Game Freak thought this was going to be the last Pokémon game, and they clearly poured their heart and soul into it. The day-night/weekday exclusive stuff, the radio, the fact you could visit Kanto. Not sure where all this gen 2 hate came from but it’s definitely from people who weren’t there on release, absolutely blown away by what Game Freak had pulled off.

I was there on release and I was the child equivalent of pissed off when there were suddenly more Pokémon after I caught them all in gen 1. Didn't touch Pokémon again until Go took over the planet

My father bought the famous Pokemon Crystal when i was 9 or 10. I was so excited but could not get out of the house for weeks cause i did not see the damn fuckin door mat 🤣🤣 Being stuck in Mahogany town for almost 1/2 year, wasting my masterball on Rhydon, solo-ing the elite four and Red with Lugia only. The experience was truly magical

Gen 2 has the most memorable moment of any of the gameboy pokemon games. "You've taken your first step into Kanto." The music right there hits hard.

Crystal was the first game to have Pokémon with animated sprites

For some reason pokemon Crystal gave me a feeling inside that I can't explain. The day and night cycle made me really feel like I was on an adventure and when I would stay up late to play it on the weekend I would get to experience the night!!!! So much fun!!!

Crystal is honestly my favourite game. After I bought Red, Yellow, Gold (even though I wanted Silver and Lugia more, but the store didn't have it 🙁) Crystal came along and I managed to play it for 350 or so hours. Completing the Pokédex, getting everything for my room, trading and battling with friends. What a time to be 10 years old 🥰

As a kid, the only thing I remember about Pokemon Crystal was the moving sprites.

To this day, I STILL have had more hours logged in Pokémon Crystal than I have in any other video game.

I remember the first time I played and was like “what? It moved!” When a Pokémon appeared. No game will ever give me that feeling again.

Gen 2 will always be my favorite! Peak Pokemon. I wish some of the younger fans could’ve experienced the Pokemon fever between the late 90’s-early 00’s. What a time to be alive.

Crystal has the best music in the entire series. There's this weird, ethereal vibe to almost every track. The Lake of Rage theme has always been my very favorite Pokemon theme of all.

$15 at a local game store in case anyone was wondering.

Anytime I see anything Pokémon Crystal related it just gives me this sense of nostalgia that I can’t replicate. Game is so under appreciated. Definitely one of those “you had to be there”. Not that you can’t replay it but when it was considered new. I’m just rambling but I love that game ❤

So nostalgic. I love the beep boops of the first 2 gens. The way surf sounds in this game is just pure bliss.

Gen 2 has some of the best music all time in Pokemon history. The original Ecruteak City music and National Park music is iconic.

“Sold horribly and doesn’t get talked about a lot” is a bigger stretch than if I stepped across the Grand Canyon. Sold almost as many copies as emerald and has a rerelease on 3ds and one coming to switch. On top of that crystal nostalgia is in its hay day right now being talked about more than ever since it’s release. Edit: coming to switch soon is an assumption on my part based on the fact they recently released the gbc emulator for switch. Could be wrong but I doubt Nintendo would pass up on the opportunity to charge people monthly to play a game they made 20 years ago.

Forgot to mention that instead of catching 3 dogs with roar and run away, you have to only catch 2 now (1 with master ball), so basically 1 now

I loved crystal. Something about 2 games in one really did it for me as a kid. I spent countless hours in emerald trying to figure out now to get back to Kanto or Johto until I realized that wasn't a thing

Not only that, but Entei and Raikou have their own shared theme when you find them in the wild, plus the odd egg you get from the daycare on your first visit which gives you a 14% chance of hatching a shiny baby pokemon!

Since most matches are played on Showdown, the animations don’t play there.

Definitely one of the most memorable soundtracks in gaming

I remember wanting a pokemin crystal as kid like nothing else - the very game where pokemons started moving.

I never knew that Crystal sold terribly. But after hearing that, I now see why that was the game that came packaged with specific GBAs. And that's actually how I got my original copy. I had Silver for a couple years before I got Crystal and fell in love all over again with gen 2 shortly after starting up my next adventure through Johto. It's easily my favorite gen and game in the series, and the one video game I have so many amazing memories with. I wish I could go back and play it once more with a fresh mind.

