Poisoning Paradise - Ecocide New Zealand - Festival Version

This New Zealand film has won 4 international environmental awards - but here in NZ, TV channels refuse to play it. Why? Because if they did, there would be outrage and riots over New Zealand's use of aerially applied 1080 poison. See for yourself ...

The unfortunate, poisoned dog on the documentary was part of a study undertaken in America in the 1950's or 60's. Scientists were researching the effects of 1080 poison on canines. They filmed the study, and part of the footage was supplied to us, and it appeared in Poisoning Paradise. Yes - the footage is disturbing. It's nothing less than an atrocity - what is taking place in New Zealand - with regard to aerial 1080 poison use. The aerial drops are increasing, and the Government and its poisoning agencies have declared they intend to continue aerial poison drops until 2050, and until they've killed every "pest". Their dream is called Predator Free 2050. Lets hope they come to their senses before there's nothing left to "save"..

What do you mean by 'before there's nothing left to save"? The very goal, and the effect, of the 1080 drops is to prevent predator populations from overrunning native wildlife. Many different scientific reports show that 1080 drops positively impact bird populations. Why spout meaningless rhetoric?

Ok, still no response from Clyde Graf to my challenge on the validity of his claim that this film has actually "won 4 international environmental awards". I wonder if Mr Graf thinks that ignoring the challenge means he can keep telling the lie. Some facts: 1. On the GrafBoys "Poisoning Paradise" page (www.thegrafboys.org/poisoning-paradise.html) there is a list of the film festivals where the film has been entered with various claims of "Selected" and "Nominated". Note that the majority of the films festivals were scams operated by Binda Singh (see: forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/926994). 2. "Winner" is claimed for one of those scam festivals (International Film Festival Ireland) so how can it be a winner? 3. The other "Winner" (yes, that makes TWO so far) is for the Reel Earth festival. A search through that website reveals no such win. Indeed this is the ONLY film festival listed on the Graf web page that has a viable link and lists many other winners dating back to 2010. So in the space of a few lines the tally of "Winner" awards has gone from four to two to zero. I'll let the FACTS speak for themselves in the question of who is telling the lies.

I think it is a fair call: follow the evidence and you can find they paid to enter a film festival or two (where every film received a complementary award). It really shows the extent of the Grafs' character... There are two types of people: the ones that follow the evidence and exclude the bullshit (like Duncan) and the ones that just love the echo chamber they belong to (like the Grafs).

Poisoning Paradise - Ecocide New Zealand was entered into the Environment and Ecology category at the Swansea Bay Film Festival, in the UK. "We anticipated resistance to the film in this country" said Clyde Graf, who co-produced - directed the film with his brother Steve, "however, we underestimated just how strong that resistance would be." The Graf's believe the film will raise awareness around the world, and will attract more focused attention into the use of 1080 poison in New Zealand. "We might finally get some unclouded, international scrutiny into this obscene practice of mass animal cruelty, and contamination that, up until now, has been concealed by the walls of our forests." Mr. Graf went on to say. Poisoning Paradise is awaiting nomination in 7 other international film festivals.

Sad to see this has so few views. I commend you Graf lads for having the courage to go out there and see the horrors of 1080 first hand. There's parts of this country I deliberately avoid because of 1080, which is rather sad and frustrating. I'm amazed at how irresponsible and inconsiderate DOC are. I've read of two occasions when hikers have had 1080 rain down on them, and also witnessed a mass spraying operation, with no warning signs on a well used track whatsoever. There were actually two school groups walking up towards the area being sprayed.

I have just come back from a camping trip on Canaan Downs, an area where 1080 has been regularly applied. The birdlife was outstanding: Tits, Tui/Bellbirds, Fantails - all the usual suspects plus the Robins and Parakeets as well as the Moreporks. The huge number of insect eaters indicates that the insect population is doing well. I participated in an ongoing survey of Falcons in Kaiangaroa Forest, in the North Island, again an area that was subject to regular 1080 drops. We saw 25 different Falcons in a four day period, another indicator that the birdlife was doing well. Too many people only see what they want to see, or not to see.

This video triggered a memory i have which is linked to the topic. In 2005 while on outward bound in the marlborough sounds, we stayed the night on Tawhitinui island and were tasked with capturing a handful (about 7 or 8) Weka using nets. I rem ed mber asking the guy from DOC why we were doing it and he replied that they were poisoning the entire island and everything would die so they needed to take a couple weka off the island to re-introduce later. these assholes were knowingly killing a huge proportion of the Weka population and knew it would happen!!!

