Could you do her next album, retired from sad new career in business? It'd really underapppreciated but I feel her lyrics are at her best in that album. She has matured to a different level of poetry that she hasn't achieved in her other projects. I feel it's similar to Lana del reys honeymoon in the sense that it's really good but extremely underappreciated due to the songs being understated and not "in your face" to focus more on the songwriting

(warning for discussion of rape) i'm sure many have said this already, but bag of bones is the first song mitski has ever written (at 17, no less!! just how) and i think that helps us understand the lyrical content better too-- particularly the line "i can take a little bit more/ let's shake this poet out of the beast". in an article that she wrote for the miscreant, she said "when i lost my virginity to rape by a drug dealer, i didn't become afraid-- i became his girlfriend. when i left school for a year after 10th grade and worked as a waitress, i lied about my age, stole groceries and clothes for that whole year, and overall broke many laws and got caught several times, but it never made me afraid. i am not glorifying any of this, in fact it's all very sad, because now that i am afraid of all of the above, i realize it's because i finally have things i care about, including myself, that i fear of hurting or losing". so yeah, i think ur interpretation of self-destruction as an intentional tool of/for creativity was right on point with that in mind. & i noticed a recurring theme of self-objectification throughout the album-- of both the sensual & existential kind. of course there's the more sexual types of self-objectification, especially with regards to male validation, in real men ("though honestly sir all i wanna do is get naked in front of you/ so you can look me up and down and tell me well done girl you're doing good"; "little boys hold me, color me, praise me"), but she also constantly compares her body to vortexes/ voids/ bags ("there is a door to me"; "i'm carrying my bag of bones"; "river rushing through my veins" and thus potentially "pearl diver, dive dive deeper" too) & gives herself-- especially her body-- slightly inhumane, definitely detached descriptions, & sometimes even treat it as a commodity ("biology, i am an organism, i'm chemical/ that's all, that is all"; "i'll sell, i'll sell my heart to you/ what's my, what's my, what's my price"), or something she does not own ("if i am not yours then what am i?"). i migggght be projecting a little bit, but as someone who experiences depersonalization, i kinda zeroed in on this constant introspection of the body as separate from the self. also!! there are so many parallels to be drawn between her discography but personally, the (probably intentional) comparison of door (from her debut) to everyone (from laurel hell, and according to some her last lp) drives me insane. especially "there is a door to me/ i've never seen it/ sometimes i get closer to it/ but i've never found it" + "i couldn't move underneath the dark but at least i finally found it/ it cried out a creak & opened to show me what's beyond it/ a hopeless violence: i named it love" versus "and i left the door open to the dark/ i said 'come in, come in, whatever you are'/ but it didn't want me yet".

(warning for overdose mention) I think for me Brand New City is my favorite. My interpretation of it is during the repetition of "Honey what'd you take?" she's talking to someone who has either taken a hard drug or is overdosing. I get the overdosing from when she says "Honey look at me tell me what you took, what'd you take?" because you are scared to lose this person so you have to keep them looking at you. I agree the highlight of the song is the bridge. "If I gave up on being pretty I wouldn't know how to be alive" To me, I take this on a really personal level so it might be biased. I feel as if she's saying without feeling pretty and/or being told she's pretty she feels like she's a no-one. For me, I take it on a level of my identity. Lots of people will ask why someone who wants to appear androgynous dresses so feminine. Yet sometimes you just feel so much prettier in feminine things and/or just feel more comfortable doing that. So it's like if you don't feel pretty it makes you begin to feel like you weren't ever there, to begin with. That's just my interpretation of it because I tend to search for things I relate to. I also love the line after, "I should move to a brand new city and teach myself how to die". I feel like if you've ever dealt with depression sometimes you can relate to that line. I know I could for sure. This is all just my view! I love hearing yours! I think you also might love Superache by Conan Gray! If it sounds like something you would do I would love to watch your review and thoughts on it :)

Lush is my favorite album by Mitski, mostly because this was her first album. She didn’t have expectations coming up to and nobody knew who she was really beforehand, this is just a raw emotion and feelings. This is her reaching out to the public so she can get a Fanbase. This is why I love lush, it’s the most underrated album she has put out and at the same time it is the most impactful and beautiful album she has ever written. Sounds like liquid smooth, brand-new city, and Eric just exude this idea of wanting and loneliness and feeling in touch with your body and how it affects you and other people. It’s just a beautiful album. As a longtime viewer I am so happy you finally reviewed this album. I would also recommend that you go into Hoziers album “hozier” That album it’s just pure poetry! Thank you for doing what you do ! You are one of my favorite KZread channels !!! 💜

i interpret real men as if she is talking about how men do all these things and get praised for it, get recognition and everyone cheers them, but then, a woman has to do the exact same things (thats why she says i am a real men) but nobody aknowledges their achivements, so women have to find the praise in other things, like appealing the male gaze or looking for male validation

