There is definitely a line where performance is so bad that it severely hampers one's ability to enjoy the game, and regrettably this game very much crosses it.
@raze2012_

@@webbowser8834 I agree it's bad but I also am kinda tired of "but BOTW/TOTK" counterarguments. They are made by a different studio in a different timeline (We got FIVE mainline games + 3 DLC packs between BOTW/TOTK. Gen 8, 9, LGPE, BDSP, Legends Arceus. All except BDSP made in-house) with different tech that is clearly now shared, under different dev studios with different sizes. The only thing they share is a publisher. It's been 7 years, I think by now we just accept that BOTW was an exception and not the norm given how 95% of other 3d switch games have had optimization issues. Possible =/= feasible, and it's clearly not feasible for most studios to optimize for switch.

@@shinken6636 Having actually played Pokemon Diamond, and rather extensively at that, the first half of that is simply not true. You had the slow health bar drain at high levels (which mostly only impacted endgame play) and you had the infamous "saving a lot of data" thing if you so much as dared to look at your box at any point during your play session, but otherwise the game ran pretty quickly and you rarely have to see a loading screen. You could even turn off in battle animations to make the game run even quicker. Your second argument is a bit ambiguous, as you could be referring to the original, Japanese only release of gen 1 Red/Green or the gen 1 remakes Fire Red and Leaf Green, released during the gen 3 era. The original Red and Green games were *incredibly* buggy but were also released roughly 30 years ago and was the first game in the series, so being less buggy than an infamously buggy 30 year old game really isn't the level of quality me and others are looking for. Meanwhile, Fire Red and Leaf Green really weren't all that buggy at all. Clipping was borderline nonexistent and you can't really do that by accident. Animation bugs basically didn't happen because they were simpler. And the game ran pretty smoothly to boot. Simply put, it is perfectly reasonable for folks to expect better from The Pokemon Company. The fact people are asking for better does not take away any enjoyment you got/are getting from playing the game, but your enjoyment of the game does not invalidate other people's criticisms.

Honestly it's insane how unoptimized the games are, but it's even crazier to me how inconsistent the performance seems to be between so many people. Lots of people are getting the 5fps and movie long loading times, while others seem to just be getting occasional stutters by some miracle. I seem to be on the better end of it, the DLC only hitched a few times for me without much issues otherwise, but looking at yours and others gameplay it's like we're playing entirely different games. I'd understand this if it was a PC game or something and everyone had different setups, but on a console with basically zero hardware upgrades over its lifespan I feel like there shouldn't be this much variance. Kinda impressive in its own way just how broken things must be underneath it all.

It's worth remembering that Satoru Iwata was able to optimize and compress files for Pokemon Gold and Silver to the point that they could fit *the entire Kanto region* into the game. Since his death, Nintendo as a whole has been going downhill in both quality and care for its players.

It's also worth remembering that this has been debunked, and while Iwata did write new optimization for G/S, it wasn't to compress data - in fact, it increased the size of the game - but what it did was allow for faster decompression of the compressed assets. An optimization of a different sort, but don't get the old myth rumor twisted. In the meantime, we're a long ways from that time, Iwata's passing didn't change how The Pokemon Company operates, and what we can easily blame them for should not be laid at the feet of the rest of Nintendo. As even Scott says up above, we JUST had Tears of the Kingdom, and by god these are not the same Switch game. But I've said it before and I'll say it again - this is an innovation year for TPC. Whenever it comes time for there to be another gen, I expect it'll be this level of gameplay but polished to a fine shine, and people will be happier for it. It's always tough in these portions where they're focusing on updating the gameplay; but I promise you, when we get to that time, people will instead be complaining about how "oh it's the same game over and over but a little bit of QOL improvement" - we've had this cycle before.

yeah, I brought out my level 40 something Goldhengo as a "starter" (because I didn't evolve that dude until after I became champion) and otherwise caught all new pokemon in Kitamari. Completely kicked my ass, I loved it. The Orge clan were actually making me reconsider typings, movesets, and ev spreads since they actually seemed to be fully invested builds and I didn't wanna overlevel. And for reference, that Goldhengo was like, lv. 73 by the time I finished. I didn't use any candy, just grinded it as I filled out the pokedex an mowed down trainers.
I didn’t think to much of Perrin at first, but after I played the main story line and came back her, I enjoyed her refreshing and cheerful attitude a lot more than Carmine’s who was always being … uh yeah. Also the Pokémon you catch in her storyline looks sick and by the time it was all over I was sad she had to go cause I really liked her by then.
I feel like every new female character in pokemon is super attractive and appealing. Like, perrin is very cute

"We got a remix of Eterna forest!" Ya.... ya mean the same remix that plays in Legends Arceus? I distinctly remember hearing that music in Legends Arceus in the forested area around Klevor's arena.
Ogrepon is the best! I love her so much. I am more attached to her than my starter. I also got a new team made of Pokémon I always wanted to use and new Pokémon from the DLC.
They could literally sell a box of rocks with the Pokemon logo on it, break every previous sales record, and there'd still be people saying "well that's the free market!"
The hide guide option when using the camera got removed in the update so now you cant video pokemon.
Perrin is.... Very nice. Very. Gotta love her. 👀 Her quest line was honestly awesome and was the best, no lie at all! It just also helps that her character design is *chef's kiss*. Love that she was a reference to Pokemon Arceus.