  • @pwollerman

    @pwollerman

    7 жыл бұрын

So WHY were hey poisoning on the island? Obviously not for fun. Did you not think to ask? The depth of knowledge in 2005 was nothing like the level they have attained now - the 1080 process is fine-tuned to minimise by-kill, but as in any process accidents and unexpected outcomes will still happen, but there's now exact drops using GPS, modified baits that are much less toxic, coloured green to discourage birds and with added deer-repellant as a sop to the hunters who believe their sport is more important that our endemic wildlife and far better management and technologies. 1080 is water-soluble and breaks down rapidly - but does accumulate in mammals, creating a hazard of secondary poisoning to dogs who are not properly controlled. All that has come from having to learn about 1080 because it is banned in most countries with a mammalian native population - New Zealand is one of very few places that do not, 80 million years developing in isolation so there is very little knowledge available from elsewhere. And yet the principal objectors still base the bulk of their arguments on incidents 5, 10 or even 15 years ago when some bad outcomes were created - heavily dosed carrot baits being dumped in absurd quantities, etc. And worse, DOC management was stupid enough to try to cover it up - creating a huge hump in public opinion to overcome - and an easy target for anyone wishing to paint them as liars. But it is no longer relevant - although a good story because it plays directly to people's prejudices. No longer is there any excuse for that sort of stuff because the science has been advanced and techniques vastly improved as a result of experimentation, observation and drawing lessons to improve their technologies and techniques as well as management. The biggest problem now is that the ministry charged with spending our tax dollars on conservation is not only underfunded but undermined by ill-informed self-interested parties. That would be OK, but species WILL BECOME EXTINCT while their delaying tactics hinder DOC fulfilling their obligations to New Zealanders and the planet And Kiwis used to practical, fair-minded folk who cared for wildlife - I guess that was in the past before even back-country boys and women fell for the commercial interests working to undermine DOC. Thanks, Guys, I look forward to telling my grandchildren why they can never hear the sort of Dawn Chorus I fell in love with as a child, but they are free to go out and shoot deer because the place is overrun with them. Something we can all be proud of there...

Although several previous reports have described the clinical course and outcome of patients who ingested this drug, prognostic indicators of short-term survival are not available. Methods: A retrospective study of 38 consecutive cases of sodium monofluoroacetate poisoning at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital, 1988-1993, to analyze the clinical findings and to predict mortality. Results: Seven of 38 patients (18%) died. The most common symptom was nausea or vomiting (74%). The most frequent ECG finding was nonspecific ST-T and T wave abnormalities (72%). Hypocalcemia (42%) and hypokalemia (65%) were the common electrolyte abnormalities. The clinical and laboratory characteristics were compared for the survival and mortality groups. Significant differences in hypotension, respiratory rate, pulse rate, creatinine, potassium, elevated alanine aminotransferase, pH, PC02, APACHE II score, and subjective respiratory distress were noted. Discriminant analysis identified hypotension, increased serum creatinine, and decreased pH as the most important predictors of mortality, with sensitivity of 86% and specificity of 96%. Conclusions: Hypotension and the early onset of metabolic acidosis and increased serum creatinine are associated with poor short-term survival.

Well it's 2020, and the "game" is not "over", as this scientist was confident it would be by 2019. Furthermore, with the use of technology delivery methods have greatly improved, and are continuing to do so. DOC no longer uses small carrot baits, almost no carrot baits in aerial drops at all, except in some open areas to target rabbits. They are conducting studies with a new and promising toxin known as PAPP. Aerial drops of 1080 are highly precise operations. The amount of 1080 delivered per hectare has reduced from over 20kg/ha in the mid-70s to just 1-2kg/ha today. Deer repellant has been added to the cereal baits, which has significantly reduced bycatch. Focusing on the cost of aerial vs ground 1080 use/trapping, is simply sensationalist. Roughly 95% of Fiordland, for instance, has never felt the weight of a human foot. Ground methods are simply not practical or even possible in many of NZs regions. This video, whilst I believe was made with good intention, is quite sensationalist. My personal opinion on 1080 was formed by openly looking at all the evidence available, and there does very much appear to be a net benefit to the use of 1080 via the current methods, which have certainly improved in leaps and bounds since the start of 1080 use, or even since the making of this film in 2009. Here's a 2014 film kzread.info/dash/bejne/q4eYu9CGYLfMYbw.html&ab_channel=OSPRI; still 6 years old, but more recent than this one, and is more even in its approach. My advice is to take these videos in, then delve into various recent studies - both government-run and independent - with other concrete and anecdotal evidence, and judge from an overall position. Just remember, no one is saying 1080 is "good". No one. But it is the best we have at the moment. If we do nothing, our endemic birdlife will be completely gone in short order.

I am not a New Zealander, but I feel I have to make a comment here about what is happening in your country. What we are seeing here is terrifying. Alien species have been introduced to the islands, some accidentally, some deliberately. Our species response when we realise the error that ocurred is to launch into a program of what is quite simply genocide. We have to understand that if anyone thinks this activity is legitimate, then you must intrinsically agree with the holocaust process in World War 2. Furthermore, such individuals should see that the introduction of the European to the islands is in essence the same phenomena, where we have drastically altered the ecology and natural processes that would have occurred. Then by nature, it quickly follows that the extermination of Europeans descendants in New Zealand is entirely appropriate for the sake of the indigineous Maori. It is also fundamental that every animal, plant, or living thing, has the basic right to life, procreation, and survival. Indigineous or not. These are very basic rules of nature. Nature itself will take care of any abberations. It is ceertainly not the right of our species to play God with other species lives, and decide whether they are worthy of existence. Lets be quite honest here, which species is the greatest 'pest' on this planet ?