My own personal interpretation of "Wife" is kind of the identity of women determined by their relationship to men. She wants to "bare a son", her home is the man etc. And it's called "Wife" just a role of women in society, not personal or even mentioned in the song. But that's just a quick explanation I have for it on the top of my head. Love the video tho as always 💕

Now you HAVE to do Retired from Sad, New Career in Business! It has a lot of similar imageries with a more constructed sound, and tons of metaphors to pick apart. She really excels in the storytelling in Retired from Sad, and it has a similar dark, brooding energy to Lush. It also just has some really banger songs, as well as possibly the saddest song ever (Class of 2013😭😭) I think you’d really enjoy this album as well :)

i think that in Real Men, mitski is saying as men pursue stereotypical traits of masculinity, they end up little boys. Conversely, as women are forced into social constructions of femininity they end up achieving ideal emotional manhood. “real men don’t eat cause they’re above that… i’m gonna be a real man” She finds herself not eating in order to conform to feminine beauty standards. thats what i got anyway

I think the part where she says "But your skin, did you notice your skin it cries a soft weep like mine" can be a reference to how her partner has been in her position before, it makes me think about how maybe this said person used Mitski as an outlet for their pent up emotions. Maybe Mitski and this person have been in similar situations before yet they express their trauma in completely different ways. Hence the similarities in their skin. This is just my take on it!

I might be way off, but I consider this album to be like a perspective of mitski's journey of self-love. I believe the love she's talking about in the song door is self-love. this album is heavily influenced with mitski's interactions with men, sexual experiences, and even human existence. But I believe those are usually the topics that people think about when trying to fall in love with them self either for the first time or trying to fall in love with themselves again. I think the themes of searching and self-destruction relates to her trying to find that self-love or even running away for it not wanting it. and with the history of this album and all the things she went through to write bag of bones (tw... rape), how she stayed with her assaulter (a horrible man) and lived a year of just breaking the laws it makes sense that at the end of it she starts to both question what self-love is and search for it again. and the fact this was school project is insane. this is not my favorite album of hers, but it is one of her albums that hits so deeply for me. I would also like to add I think in the song wife she says she cannot bear a son is relating to the theme of patriarchy (which is just so loud in this album) and it reminded me how in the old times they wanted the women to always bear a son never a daughter and that's kind of all that a women's life might. This might be a reach, but I believe that pearl diver is from the perspective of her personification of herself love kind of telling her what to do. to love yourself you must dive deep into yourself. The lines treasure hunter you are dead the light of the world is fading is kind of warning for mitski saying if she continues the way she has been acting towards herself she will in a way die and her world will die with her. or even you can take those lines like that she has given up loving herself (the treasure she searches for is self-love and she has kind of killed herself off so now her chance of living a good life is slipping through her fingertips.

i think Real Men is just a criticism on the patriarchy as a whole. as we all know, the patriarchy typically works against women but it also isn’t a cakewalk for men either. the line “real men don’t flinch or bleed in public” probably references the idea that to be a “real man” in the eyes of the patriarchy, one should refrain from showing emotion or being “feminine” in any way. in this way, mitski satirizes the patriarchy and the way it affects women but also the way it affects men by causing them to grow up to be emotionally immature with a superiority complex, which affects women. this is why as the song goes on, she goes from talking about “little boys” to “real men” because they’re growing up and fulfilling their patriarchal role of seeing women as sexual objects. just my take though, it could be something totally different ! :D

I love the way that she paints hegemonic masculinity as detrimental to everyone in real men. “Real men” aren’t allowed to express emotions, and have to “suck it in” and bottle everything up. Satirically, she claims they “don’t eat ‘cause they’re above that, damn it,” and I think the parallel between not eating and not expressing emotions (both harmful to your mental and physical health) essentially means that in order to be a real man by society’s standards, you have to become inhuman, above basic human needs. Whereas little boys, perhaps on their way to becoming real men but younger and haven’t (yet) lost their emotional capacity, and are able to tell Mitski whatever it is that she wants to hear, and “make [her] feel lovely for a little while.” This ties into a theme of the album which is how women are taught that their value is completely dependent upon their appearance, fertility, and ability to be a worthy side character in the life of a man. I think her vocal delivery in these lines where she is requesting validation from men communicates frustration from the battle between self-awareness that it’s silly to need men to make you feel like you’ve been living correctly and still seeking it out anyway. It’s like she is just sick of it and she is completely over “real men” who think that they are doing her a favor by complimenting her body and physical appearance, whereas “little boys” are who she is seeking validation from because their love maybe feels more genuine but she is just incredibly angry that she is dependent on their validation despite knowing better.
