyable and innovative rather than broken legendary drab. I was running a team with a trick room Oranguru because I wanted to use a favorite Pokémon and make it work in VGC, which was completely doable. IMO the new rules will slaughter the fun of VGC because it’ll just be the same robotic legendary team vs another, and will dissuade newcomers or casual competitors like me from getting into VGC community. I don’t know if people agree with me but that’s my take.

I was excited to use some strats with hisuain mons but I'll skip that since the well known sub legendaries will just dominate the meta all over the place. Still fun to create your own team with mons that players with rental teams never heard of but this wears of quickly if you have to play against the same teams over and over again. That's just a major letdown for me in VGC while the pokedex is so rich with all sort of mons to explore.

I had a lot of fun in Regulation A where I managed to get to rank 552 on the ladder using non-meta, self-built teams and I wanted to get back into VGC. This has done nothing but kill any and all will I had to play. I started playing VGC lightly at the end of SwSh and I quickly grew an absolute seething hatred for Landorus-T, and judging by the speed we're flying through these regulations we'll also end up with the twin devilspawn that are Groudon/Kyogre soon enough and it'll continue to reduce the amount of actually viable mons to bring. We barely even had enough time in Regulation A to explore more complex compositions because everyone was running Mouseape/Gholdengo/Tatsudozo teams and in hind sight, there were far more ways we could have played against those compositions but they added the Paradox mons so quickly that there was no time to experiment. Early pokemon metas are the most fun because it rewards creativity a lot of the time. I dunno, maybe I'm one of the casual people who enjoys low power levels and everyone else just wants it to be like the end of SwSh where you just have legendaries bump heads like action figures with a fraction of thought put in because you can just brute force shit instead of having elaborate plans.

    Greninja gets Battle Bond which boosts it's speed and sp. atk. at once, so I wouldn't say it sucks. It's pretty capable with Grimmsnarl actually. Also, Super Fang + Fake Out + Drain Punch + Wood Hammer/Leech Seed Chesnaught with Tera is pretty good too IMO.

    You raised a good point about some arceus mons being a pain to get. Leaks suggest no but there could be a couple spots where Enamorous could show in PoGo maybe

    I am so sick of seeing legendaries. They limit team building so much because you either need to run them or you need to run their counters, which in most cases is another legendary.

    17:05 I would say this is the only take here I disagree with, for 1 reason only- dire claw this might be the most broken move ever. 80 power 100% accurate With a 50!! percent chance to sleep, para, or poison All on a mon with 120 base speed. Its not gonna be an offensive threat but as a support mon dire claw immediately gives it a niche.

    you somehow allways manage to make an entertaining competetive pokemon video. I personally play competetive with just one of my friends and I don't really intend on changing that (too stressful for me). I'm excited to see the meta develop, it may be a bit too overpowered but with the power creep being this high in this generation majority of pokemon would have been hard to use anyway. And at least I get to see how the hisuian forms will develop.

    as a ex-competitive player i am interested but apprehensive to how this is going to go. I always watch worlds anyway and usually some big tourneys throughout the year so it doesn't change much for me, but it's always sad to see the competitors unhappy with a change

    I really hope enamorus turns out to be useless, because the rest of the pokemon have some other way of obtaining them, I've looked into enamorus, you need to replay the entire game to soft reset for ivs, so getting a low attack one is going to suck, or god forbid you need 0 speed as well because you're running the slow form.

    You just save before you catch it, and reset if the IVs aren't what you want...And having low attack isn't actually that relevent, despite what Smogon like to think.

    I feel like with bringing back pokemon like the genies and cresselia they're just making it the same format as every other generation with very minor changes. I really wish they had just brought in the hisuian mons and maybe some non legendaries. Cresselia, genies etc. makes it feel like sword and shield over again.