That’s mainly because it sold 6 million copies and did not sell terribly by any stretch of the imagination. It also has two rereleases on switch and 3ds. I’m really confused why people act like the definitive edition games sell poorly when they consistently sell around 5-10 million copies. Yes that’s not as much as the average main release but that’s an insane amount of sales for a glorified update. Imagine if any other game rereleased the same game with bug fixes and minor improvements and it sold half as many copies as the original release, who would consider that to have sold terribly?

dang i had those games too, but only played platinum & emerald, i beat emerald but most my hours went into platinum as for the other two they were just sitting in my gba case

Gen 2 is my favorite. I got my save battery replaced on my childhood silver and completed the full dex at age 35. Childhood dream complete.

I loved crystal more than gold and I remember seeing these animations for the first time. They may be simple, but at the time they were the coolest thing I'd ever seen

Pokemon Crystal is like my Favorite Pokemon game, so it's nice to see it get some attention!

I'd say because sprite animations have them in a suspended pose that highlights their character. The 3D models don't do this, which makes them lifeless. The 3D models would need to have better default poses.

Crystal was the second pokemon game ive ever played, and i got to say it might be my favorite, you can see how much love was put into it from the start and to this day it is still impressive how much soul they've manage to squeeze into that tiny cartridge.

I. Love. Crystal. I still have my cartridge here somewhere! That game's Battle Tower was exactly what I needed for endless entertainment! The sprites, the Suicune sidequest, and the tiny extra details gave me genuine joy that another game didn't replicate until HG/SS. (Looking at you, Pokeathalon.)

@@ArtisChronicles - Please let me know how you did! I struggled with anything past Lv 20 floor. I remember my Lv 10 team still: Jolteon, Raichu, Vaporeon (Gold Berry). As long as Raichu stayed alive to Body Slam Blissey, I could handle most of the rest!

This game was phenomenal if you also had the first Gen games and could trade. Playing crystal with first Gen pokemon was so cool.

Dang, the music ALWAYS gets me. I miss being a kid listening to this, I replayed the hell out of Pokemon Crystal and have so much memories.

I always loved crystal as a kid because of the cartridge color. It also gives me strong nostalgia.

National Park is one of my favorite tracks from GSC

Finding the dogs was the funnest and nerve racking part. Knowing you couldn’t just save and find them again.

Still have my cartridge copy from my youth. And recently picked up a Japanese copy and the digital copy before the 3ds eShop closed. Such a good game

Crystal were my favorite since the First moment I saw the animations. You forgot to mention the story. It's the First game with a legendary storyline (and my favorite part: It does not involve the end of the world) And I can't reinforce how beautiful this soundtrack is.

This was my favorite gbc Pokémon game. I remember playing gen 1 when I was a kid and being so into the game, then g/s came out and I was like okay..nice. But then crystal..I remember being a kid and picking up my gameboy copy at a local Walmart and being so amazed when the sprites moved. Still my favorite original gameboy color game of all time.

How anyone can cuss down crystal is criminal it was and still is one of the greatest Pokémon games developed and paying the same price for it 20 years later is still justified !

This is by waaaaaaay far my favorite Pokémon game. I remember playing it on my way home in the school bus. I’m actually playing it again.

Pokemon Crystal was the very first Pokemon Game I finished with no help from my older brother. This game was an absolute blast when I was in 6th grade, and I absolutely steamrolled by Whitney and Claire. I remember my final team in that game was Typhlosion, Magmar, Fearow, shiny Gyarados, Jolteon, and the Trade Machop I got in Goldenrod AFTER I beat Whitney.

crystal was my first pokemon game and the first video game i have ever played when i was a kid at 8 years old, still to this day, i think crystal has the best sprites for every pokemon that was available back then at least.

Pokemon Crystal was my childhood. Too bad the battery sucked.

This was my first pokemon game ever and remains my favorite. An absolute classic that will never be topped.

