interesting! i definitely saw me and my husband on a different light - my interpretation was more like she was lying and trying to convince herself that her and her husband are doing better when in reality they're not... my image is more of like a housewife that stays with her husband cause it's all she knows and she's not happy but they're sticking together cause that's just all she has. As always i love your reactions!

yeah, and how it’s almost like she needs her husbands approval to have an opinion or speak her mind. that’s what i got from the line “i’m in the corner taking up space but when he walks in i am loved”. it’s as if she has no purpose and no one cares about her unless her husband is with her

Your right but me and my husband isn’t about her actual husband it’s a metaphor what it’s a metaphor for it could be several things maybe it’s her career cause she does it a lot where she will write a song where it seems like it’s about a romantic relationship but she’s actual singing about music or her career it could be that but it’s not her actual husband

Ok so I've just finished the part about Me and My Husband, and I want to talk about my interpretation. I feel like the song is about a toxic relationship. Throughout the song, Mitski talks about how she feels worthless, but she feels loved and valuable when her husband's there. It's like she thinks she doesn't have a purpose outside of him, which is kinda harmful. Also, she repeats how she and her husband are doing better, as if she is trying to convince herself. She also says that they've always been together, so that's all she knows. She thinks being in that type of relationship where you feel worthless outside of your partner's validation is normal. And the "furrowed brow" part, I think, shows that the relationship isn't good. Maybe he doesn't treat her well, but she feels she should ignore that because he is the only thing giving her validation, so she can't give him up, and like she said, it's all she's known. And I think the opening lines are kind of depressing. They're not like "You only live once, so make it the best life you can!", they're more like "I am worthless and only here as a waste of oxygen". I *steal* a few breaths from the world for a minute, and then I'll be *nothing forever.* I think the choice of the word "steal" was intentional.

yes! i also think the line "at least in this life time we're sticking together" means that at least in this life time she has to go through this toxicity and once it's over it's over. As if she's trying to hold on till the end cause she knows she can't let go, but once her time is over she won't have to deal with the burden in her other lives if she's lucky enough.

Since you didn‘t know what she meant with “Do mi ti“ in Washing Machine Heart: She‘s singing the solfège syllables (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti). The notes she‘s singing are Do mi ti. This portrays (imo) that her partner is hearing her but does not react/shows not attention to her, which is why “why not me“ follows after that.

WRONG! Do mi ti actually means, "bye to you", "i love you", "do me that", "give me you", "to me you", "The m t", "until we you", "we do", "that's why", "do me ti", "so me you", "I do", "do mi tu", "you mi ti", "of me you", "Dr. Mi T", "my back is small" "do me", "do me tea", "Do Mi Thai", "do you", "said to me", "for me you", "Dr. M.T", "do me ti", "I give you", "what do you do?", "because of me", "yes me you", "by me", "Two miti", "I don't care", "do I have" "Do me t", "Do Me The", "do me from", "do my you", "into me you". And they all totally make perfect sense with the song.

I always interpreted the "i feel in love with a war, nobody told me it ended" as saying that she was so used to trauma, that she didn't knew it could end, and because it was the only thing she knew she "feel in love" with it, and she didn't now she could get out of it, so now she had those thoughts and these memories in her head that keep her awake remembering them

She only have 5 albums, so you’re almost done lol. The two albums left are Lush and Retired From Sadness, New Career in Business. The one you listen to next is completely up to you, they’re both amazing. Lush is her first album and is a lot more personal and captures some pretty dark stuff. Rfsncb is more modern and a has a lighter sound on average, but they both are pretty heavy. I love all your Mitski reactions so I can’t wait to see more!!

for me, a horse named cold air always reminds me of boxer from animal farm; 'cold air' no longer lives up to their former self and present expectations. I think the horse being named 'cold air' could be referencing its speed from its glory days. a horse that ran so fast it created cold air, and now that it has grown older it no longer suits its name. to me this is the parallel between the horse and the lake, it no longer fits the preconceptions of a lake: one filled with fish, vigor and life

i like be the cowboy because with other mitski albums, you can tell they're from the same era of her music. they have similar themes and sounds, and you can connect them to each other. with be the cowboy though, she'd been writing some of the song for years. they're different and unrelated to each other, she didn't write them at the same time in her life, she just finished them at the same time. for an example, geyser! she simply didn't know how to end the song, she was writing it for years before she found an end to it. she even said that some of her old classmates might remember it because she started writing all that time ago.

