Things are strange right now. The dollar is becoming less valuable because of inflation, but it's getting stronger compared to other currencies and things like gold and property. People are turning to the dollar because they think it's safer. I'm worried about my retirement savings of about $420,000 losing value because of high inflation. Where else can we keep our money?

Due to my demanding job, I lack the time to thoroughly assess my investments and analyze individual stocks. Consequently, for the past seven years, I have enlisted the services of a fiduciary who actively manages my portfolio to adapt to the current market conditions. This strategy has allowed me to navigate the financial landscape successfully, making informed decisions on when to buy and sell. Perhaps you should consider a similar approach.

The question is how to convert your salary into the investment funnel without double taxation. you pay taxes once it's earned, then buy stocks etc and get taxed again once you sell for gains. 0.13 per cent of Canadians would pay higher taxes on their capital gains. Only a small share of corporations will be affected, noting in the budget that 12.6 per cent of corporations had capital gains in 2022 Pretending this is a "catastrophe" is deeply ignorant or dishonest. Crime is rampant, homelessness and drug abuse through the roof, housing crisis, social programs near collapse, immigration rates that exacerbate these issues and a government with a spending problem who have amassed a deficit larger than all other governments combined. The banks, many economists and even two former liberal finance ministers all agree that Trudeau’s policies are driving inflation. Terrible handling of Covid, lying about how taxes work to our face while digging in our pockets, terrible foreign policy, multiple scandals, blocked investigations or investigating themselves and membership that has very likely committed treason. You can thank PP for that and his ilk along with neo liberals that were indifferent to and benefited greatly from real estate developers and the real estate industry being one of the biggest lobbyists in Canada. And how they have great influence on government polices regarding regulating the industry to how cities are zoned and how many are actively rigged to prevent new supply that is needed the most. What has Poilievre put forward to deal with REITs? I could take you to suburbs in Vancouver and show you quite a few lots zoned for low multi-dwelling low rises that had permits issued to them two years ago, but nothing started or torn down on them yet oodles of lots zoned for single houses with construction starting as soon as the permits are issued. Housing developers drool over lots zoned for single homes; not so much for multi-dwelling low rises. More money for them to be made on lots zoned for single family homes and buying up single family homes. Second to that is delaying building on lots zoned for multi-dwellings. Don’t kid yourself, developers money still floods the political system, but not like it used to in BC yet they and the real estate industry still benefit when a municipality is “reluctant” to allow land to be developed in cities where speculative investing is rampant that benefits speculative investors like PP. Where was PP when there were no limits on the amount of money that development corporations could supply to political parties? Developers are not the same developers of what we have seen in the past like that of the 70s and 80s; a whole different animal now thank to polices created by economic conservatives in both parties. It’s no secret that there is no lack of developers withholding undeveloped properties from the market in anticipation of greater future gains and want to keep it that way. There is more than one reason why it is not required by developers to build when they are issued permits by governments.

Construction companies are not getting capital gains as their primary income. If a house flipper is earning 500k per year then he is doing very well and can afford new taxes. How are doctors getting capital gains? This is not that big of a deal. They shouldbe attacking spending. That is the biggest problem in canada.

I only know two billionaires and I go out with one of them for fish and chips in the summers that owns a brewery that has no issue admitting the percentage of his income that he pays in taxes in the end has plummeted over the last 35 years and credits/thanks the economic conservatives for that. He told me he paid an overall lower tax rate than the warehouse staff at his brewery, which have double the tax burden even after tax credits and deductions are taken into account. I wasn’t surprised, as I already knew that most richest of the rich in Canada don’t make most of their money from payroll and the taxes overall they pay on their declared income is at a rate lower than the average worker.

The great middle class post WWII would not have existed without taxation and massive investment from government. Middle class is being dimminshed because it no longer gets the required massive investment from governments like it used to, which unfortunately was substantially reduced due to the policies that stemmed from supply side economics and its failed trickle down strategy that actually bleeds the bottom in order to sustain growth at the top draining broad prosperity. The greatest wealthiest known middle class ever was created by governments and unions under capitalism in North America. This middle class is what funded innovations and most of the technological advances in its day that many of them we take for granted everyday; they were not funded by the biggest corporations or monopolistic outfits, which have been getting their losses and failures socialized for decades by mostly the middle and upper middle class, and these outfits are a far cry from being innovative as they were before corporate welfare became the norm.