I agree with your opinions here. I also loved Scarlet and Violet’s gameplay, and the stuff the DLC added was fun. I was playing super casually, going through and making a Living Kitakami Dex, and I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store with Indigo Disk. With that said, yeah, the performance is inexcusable. I agree that Game Freak doesn’t really know how to optimize. What I really think Game Freak needs (in addition to a good team for optimization) is more time. They could get away with three year development cycles up to the 3DS, but apart from Let’s Go, three years is just not enough time for HD Pokémon games. If anything, they need at least four. I get that the Pokémon brand is big and having to wait longer for new games hurts the bottom line. But for the sake of quality, they need to do one of three things: slow down and allow more development time, allow other studios to make mainline entries (a la remakes or Legends style) while GF gets more time to work on the next gen, or fund more and bigger spin-offs to keep the brand relevant while not demanding new core series content every year. Ultimately, I think it comes down to time. My final opinion, though: I don’t think the comparison with Tears of the Kingdom is very fair. TotK was built on the same amazingly optimized engine as BotW, and both had 6 years of development time each. I get the point of the comparison, but still…
I went through the entire DLC with a raid-ready level 100 Azumarill and the only challenge I had with it was with the Ogrepon battle since it's 4 Tera phases. Twas really fun! Loved finally unlocking the Itemfinder badge for my boy!
How the heck is it that I’m the only one who hasn’t had any performance issues!?
To this day I can't figure out what dictates the extent of the horror for various people. Watching this video just reminded me that, while the game is poorly optimized, some people are hit SO much worse by it. I've seen the videos online filled with glitches and hangups and bugs that I have never experienced a single time in my game and I've been playing a lot of both Scarlet and Violet since the games came out. The rumor had it that installing the game on the SD card vs internal memory is what made the difference, but it seems that got debunked and indeed I've found no difference either way myself. It's just a fascinating mystery - what could possibly be the hidden troll element in the equation?

Same. The game always runs a bit janky, but I haven't been hit with, say, 30 second load times just for walking out of the community center. (The only thing I can think of - altho I obviously haven't rigorously tested it - is that I've always got a desk fan trained on the docked Switch to keep it cooler, and I have noticed, in not Pokemon but Animal Crossing, that the game runs better if you keep the Switch cooler...)

Personally I enjoyed it, mostly for the reasons you pointed out. Both of the Sibs had good character development, and the story was amazing! Though I do agree with the move animation thing... That would make it faster to shiny hunt. Maybe they'll add it in the next dlc.
Sounds like somebody is loading the entire sandbox every time you enter it
I was hoping to have an outing with the gang of friends we made in Paldea Nemona, Arven and Penny just hanging out and getting into little adventures as a breather after the main story.
Huh, I finished the DLC last night and I encountered nowhere near as many bugs and lag issues as you did. Maybe there was a patch between when you finished it and I did, or maybe I just got lucky. The only lag I noticed was in some of the battles where there were more than the usual number of entities on screen (ie people in the background cheering or what not), which is still inexcusable. I will say, I really love Ogerpon's design, it's absolutely adorable. To each their own I guess.

@@trickstertwister612 It honestly could be any number of factors, but whatever it is, it really should have been fixed long before the game / DLC released. I liked the DLC so far, the story was actually very interesting and the characters weren't insufferable. I did have a bit more fun using a shiny team that I hunted for in the new area, making the fights memorable since my team was at around the same level. Also, I love Ogerpon and I will protect her with my life. But I agree with what you said, the game definitely felt like the performance have gotten worse with the dlc added. I had so many moments when I thought the game would crash on me, especially in the crystal lake area. I'm happy to have new Pokemon to shiny hunt, but I wouldn't really recommend the dlc until the second part comes out. And I really wish they would stop shiny locking legendary Pokemon, it makes me care less about getting them since I probably won't use them on my team since I only use shiny Pokemon.
I like the small details like shiny dipplins syrup bomb being gold and not red and morpeko eating when switching from hangry to full belly mode
Man, where have I seen that smile on the thumbnail before...? *remembers "Do the Evolution" by Pearl Jam* Oh.