I know almost for a fact that she didn't write it the way I interpret it but as a trans lesbian I always related to Come Into The Water. The fact that I like women always made me feel weird and I couldn't even tell if I was ace or not because I stuffed down any sexual thoughts for years because they felt gross because I viewed myself as a man whenever I thought about sex (i.e. "Maybe I'm the same as All Those Men"). and I just really like the sapphic vibe that that song has :>

I have a similar interpretation of it ! I’m not a lesbian, but I do like women (I’m afab but nonbinary), and I’ve always felt uncomfortable because I was afraid that I’d be like “all those men”. I’ve been scared to even say a women was beautiful out loud in fear that someone would think I was being creepy. Growing up and being in locker rooms during middle school was a very scary experience for me because I would try not to look at anyone at all. I knew I wasn’t looking on purpose, but what if someone thought I was? I would spend my whole time focusing all my attention on staring at floors and walls that I wouldn’t even have enough time to change. I’m glad someone else sees it in a similar way ! Thank you for sharing your interpretation. ❤️

You also have a beautiful way of describing things, i really enjoy your videos, i can´t wait to see what is to come!!! PS: if i can make a suggestion, i would love love love to see you react to Clairo's most recent album, "Sling". I am not a native english speaker, so i find it hard to interpret what she means in the songs, even when understaing what every word means, it appears to me that the hole phrases are deeper than that. I have even seen some native english speakers struggle with it, so... i think that it would be amazing to hear your thoughts on it!!!!

my favorite song interpretations are Washing machine heart: being used by someone nobody: pure loneliness from when she was in Malaysia, where she stayed for a long time because of her father's work, she came back to Malaysia for a show and it was the holidays so she decided to stay there for a bit and she didn't expect it to be so lonely and she had an extreme meltdown which lead to the song Two Slow Dancers: human mortality. Or the last of a school alumni where everyone is gone and in the afterlife and they are the only ones left and death is waiting for them to finish their last dance also my interpretation of the album title To me "Be the Cowboy" means the lone and douchebag cowboy who destroys everything, including themselves, she used the cowboy metaphor as being lonely and messing up her life, which she maybe did when she announced the hiatus which led to "Laurel Hell"

I interpret the pearl in her lyrics of "a pearl" could mean the aftermath of the war is the pearl. And like after any trauma or anything that has happened it leaves a indent on you forever. The pearl can sorta be a metaphor for that as well as the war concept. It's hard the things that we go through but she might feel comfort in it after a long time of suffering.

Two slow dancers is so sad, it feels like two gay guys found the first love in their life and slow danced in high school. This song is like a photo of that memory but you know the spark is long gone and when you reconnect 60 years it’s just not the same and life is going to be over soon. Such a beautiful existential crisis song

the part in a pearl when she says it rolls around every night means that every night her head goes into this place where theres a ball of her trauma (the pearl) and she goes there every night which means she just thinks about her trauma leading to the insomnia (this is what i think of it as)

In the song a pearl, the pearl is actually can be about the song pearl diver. The pearl diver is looking for the beautiful and when they found it, the struggle finally ends in the a pearl song. The diver lefts a pearl in her hand and leaves the beautiful in her hand. Idk it's just an idea :)

Also the song wife and me and my husband are related by the starts of their music. Mitski breathes and leaves their breathe at the start of the songs like they're related.

You should react to a Vienna Teng album sometime - I've seen that you like Imogen Heap and she can have a similar vibe at times (specifically the 2013 song Hymn of Axciom), also similar to Tori Amos. She's not very well known but her lyricism astounds me sometimes! My favorite albums of her's are Dreaming Through the Noise (2006) and Inland Territory (2009) where she starts to eschew her more traditional sound for some really interesting stuff. Her latest album is Aims (2013) and she has taken a hiatus on her music career to work on fighting climate change.

I took it to mean that her previous bad relationship left her with pain and potentially ptsd so even though she’s in a healthier relationship there’s a permanent pearl of fear left over which is effecting her ability to connect.