The problem now is there is a growing indifference towards mortgage holders that became holders about 8 or more years ago, as a large segment of society is getting tired of welfare for mortgagers - homeowners with mortgages have been stealing from renters and savers since 2008 with their low inflation and cheap money/insanely low interest rates. Not many feel for a person that bought a 2nd property for an investment vehicle or summer home that now has increased in value by three fold or more that now has to have a little over half of the captial gains subject to taxation when they sell it.

The relationship between wages, productivity, and employment in Canada is a complex one. Stagnant wages for both employers and temporary workers have been a topic of concern in recent years. However, the causality between these wage trends and productivity levels is not straightforward. According to Statistics Canada, productivity growth in Canada has been relatively sluggish since the late 1990s (Statistics Canada, 2021). During this period, real hourly compensation for employees grew at an average annual rate of only 1.3%, while labor productivity increased by an average of 1.5% per year (Statistics Canada, 2021). This shows that wage growth has not kept pace with productivity growth in Canada. Temporary workers make up a significant portion of the Canadian workforce. According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, there were approximately 1.4 million temporary workers in Canada as of 2019, representing about 9% of the total labor force (CCPA, 2020). The wages paid to temporary workers are often lower than those paid to permanent employees (CCPA, 2020). This wage disparity leads to lower morale and motivation among temporary workers, potentially impacting their performance on the job (Brown et al., 2018).and forces down wages for the permanent workers in canadian business . Moreover, stagnant wages for employers also negatively affects productivity. When employers are unable to pay competitive wages to attract and retain skilled workers, they are forced to rely on less experienced or less qualified employees (CBC News, 2018). This results in decreased productivity due to the learning curve associated with new hires and/or the need for additional training and supervision However, it is essential to note that correlation does not imply causation. While there is evidence suggesting a link between stagnant wages and decreased productivity by Canadians, it is not clear that one directly causes the other. Other factors such as technological change, skill mismatches in the labor market, and economic conditions also play a role in determining both wage levels and productivity growth in Canada (Baldwin-Edwards & Fanelli, 2017).

Poilievre has an awful lot of opinions on various topics. I'll bet this never happened to him though. Several years ago, while living in South Africa, I found an orphaned rhinoceros while camping. I brought him round to the cottage to show my wife and she loved him. Unfortunately we found out my wife had the wrong sized teats for suckling an animal of this size. He probably would have starved to death but I came up with the idea of killing him for food. There is a reason they are known as the veal of the savannah. When young, these animals are exceedingly tender. We had meat for the pot for the entire dry season. This was one time when having smaller teats was an advantage.

The recent changes to the capital gains tax in Canada are being presented as targeting only the top 3% of income earners. This claim is based on the assumption that only those making over $250,000 in capital gains annually would be affected. While it's true that the wealthiest Canadians would bear the brunt of this tax, the reality is that many average Canadians could also be impacted, particularly during events like selling a rental property or settling an estate. Here’s how the new tax works: under the current system, 50% of a capital gain is taxed at your marginal rate. With the proposed changes, any capital gain exceeding $250,000 would have an additional 16% tax, effectively taxing 66% of the gain. For example, if you sell a property for a $500,000 capital gain, the first $250,000 would be taxed as usual, while the remaining $250,000 would face the higher rate. To illustrate, under the current tax system, a $500,000 capital gain would incur approximately $60,005 in taxes. With the new tax law, this amount increases to about $72,475. This higher tax burden would apply broadly, affecting not just the wealthy but also many middle-class Canadians, particularly those dealing with significant one-time gains like property sales from estates. If the goal is to target only the top earners, the government could implement a provision that requires individuals to make over $250,000 in capital gains in at least three years within a ten-year period. This would prevent occasional large gains from being heavily taxed and ensure the tax primarily impacts consistent high earners. However, the current approach suggests an intention to broaden the tax base. TLDR: In summary, the capital gains tax changes will affect a wide range of Canadians, not just the top 3%, especially during estate settlements involving property sales. The government could avoid taxing the middle class by adopting a more targeted approach, but the current proposal seems designed to increase tax revenue from a broader base. PS: Additionally, it's worth noting that taxes on alcohol have also increased, with beer taxes rising from around 40-50% to 50-60%. This means Canadians are now paying approximately $80 for a case of beer, with half of that cost being tax. In comparison, many other countries charge significantly less in taxes on alcohol.
