Poet, Lover, Birdwatcher is a 1965 poem by Nissim Ezekiel. In this poem, the speaker says that the poet, the lover and the birdwatcher, all three must show patience and perseverance to succeed in their journey.
This poem is classified as an ars poetica, because it is essentially about writing poems. Nissim, infact wants a poet to learn observation from a birdwatcher, who 'but patient love relaxing on a hill To note the movement of a timid wing' and also learn patience from a lover, who waits till the woman surrenders herself. By the end of the poem, all three people fuse together as a single persona. To summarise, a poet must travel to the unknown lanes of his psyche to receive poetic inspiration and create a meaningful work of art.