Despite all of it's shortcomings, Pokemon Crystal will always be a favorite of mine. It was my first ever pokemon game, and is forever the game that introduced me to my favorite pokemon of all time. I have way too many good memories with this game to put it down ❤

My godfather bought me Crystal for Christmas so we did our part. The best thing about it was being able to teach Flamethrower for the first time

Still my favorite game out of the entire series to this day. Time to listen to a Pokemon Crystal music compilation to bring back the nostalgia.

Can't believe I was 7 when this came out. I almost started crying when the music started playing. The days of having no responsibilities.

Because it sucks. The level curve is horrible, you spend half of your time grinding, the story is garbage and the pseudo-open world ruins any kind of level progression

That's true but it's more about the essence of Pokemon for me, it's a really good sweet point imo for the number of Pokemon, legendaries, etc. But to each their own. I've never thought of story when it comes to Pokemon. They all are pretty garbage.

Level progression is perfect actually since the game is really huge and it keeps you from over-leveling your pokemon just enough so you have to keep facing challenges.

I grew up with Crystal and still own a copy to this day, but not once did I notice Hitmontop's eyebrows. I nearly spit out my coffee when I saw it because it just looked hilarious to me, like there's an implication he's waiting for you to catch

When gen2 came out, we felt it was so immersive. Crystal took it that much further. It was always #1 IMO. Played it for YEARS.

What a fantastic game. The sprites in Crystal are unrivalled and unmatched, as well as the attacks. When you get hit by a Cross Chop, you feel the instensity, something that the newer games lack.

I love this game so much I once emulated some enhanced version and then my save got messed up in blackthorn so I just played through again, probably my favorite pokemon game because of the art, music, and fun early game (past cherrygrove)

I never owned gold or silver, but I did own Crystal. As my entry into Gen 2 it defined a gold standard of Pokemon games that i still adhere to to this day. It's fantastic now, just as it was back then.

I can literally listen to gen 2 sound track all day. Looking at those sprites and heating those songs is cathartic almost

The sprite for Sandshrew is probably my favorite. It rubs it's eyes/face in the cutest way!! Not to mention it's the first time you can chose your gender, which is awesome.

I didn't realize crystal was bad to warrant 'another chance'. Just always remember it being the favorite sibling of the gold/silver games.

I never played crystal as a kid but I always thought suicune was soooo badass. Eventually I was able to buy a Japanese copy of Pokémon crystal from this cool anime/game store in Japan!!

OG G/S/C specifically have some of my favorite themes in the whole franchise. It has an almost classical vibe to everything. The surf theme is an example of a theme in those games that goes inexplicably hard.

I remember being 9-10 years old using dial up internet looking for new Pokemon because rumors at recess at school was that a new Pokemon game was coming out. The 90s and early 2000s were so simple

I’ll never understand why we had to wait until Emerald to get moving sprites again after this game. That, to me, was the coolest part.

As someone who is doing a Crystal playthrough, I can't agree more. With team of Feraligatr, Granbull, Forretress, Growlithe, Electrode and Haunter, the game is quite easy, but I'm just about to finish the radio tower event and I know, there will be more challenging fights ahead. Like he said, give Crystal another chance, it's worth it. (And who doesn't like Johto :D)

Can we imagine what Pokémon crystal could have looked like as a full fledge snes title. Part of me wishes Pokémon stuck with sprites. And went all out with the 2-2.5D perspective. So much charm and nostalgia in these old games!

Crystal was and still is my favourite pokemon game

Playing this on GBA was unreal as a kid, I maintain Crystal will always be my favorite game.

There’s a rom hack out now called Pokémon Crystal Legacy. It adds challenge (even a hard mode) and fixed all of Gen-2’s major flaws, while keeping it true to the feel of the vanilla game. Big recommend. Mod creator had a how to install video on channel and it was very easy to follow. I figured it out in maybe 20 minutes tops

Gold, silver and crystal are my first ever games and I still play them to this day I’m glad I picked them up again before the E shop closed

Crystal was the introduction to gen2, it holds a special place in my heart

Crystal was my JAM 💃🏻 I spent so many hours on it, and then replayed it at least two more times, endgame Kanto was so satisfying ❤

Pokemon Crystal was the best childhood game and still holds up today (playing on my analogue pocket) ❤️