We have travelled to many of New Zealand's forests - most of them, in fact. We've filmed the poisoned and non-poisoned. On all occasions, the non-poisoned forests are better for birdlife. In some cases the poisoned ones are a disaster. Just look at the number of kea that are dying after aerial drops. Robins are decimated. Other small insectivorous birds are also negatively affected by the pesticide - insecticide (that also causes secondary poisoning). The best way to manage wild animals is to target them directly, not poison the entire ecosystem. Dr Jan Wright (PCE) flew us to Wellington as part of her "investigation" into 1080. She stated, in front of her staff, and us, that the reason she was doing her report (just after ERMA had done theirs) was because of Poisoning Paradise. People can see the truth, rather than hear the industry scientists try to say what isn't really true. If a scientist speaks out against 1080 in NZ, they lose their job. Once again, check out www.1080science.co.nz

zeissOholic Yes, the statement I made was a bit extreme, and ridiculous. But that was the point I was trying to make. That poisoning the ground with 1080 seems to be cracking a nut with a sledgehammer. I am not there, I am not a New Zealander, and therefore I respectfully bow to opposing arguments like those posed here by Mikey Watson, who obviously has more knowledge on the subject than I could ever have. My angst stems from the fact that non-indigineous species have been introduced by humans who have come to the islands, in many cases deliberately introduced, only to find that at some later date, when humans have decided they are unwanted, they are exterminated wholesale. Even animals we have labelled as pests have as equal a right to live and proliferate as we do. I wonder how the human race would feel if dinosaurs were to make a miraculous re-appearance, and assign our species as unwanted pests ?

"A wandering dog has been blamed for the deaths of at least five kiwi in what is believed to be a series of attacks in the Ōkaihau area over the last fortnight, adding to an increasingly grim tally of Kiwi deaths across Northland. The dead birds were found in the Signals Rd area, off Waiare Rd, opposite the Ōkaihau golf course, which provides access to a number of lifestyle properties and farms backing on to the Aratoro Conservation Area, which is connected by an almost unbroken corridor of bush to Northland's biggest native forest, Puketi. Department of Conservation spokeswoman Abigail Monteith confirmed the deaths of five kiwi were being investigated. Details were still limited, but the injuries were consistent with dog attacks, she said, adding that the department was saddened by the loss of the birds. Monteith said dog owners had a responsibility to keep their pets under control at all" And, dogs don't kill Kiwi?

From 1990 to 2018, the Department of Conservation recorded 345 kiwi killed by dogs in the North Island alone, with a further 86 likely to have been killed by dogs. Recent studies have shown dogs and ferrets are the main predator of adult kiwi around the country said Jess Scrimgeour, who oversees DOC’s Kiwi Recovery Group. Free avian aversion training sessions are held around New Zealand for dogs that will be taken to places where they could encounter kiwi, and dogs that live on land near kiwi habitats. “The better we are doing with predator control, the more contact there will be between kiwi and domestic pets,” Carson said. Comments and observations from Bruce Reid and Don Sullivan who have been hunting for the South Island Kokako for the last 5 years. Independent of DOC and the government: The scent of damp leaf-litter is thick in the air, already dense with the chattering of kākā, pīwakawaka and other native birds. The one near Saxon Point was quite amazing with what it hit on it. Not kōkako yet, but kiwi, lots of deer, even a takahe,” Bruce says. Not only that, but over the five years he and Don have been searching, they have been recording almost in real-time the effects of DOC pest control programmes. “From the early cameras we put out two years ago, we're not seeing anywhere near the same number of rats or mice - because they did a 1080 drop, and it’s amazing to see the difference,” he says. “That one camera at Saxon, I didn’t see a single rodent. I keep feeding that data to DOC. It definitely has had an effect.”

Sue Boyde I'd have to disagree, some might argue that it is in fact DOC that is committing treason by its very actions killing the protected species and doing it in such a way that would be shocking to most other 'civilized' nations on the planet. The information presented by DOC is extremely bias towards their views. I have never seen or heard of a film or interview on TV involving DOC that had representation from both sides of the argument. It's believe what they tell us or nothing and that isn't very democratic. I say spread the word about 1080 world wide, because then it might actually stop.

This was harrowing but it needs to be watched. Of course we also know now in 2021 that the govt has had additional motives for the systematic poisoning of our land, our living creatures, our waterways and our people. Depopulation, the removal of people off the land and into high density urban areas so as to be easier to control and surveil, the total economic ruin of agricultural and farming family-run small and medium businesses, widespread legislative changes which make it nearly impossible for people who rely on the land to live, to do this without having to use chemicals and gm seeds from bayer/monsanto - this ALL ties in with the 1080 POISON. They have almost destroyed any option of people living off the land, being resourceful, feeding our families, and being independent, with pride. Once the people are dependant on the corrupt govt for food, water and shelter, they can control us completely. We need to wake up and start fighting back against this tyranny. A good documentary shows both sides of the story. This documentary doesn't even pretend to show the other side of the 1080 debate.