They also fixed a bug where for Mass Outbreaks, only the base form would spawn regardless of the form displayed on the map. Not really DLC specific either, but a welcome change, other than the fact resetting for outbreaks is now laggier and sometimes doesn’t load properly

Performance aside, The Teal Mask honestly exceeded my expectations a little. Compared to the Isle of Armor, it had a lot more going for it as a Part 1 DLC. My only complaint (again, excluding performance) is that I really wish you could just jump into a random Ogre Oustin' lobby with strangers without a link code. That would make it a pretty fun alternative way to get Herba Mystica if you ever get sick of grinding raids. Also, I'm really glad they're keeping strong with the character writing! I genuinely think Scarlet and Violet have the best characters (or at least the best rivals) of any main series game. At the very least they're on par with Black and White. Really refreshing after the previous 2 new-gen games basically had the same rival except the second one got sad. I like Hau and Hop but I can't deny they were kinda flat...
Literally beat this entire thing in like 5 hours
1:35 I this was my first time watching Scott's streams and I am so glad I was able to be in the video for a second with my patented: ! In all seriousness I had a great time just watching the stream the first day!! So thanks for streaming it scott
The problem with the optimization is that the game is too far done to simply "fix". They would most likely need a team to rewrite how the game loads things from the ground up, thoroughly test it to make sure it works properly, and make sure these changes to the game's most fundamental level of code don't break anything farther down the list. And that's all for a game that's been out for almost a full year now. I don't want Game Freak to leave the series, since it kinda needs their creative spark to stay good (coughBDSP), but it's clear that their vision for the games is a poor fit for both their dev capabilities and their release schedule. Best case scenario, they collaborate with another studio that's more familiar with making the open-world gameplay they seem to want to go for.
It is worth $0. Nobody should be paying extra to makes these games the definitive version of themselves. Ya know, you sell me something unfinished at full price, I expect the rest to come later at no charge. It happened last gen, and now it's happening again, but worse because it's $5 more AND it makes the performance run worse. It stuns me that people defend this. Are they going to have to add pronouns into the game to finally make a Pokémon game's profits buckle? This is the dumb timeline we live in.
Jesus CHRIST I did not know the digital copy was running that poorly with the DLC. The only place I ever got any type of lag was around Apple Hills and the regular "takes forever to do anything in a Raid because its a fucking Raid" nonsense but that's because I've been playing a physical copy. Holy hell. How the fuck do they fuck up that badly if its not a hard copy? Technical issues aside, seriously I did NOT know it was that horrific, I think you hit it with most of the rest of this. I definitely agree about Perrin, I love how relatable she is and I really loved her side quest. Bloodmoon Ursaluna is now one of my favorite pokemon just for how much of a unit he is. I hope we learn more about her in the second half of the DLC though or she shows up in future games. I like that she's clearly descended from both Irida and Adaman even if the latter's genes beat the former's out. Great vid as always, even if you had to suffer with that terrible framerate and pop in the whole time. Hopefully Indigo Disk is better but not holding my breath.
this game really makes you Feel like youre going 100% speed slower
Game Freak, PLEASE You guys have ALL the money, just optimize your games, FFS
Seeing the issues of lag and bugs I honestly must of been lucky because I didn't have the long load in's or the laggy sections happen to me, the loading the environment and stuff pop in when a cutscene happened yeah I had that but Jesus seeing how bad people had it makes me feel bad for them, granted outside of the story (which honestly at this point it's only worth the DLC for that and the pokemon themselves) i would honestly compare this to the first half of the Sword and Shield DLC: The Isle of Armour not a lot to do but there was loads of space with...barely anything in it. I'd give it 6.5 out of 10 only because of the story and characters alone.
They made the boxes faster that memory had to go SOMEWHERE. Monkey's paw.
0:22 With a side of SALT 😂
I really enjoyed Scarlet. I'm always a sucker for new creative Mon designs (Fidough, Sandy Shocks, Clodsire, Toedscruel I love you guys), the story was honestly suprisingly good and the characters were great. But the performance and visual bugs totally destroyed the game for me. Also didn't help that the region just didn't feel Spanish at all imo. I hope they take their time for Gen X, but I doubt it

As you said, It doesn't mean that not happens, that game was utterly broken, but some times you're in luck. Not that S/V was broken as cyberpunk too, the problems I have with this game are more in the stylistic choice they gone with.

I saw some guy point out a Japanese website for employees to rate their experiences at a company. Weirdly enough, Gamefreak gets really high reviews from its design and art team, but really low reviews from its programming team.
After playing the DLC, most of the content everyone shows is optional. Not once did I learn what the camera girl was all about or find Blood Moon Ursaluna. Shame that had to be the case… Also you need to catch 150 Kitakami to even learn about the camera girl in the first place. And here I was thinking you can learn more about her without having to do anything like the DLC videos depicted.
Lets not forget the festival, the big thing featured in most marketing of the dlc, being 6 stands half of them copypasted between each other
Idk how but I had almost no issues with lag aside maybe the occasional lag spike next to water

I found a glitched spot on Oni Mountain where I clipped through the wall. Not sure how, but I did.
Another fix they did was they fixed the loading speed of the Pokédex. Before this if you scrolled through really fast, the proper pages wouldn’t load right unless you stopped scrolling. Now when you scroll it keeps up and loads the proper pages correctly.
You have to admit, bit comforting that the *adult gal* got so much fan attention.
